O PAVE the way for better weather conditions and lure more participants from outside Baguio, the Baguio Charter Day Football Tournament was moved to a later date also this month.
Organizers in their Facebook page said the charter day football cup was moved to September 24 and 25, age groups on the 24th and men’s and ladies’ divisions on the 25th.
With its postponement, the tournament will now be a two-day seven-a-side football tournament featuring six age groups and the men’s and ladies’ open at the Melvin Jones Football Grounds.
Seeing action in the age group divisions are the 10 under, 12 under, 14 under, 16 under, 19 under and the 23 under in the tournament staged through the initiative of Councilor Elmer Datuin, in cooperation with the Baguio United Football Club, Inc. and the City Sports Office.
Registration fee is P500 for the men’s and ladies’ open, while the age group divisions will be at P200.
Aside from the tournament, a football festival and training for 6 and 8 under will also commence on the same day for the grassroots development program being pushed by Fifa, which is not tournament-oriented but development-oriented.
Under the new approach, systems will be implemented where kids will register and will be assigned to teams. Afterwards, they will be ushered to different stations in the training system where they will be coached and mentored on every aspect of their game and skills.
This grassroots program under Fifa is also aimed to develop the interest of the children in playing football and to strengthen the base of the grassroots, particularly in football.
There will also be a Baguio's very own "Derby", much like the Manchester United and Manchester City derby, between the Baguio Football Club and the Baguio United Football Club, Inc. on September 10, 9 a.m. at Melvin Jones Football Grounds.
Interested teams or players may send e-mail to baguiounited @gmail.com for invitation, questions and entries. (Roderick Osis)
