MANILA, Philippines – A three-team tournament dubbed the “I Can Serve Invitational” from September 17 to 24 pitting the Philippine Azkals and two of the country’s leading football clubs – Global FC and Kaya FC – is in the works.
More than the competition, which will also serve as a build-up for the Azkals in preparation for the Long Teng Cup, the tournament hopes to drum up support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Organizers are eyeing the Rizal Memorial Stadium as venue for the event although the schedule of the matches is still being finalized pending negotiations with TV networks ABS-CBN and TV5.
Kaya, one of the top-flight teams in the United Football League, boasts of national players Aly Borromeo, Jason Sabio, Anton del Rosario, Nate Burkey and Yannick Tuason. The five players will play for Kaya when they face the Azkals.
Global FC, the reigning UFL Cup and National Club champion, has Misagh Bahadoran and Angel Aldeguer in its lineup and they are also expected for their club against the Azkals.
Organizers see the Kaya-Global showdown as a start of a long rivalry between the two clubs.
Kaya has linked up with the I Can Serve Foundation as part of its efforts to promote Breast Cancer Awareness.
In fact, Kaya will be wearing a limited edition kit adorned with a pink ribbon for October. The kits will be sold at Mizuno branches with proceeds going to the foundation.
