Aboitiz Football Cup kicks off 15th season with PH Azkals on Nov. 11

Local football fans can look forward to a better and more exciting Aboitiz Football Cup (AFC) as it kicks off its 15th season on Nov. 11 at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City from 1 p.m. onwards.


Top executives of the Aboitiz Group companies will lead the opening. Joining them are members of the country’s national football team, the Philippine Azkals.


Those who will attend the grand launch on Sunday can expect a festive ambiance, a new twist introduced by the organizers to add more fun to the event. There will be parlor games and contests like juggling, longest boot, slalom race, X-mark the Spot (accuracy contest), longest throw-in/target, longest goal and head to head volleyball, all designed to test the skills of the participants. Winners of these games will win tickets to the international friendly match of Azkals versus Singapore Lions on Nov. 15 at the Cebu City Sports Center.


Prior to the kickoff, Aboitiz Foundation and the Cebu Football Association will sign a memorandum of agreement on Nov. 7 at the Persimmon to seal their partnership in staging the 15th Aboitiz Football Cup, the premier football competition and longest-running tournament in Cebu.


Aboitiz Foundation has increased its the funding for the six-month tournament from P1.1 million last year to P1.3 million. The Cup is part of the Foundation’s corporate social responsibility program to develop well-rounded individuals and share the spirit of sportsmanship that will translate into passion in everything they do. It is also part of the Aboitiz Group’s commitment to support the development of football in Cebu.


During the games, more than 4,000 players from participating schools and football clubs will compete under a league-type format in different age brackets both in men’s and women’s categories. Titles at stake are Players 6, Players 8, Players 10, Boys 12, Girls 12, Boys 14, Girls 14, Boys 17, Girls 17, Boys 19, Boys 23, Ladies open, men’s open and 38-up.
