THE University of San Carlos nabbed third place in its first international stint in the 18-Under division of the 2nd Singa Cup last Thursday in Singapore.
The team finished with three wins and two losses to place third in the league-type competition.
USC started strong in the tournament after blanking Singapore’s Real Diablos Rojos, 2-0, but lost to German European School (GES), 5-0.
“The team was shocked by the tall opposition. The strikers used the long ball and capitalized on our mistakes,” said Junjun Decena, father of Ethan Decena, a member of the team.
The team bounced back in the second day after winning against West Australia, 1-0, and Bombay Gymkhana Colts, where they showed better ball movement and created more scoring opportunities.
However, USC lost to Youth Football Home from Thailand (YFH), 1-0.
The undefeated YFH was crowned champion with 15 points followed by German European School from Singapore with nine points.
Although USC was tied with GES with nine points, the latter got second place on goal difference.
Aside from Decena, the other members of the team were Gabriel De Leon, Pomeroy Luke Veloso, Orson Tan, Allain Jon Carlo Abella, Chinno Dela Calzada, Willfred Villaver, Jose Francisco Domenico Alicaya, Renko Gaudiel, Januarius Paglinawan, John Daniel Caballero and Vinson Joseph Nery.

DeleteYou don't need 6'9" players in Football, unlike in Basketball. 6'3" sa Football, matangkad na. In fact, kokonti lang ang mga players above 6'4" in Football ...
DeleteThat's what I'm talking about, the bus is rollin' and our footballers are ridin' along.
ReplyDeleteNews like this are nice to hear and much appreciated.
Well, saan ka naman makakakita ng 6 footer na local Filipino? ha ha ha. Height is advantage pa din lalo na pag same skill level.
DeleteI have been the following the beautiful game ever since you were born. Ikaw halata naman na newbie ka . What a waste of time lol
ReplyDeleteFrom the word 'shocked' meaning the first time they saw the german teams ,USC put themselves in a negative mentality and its the coach motivation that could alter the fear of his team if he really did his best and its not totally the height that matters. USC U18 team should have played the men's open in their preparation so their players won't budge when faced with tall opponents. Kulang sa preparation ang team na ito..
ReplyDeleteklaro u are the same crab that keeps commenting and criticizing around here. im from cebu. wag kang magmarunong sa team na ito kay a week before nito sila ang naglaro laban ng USJR sa CESAFI Finals. Last years champion din itong team nato sa CESAFI at national champions ng PRISAA LAST YEAR. kung magusap akalang sinong magaling
