La Salle retains Ceres Cup titles

The winning streak continues for Ceres- La Salle football team as the squad beat Central Philippine University in Men's 22 and turned back the Rising Sun- Cebu in Men's Open to register back-to-back victories in the 2 nd Ceres Cup at the North Football Field in Talisay City over the weekend.

The La Sallians led the list of winners in the two-day 7-a-side football festival that drew a record of 406 participating teams from different areas of the country.

It was the same La Salle football team that scored a three-peat in the national PRISAA games in Iloilo last month and had successfully defended their crown in the University Games last year, their veteran and multi-titled coach Freddie “Nene” Lazarito said.

La Salle's Hanesin Prince Antony, who was named Most Valuable Player in Men's Open last year, bagged his second individual award from the tournament this year with his impressive performance for the La Salle team in Men's 22.

While this year's Ceres Cup proved to be a little difficult as foreign players beefed up the lineup of the other clubs, Lazarito said playing together for more than a year now worked to their advantage.

“We had a great team work and we've been practicing everyday. Our players are both mentally and physically prepared for the tournament,” Lazarito said.

He also attributed their series of victories to the all-out support of their benefactor, the Yanson family, who were there to provide for the needs of the players.

Sharing the limelight with the La Salle squad are the lady booters from Negros Occidental Fotoball Association, who beat Minuluan, 1-0, in Ladies' Open final match.

Similarly triumphant were the young footballers from Atletico de Bago, who beat Sportivo FC – Alabang in Boys' 18 championship, while Don Bosco - Cebu captured the title in Boys' 16 category yesterday by prevailing over San Carlos FC.

The loss in Boys' 16 did not dampen the spirit of the San Carlos FC, whose Ladies 19 team reigned against Tamasak FC from Barotac in the final, while their Girls' 13 squad edged Rizal Football Club to grab the title, and the Boys' 11 team taming Don Bosco Cebu for the top prize in Boys' 11.

The final match in Men's 38 saw veteran-laden Ceres FC team beating their counterparts from San Carlos FC with former national team campaigner Jesurel Tonog receving the MVP honors.

Ilaga FC took the title in Boys' 14 after beating Ateneo Cebu, while the Blue Brothers from Manila dominated the competition in Mix 9 category.

Earlier, Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. along with Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella and Talisay City Mayor Eric Saratan led the ceremonial kick along with Vice Governor Eugenio Lacson and tournament chairman Nicolas Golez during the opening ceremony.*NAB

All systems go for 2nd Ceres Cup

Football athletes from different teams and clubs have started to arrive in Bacolod City yesterday for the biggest summer football festival in the country, the 2 nd Ceres Cup, this weekend.

Matches will be played in 14 categories – mixed boys and girls aged 9, mixed boys and girls 10. boys' 11. Boys 12, boys' 14, boys' 16, girls' 13, girls' 15, ladies' 19, boys' 18, men 22, ladies' open, men 38 and men's open.

The matches being held in coordination with the Negros Occidental Football Association, under the leadership of Ricky Yanson Jr. and the United Football Alliance, Inc., will be played in 24 football pitches in four ballfields at Ceres FC North Field across Ayala District, Carlos Hilado Memorial State College and Talisay City football fields, and the Ceres FC Mandalagan Football Field located behind Convergys.

Competitions director Warren Concepcion said licensed referees from Iloilo, Dumaguete, San Carlos, and NOFA were tapped to officiate in the two-day bootfest.

Organizing committee chairman Nicolas Golez said they are working hard to ensure that the visitors will be happy while spending their time in the province as it will reflect on the province's image as host of the country's biggest football festival.

He added that Ceres – La Salle FC team owner Leo Rey Yanson, had made it all possible for the second edition of the Ceres Cup after its resounding success last year.

From last year's 306 participating teams, Golez said this year's event has at least 380 confirmed teams. Winners in all categories will receive cash prizes and trophies.

Scheduled to play this Saturday are the teams in Mix 9, Boys' 11, Boys' 14, Girls' 13, Ladies'1 19, Men's 22 and Men's 38-Up. To play on Sunday are the teams listed under the Mix 10, Boys' 12, Boys'16, Girls' 15, Boys' 18, Ladies Open, and Men's Open.*NAB

2nd Ceres Cup to draw thousands in Negros

Thousands of football followers are expected to converge in the province this weekend for the 2 nd Ceres Cup that will be held simultaneously in four venues in Bacolod and Talisay cities.

With 380 teams confirmed to participate in the 14 categories of the 7-aside football tournament, Negros Occ. Gov. Alfredo Marañon said the event will a boon to tourism and the local economy.

In a press conference yesterday, Ceres FC administrator Nicolas Golez said that the second edition of the Ceres Cup is bigger than last year's and the organizers would like everyone to have a good time as this will reflect on how the province play host to a national football event.

“We would like everyone to be happy and comfortable here in our province and with the help of our local officials we will make it possible,” Golez said.

He added that Ceres FC takes pride in hosting the country's biggest football festival to highlight the club's concern for football development, particularly for the kids, and not just in winning championships in the United Football League.

Competition director Warren Concepcio said participating teams from the different provinces in the country are expected to arrive tomorrow and start settling in their billeting areas.

To assist the teams in their lodgings and accommodations, Concepcion said three public schools in Talisay City agreed to open their facility for those who want to stay there.

Buses will also be provided for the teams to and from their assigned venue -- the Ceres FC North Field across Ayala District, Carlos Hilado Memorial State College and Talisay City football and the Ceres FC Mandalagan Football Field located behind Convergys.

The 2 nd Ceres Cup also offers the lowest registration fee in the country of P800 per team and winners will receive cash prizes and trophies, Concepcion said.

Of the 380 teams that confirmed their entries, 27 teams will see action in the Mix 9 category; 35 for Boys' 11 event; 50 in the Boys' 14; 9 in Girls' 13; 22 for Ladies' 19; 12 teams for Men's 22; 10 squads for Men's 38-Up; 29 teams for Mix 10; 49 teams for Boys' 12; 53 teams in Boys' 16; 10 teams for Girls' 15; 15 teams for Boys' 18; 25 for Ladies Open; and 39 teams in Men's Open.

Opening program of the event will at 7:20 a.m. at the Ceres FC North Football Field in Talisay City, with Gov. Marañon, Vice Gov. Eugenio Lacson, Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella, and Talisay Mayor Eric Saratan expected to give their messages to the participants.

More than 300 teams are expected to converge in the cities of Bacolod and Talisay when the 2^nd Ceres Cup kicks off on May 16-17, 2015 at the Ceres FC North Field (across Ayala District), Carlos Hilado Memorial State College and Talisay City football fields, and Ceres FC Mandalagan Football Field (at the back of Convergys)in Bacolod City.
This, after the successful staging of its inaugural tournament last year,drawing in 306 teams and thousands of football enthusiasts across the country.
A7-a-side format will be applied in all categories wherein each team is assured to play not lessthanfourmatches every match date.Each team is allowed to have a maximum of14players and twoofficials.
Among the categories to be competed on May 16 are: boys/girls or mixed 9 (2006 and after), boys 11(2004 and after), boys 14 (2001 and after), girls 13 (2002 and after), Ladies 19 (1996 and after), Men 22 (1993 and after), and Men 38 (1977 and before).

Yanson is new NOFA prexy

Long-time Negros football patron Ricky Yanson of Dynamic FC and Dynamic Football League (DFL) is the newly-elected president of the Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA).
This was confirmed yesterday by NOFA General-Secretary Paulline Javelona following the association’s recent meeting.
Yanson has been the frontrunner of the successful staging of the age-group DFL, which has provided avenue for young aspiring football players from the grassroots.
Joining Yanson are San Carlos City Mayor Gerardo Valmayor Jr. as Vice President, and Board of Directors Junie Lizares (Minuluan FC), Raymando Baldava (Don Bosco FC), Mariano Antonio Cui III (San Carlos FC), Jose Ma. Sanson (Bago City FC), Augustine Rey Rivas (Kabankalan FC), Gerald Pornan (Ma-ao FC), and former president Charlie Cojuangco as honorary board member.
Javelona said the new set of officers will formally take office next month, with the general assembly scheduled January 30.
Meanwhile, the San Carlos City FC closed the year 2014 with a huge success after registering three titles in secondary girls’ futsal, secondary boys’ football, and tertiary men.
The secondary girls recently booked victory over the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos during the Palarong Panlalawigan while the boys defeated La Castellana (Area V), 4-nil.
Meanwhile, the San Carlos collegiate team outplayed the West Visayas State College of Technology in the just-concluded Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association meet played at the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College in Talisay City.
According to John Carmona, club’s technical director, more programs will be implemented next year particularly among the players and coaches to further strengthen the sports in San Carlos City./

Negrense lady booters finish 1st runner-up in 19th Alaska Cup

The Negros Occidental Minulu-an FC Lady Booters placed 1^st runner-up in the recently-concluded 19^th Alaska Football Cup played at the Alabang Country Club.
The Negrenses, who were among the 21 teams from all over the country participating in the Under 18 Ladies category, bowed to Ateneo de Davao FC, 2-nil, in the finals.
It was also the same side which the Negrense Lady Booters lost to during the elimination, 3-2.
En route the finals, the Minulu-an FC bounced back from a loss to Ateneo de Davao with a hard earned victory over De La Salle Zobel, 3-nil, followed by a devastating 19-0 win over Friendship Paiyabe and a 4-1 triumph against Hed Center.
In the quarter finals, the Negrense side ruled over Sakya Davao FC, 4-1, while survived Ateneo de Cebu FC in the semifinals, 3-2.
The Minulu-an FC was bracketed in Group A with Ateneo de Davao FC, De La Salle Zobel, Hed Center Manila FC, and Friendship Paiyabe Manila FC.
The Negrense side was composed of skipper Noelle Mikaela de Asis, Charisa Marie Lemoran, Janna Ysabelle Lagman, Monica Therese Lizares, Anna Mikaila Escario, Christine Michelle Miranda, Francisca Anne Marie Surete, Bea Marie Gavile, Mauriccia Limco, Mariessa Lusabia, Mickaella Marie Descalzo and keeper Natasha Katerina Lacson.

Hundreds of teams from various football clubs across the country are expected to converge in the cities of Bacolod and Talisay, Negros Occidental when the 1^st Ceres Cup 7-A-Side football tournament is scheduled to kick off on May 17-18.

Fourteen categories will be contested in this two-day bootfest, which include: Under-8, Under-9 and Under-10, which are all open to boys, girls or mixed teams, Under-11, Under-12 and Under-13 – all in the boy’s category; Under-14 Girls, Under-15 Boys, Under-18 Boys and Under-18 Girls, Under-20 Boys as well as Men’s Open, Ladies’ Open and 38-Above.

In line with this, formal letter of invitations, registration forms and other tournament details will be sent out today.

Interested teams may contact the Competition Committee through Tel. No. 0916-687-3460.

Registration fee is pegged at P1,000 for the 38-Above and Men’s Open groups, while P800 per team for the age-groups.

Ceres FC taps Fil-foreign recruits

The preparations of the Ceres Football Club for the 2014 AFC President's Cup on May 1 to 11 include bringing into the team players who can beef up key positions, head coach Ali Bernard Rojas said yesterday.

At the signing ceremony for Filipino-German football player Patrick Reichelt, a mainstay of the national senior team, Azkals, Rojas said they are also targeting the No. 1 spot in the United Football League second division, another reason why they are fortifying their lineup with foreign and Fil-foreign players.

But this does not mean that homegrown talents will be overlooked as Rojas assured that the present core of the team, with several top-notch local players, is already good.

“If you want a strong team, you need to have substitutes who can play like the first eleven. But more than the skills, we want professionalism,” Roxas said, stressing that having the right attitude will assure a player of a long stay with Ceres.

He added that “Ceres is different from other clubs. Our players know that there is no superstar in the team. Everyone is treated the same.”

He said they are preparing the team for the future and they want to make sure that they field a team that can reach the finals and win the championship.

Putting together a formidable Ceres FC does not also mean disregarding the commitment to support the Ceres – La Salle collegiate squad, team manager and Leo Rey Yanson said.

He said the Ceres – La Salle team that will represent the region in the national PRISAA in Davao this April, has its own coaching staff and players and receives the full support of the management.

After several years of investing his time and resources into football development in Negros Occidental, Yanson said he is happy to see Ceres FC achieving a lot in the span of three years.

“Everybody’s dream is to be the best in the country and in Asia. We may have achieved a lot but we will not stop,” Yanson said, referring to the back-to-back title of Ceres FC in the PFF-Smart National Club Championship that gave the team the ticket to represent the country in the AFC President’s Cup

After signing up Reichelt, Yanson said they are expecting five to six more players from either Spain or Germany to join the team in the coming weeks.

He added that football is his passion and his commitment to support the sport in Negros will always remain.*NAB

Azkals’ Patrick Reichelt enlists with Ceres-La Salle

Philippine-Azkals’ midfielder Fil-German Patrick Reichelt recently signed up with Bacolod City-based club Ceres-La Salle FC.
This was confirmed yesterday by team head coach Ali Bernard Go, who said that acquiring the services of the national team veteran is part of the club’s plan in beefing up for the upcoming President’s Cup.
The 25-year-old Reichelt, who saw action for 2nd tier Singhtarua FC in Thailand, has also played for Global FC in the UFL as well as several German clubs.
Reichelt will also be a huge addition to the firepower of the reigning PFF-Smart Club national champion, which is currently tied at No. 2 with Philippine Airforce in UFL’s 2nd tier.
On Friday, Ceres-La Salle FC blanked the All-Japan FC, 2-nil.
After a scoreless first half, the Bacolod club came out with a strong second half offensive with J Baguioro finding the back of the net in the 69th minute, and Korean Jin Ho Kim sealed the victory in the 75th minute.
With the win, Ceres-La Salle FC has now three wins, a loss, and a draw in five games.
“We still have 17 games left with Agila FC as our next assignment. The Top two teams in the 2nd tier will go up to the league’s Division 1,” Go said.

NOFA Club Provincial C’ships tentative kickoff set in April

Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA) will be staging the 2014 NOFA Club Provincial Championships tentatively this April, as a qualifying tournament for the upcoming 4th Philippine Football Federation-Smart Club National Championships.
This was revealed by NOFA General-Secretary Paulline Javelona on Sunday in an interview over “Aksyon Isports” of dyEZ Aksyon Radyo-Bacolod.
She said this provincial tournament will determine which team will be representing the football association in the upcoming national championships.
“However, I have some difficulty right now with the April schedule because of some conflict of schedules. This is because one of the teams which committed to participate in this provincial qualifying, the Ceres-La Salle FC, is likewise playing in the UFL and will also be representing the President’s Cup on the same month,” Javelona explained.
“As a NOFA representative, we would also like to field the strongest team to represent the province in the national finals. And Ceres-La Salle is the two-time defending champion of this tournament,” she added.
On the other hand, the NOFA official also said that aside from the senior’s division, Negros Occidental is also the reigning back-to-back PFF-Suzuki U23 National Cup champion.
The tournament would have served as the qualifying for which team will represent the country in the Southeast Asian Games. However, the FA official noted that though the provincial squad had won the national tournament twice, they were also denied twice to represent the country.
“We have proven many times that the Negros Occidental team is the best in the country, but for unknown reasons the federation’s committee have yet to notice it,” Javelona said. “It’s quite unfair because our local clubs have been working so hard in order to come up with the best team. They spend much to form a highly-competitive football team. We hope that the efforts by these clubs in the province will be seen by the people in the federation,” she added./

204 teams confirmed in 1st Ceres FC bootfest

A total of 204 teams from different football clubs in the country will converge in Bacolod City for the staging of the inaugural 1^st Ceres FC Friendship 7-A-Side Football Festival on February 1, 2014.

This was disclosed yesterday by Match Commissioner Warren Concepcion, who revealed that more than 2,000 footballers and hundreds of parents are expected to join and witness, respectively, the one-day football festivity.

Playing venues for this event are the Ceres FC North Football Field, Ceres FC Football Field-Mandalagan and St. John’s Institute Explorer School Football Field.

Tournament Vice Chairman Nicolas Golez said the festival is a vision of Ceres FC Manager Leo Rey Yanson, which is aimed at providing football enthusiasts the opportunity to foster and exhibit sportsmanship in a competitive, safe, and friendly environment. It seeks to encourage and promote football development in Negros Occidental, Golez added.

The assembly will be a common ground for gathering all passionate football players, for them to gain knowledge and respect for each other by setting aside prejudice towards differences and replace it with by friendship and camaraderie, organizers said.

The festival, organized in coordination with the Negros Occidental Football Association and the Philippine Football Federation, will feature 10 age-groups – boys/girls or mixed, born 2006 and after; boys/girls or mixed, born 2004 and after; boys born 2002 and after; boys born 2000 and after; boys born 1998 and after; boys born 1996 and after; girls born 2000 and after; men born 1976 and before; ladies open; and men’s open.

Led by Yanson as overall chairman, the organizing committee of the festival is composed of Golez as vice chairman; Warren Concepcion, competitions director and match commissioner; Augustine Rivas, head of officials; Dennis Estaniel, referees assessor; and Norman Fegidero, head of the control and disciplinary committee./

Archers repeat over Ceres

Visiting De La Salle’s Green Archers United repeated its victory last year
 against  Bacolod-based Ceres-La Salle FC in a charity match dubbed
 “One Kick for a Thousand Lives” held at Panaadpitch Saturday.

The Chieffy Caligdong-led visitors dominated the entire match forcing Ceres FC
 Korean keeper Jae Hun Hyoun busy the entire evening guarding the posts.

Twelve minutes after kick-off, Archer Junsoo Park found the back of the net for an 
early 1-nil advantage against the home team.

Ceres made an explosive attack but the Archers’ defense stood firm not 
giving anyroom for a decent shot. Azkals’ promising custodian, Patrick Deyto,
 likewise shown high level of performance in keeping Ceres’ attacks off target. 
The visitors led the
 break, 1-nil.

The Archers remained in attacking mode to score their second in the 48th minute 
courtesy of Jesse Martindale in front of Hyoun.

Star forward Jayson Panhay, who scored the lone goal in their last encounter, 
was not effective this time, failing to shine at home.

Ceres’ mentor Ali Go said the loss is still a good experience against one of the
 top clubs from Manila.

“The loss is really an awakening for us. And this makes us a better team. 
Ceres had been winning tournaments, and that sometimes you also need 
to lose to be better. You have to take it as a good experience and learn from 
your mistakes,”he said.

Lead organizer Rose Ann Valmayor said the charity match was able to raise
 P150,000 for the Yolanda victims in northern Negros and the Queen of Peace
 School in San Carlos City.

Valmayor, daughter of San Carlos City Mayor Gerardo Valmayor, said though
 only a few watched the game, the tickets for the bleachers were sold out.

“We are looking forward to initiate more events so we can raise more
 funds for Yolanda victims,” she added.(HGD)

NO NEED to prove who is the better team. This match is for a common 
cause and not arematch. But watch out, the Green booters will not just play 
an exhibition game. 
This is for real.

Relegating ‘pride’ on the sideline and forgetting for a while the result of the 
recent UnitedFootball League Cup in Manila, the Bacolod City-based Ceres –
 La Salle FC and the De La Salle Green Archers United will return at the pitch 
on January 18 at the 
Panaad Park and Stadium.

“One Kick for a Thousand Lives” will feature the 2013 PFF-Smart Club
 Championshipsdefending champion Ceres – La Salle FC against 
Chiefy Caligdong – led Archers in a game for cause which will benefit the 
Yolanda victims in Northern Negros 
and the Queen of Peace School in San Carlos City.

With Caligdong are Arnie Panisabo, Arvin Soliman, Ronnie Aguisanda,
 Tommy Escoltero, Patrick Bocobo, Reynald Villareal, Floriano Pasilan Jr., 
Jesus Melliza, Ivan Fraire, Patrick Deyto, Shag Shapay Johnson, 
Robert Lopez-Mendy, Gabriel Olowoyee, Raymark Fernandez, Sean Lee,
 Lawrence Obinna, Jesse Martindale, Diego Garcia, Jovanie Simpron, 
and Gregg Yang.

It can be recalled that Ceres–La Salle FC bowed out of the UFL Cup 
after a heartbreaking loss to the Green Archers United, 2-1,
 in the quarterfinal match.

Ceres was impressive at the start of that match as midfielder Jayson Panhay 
scored on a free kick in the 28th minute which Azkals’ Chieffy equalized
 five minutes later for a 1-all score at the break.

Both sides struggled in the final half as defense tightened and passing
 lanes denied. Caligdong, however, didn’t lose his bag of tricks and
 confusedhis defender to blast the winning goal in the 90+2’ of the match.

The Green Archers earned the ticket to the semifinals and Ceres went home
 disappointed.

Dynamic Football League U13, U16 tournament opens Jan. 11 at Panaad

Defending champion University of St. La Salle-Integrated School heads the list of the 12 teams in the U13 category, while six teams are vying for the title in the U16 group as the Dynamic Football League 2014 opens this Saturday at the Panaad Park and Stadium pitch in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

To challenge the USLS-IS squad in the U13 division are Andres Bonifacio Elementary School, Apolinario Mabini ES, Bata ES, Don Bosco Technical Institute, ETC La Carlota City College, La Consolacion School, Philippine Normal University, St. John’s Institute, St. Scholastica’s Academy, Trinity Christian School, and last conference’s first runner-up University of Negros Occ.-Recoletos.

Competing in the U16 category are Don Bosco Technical Institute, Doña Monserat Lopez National High School, Negros Occ. High School, Ramon Torres Nat’l High School (Bago), UNO-R, and USLS.

Launched last year as "Negros First U13 Football League", with Moises Padilla Elementary School football team bagging the inaugural title and the USLS-IS grabbing the championship in the second conference, the tournament adds the U16 category this year to bring more development to the children’s skills and personalities.

A brainchild of football patron Ricky Yanson of the Dynamic Football Club, the tournament is focused on promoting football among school children.

Tournament official Andrew Infante said that after one year, the success of the tournament can be seen in the children’s enjoyment of the game and their positive interaction with their fellow football players inside and outside the pitch.

“With the support of school officials - both public and private, coaches and parents, the league is slowly gaining popularity. Because of its encouraging result, the organizers are motivated to continue the program this year,” Infante said.*NAB

Ceres rules North Football League

Janrick Soriano scored the lone goal of the final match in the 60th minute to give Ceres Transport another championship and prevent Dynamic Builders from scoring a grandslam this year in the 3rd Conference of the North Football League at the Ayala North Point pitch in Talisay City, Sunday.

Soriano’s winning goal restored the Norman Fegidero-mentored Ceres team on top of the league after placing second twice to Dynamic Builders this year. It also affirmed Soriano’s status as the tournament most valuable player along with three of his teammates, who were cited for their impressive performance in NFL’s third conference.

Teeming with talents, Ceres had Michael Casas, the tournament’s best goalkeeper, Lemuel Unabia, best defender, and Joshua Fegidero, best midfielder. Jayson Panhay salvaged the best midfielder honors for Dynamic Builders while Kent Guevarra was named most improved player.

Ceres lineup is composed of Archie Pamilar, Bes dela Noche, Julius Navales, Paul Villanueva, Miguel Gonzales, Dominic Segaya, Ian Aspilla, Arvin Villaruel, Andy Coscoluela, Ariel Opelario, Mike Benedicto, Kenneth Dolloso, Edmund Escalona, Marvin Broce, James Dinsay, Nicolas Golez, Derek Locsin, Johndel de la Cruz, Paolo Deles, Miguel Rivero, Junjun Espino, Fegidero, Carlo Tacusalme, Oliver Colina, Mark Hilay, Ronnievic Pallerna, Casas, Unabia, Soriano, and Leo Rey Yanson.

Assisting Fegidero in the coaching task are Ronnie Tornilla and Simon Hulleza.

Now on its 6th year, the NFL started at the Villa Valderrama pitch in Mandalagan, Bacolod City, as a 9-a-side “barkada tournament” among the members of the La Salle-Bacolod alumni who are into football.

In 2010, the tournament started playing at the Ayala North Point with more clubs joining the competition and giving the three pioneers – Ceres, Dynamic Builders, and Trimaxi Agro – a stiff competition.

After claiming the championship in last year’s 2nd Conference Trimaxi finished second runner-up this year after blanking Jakalz, 2-0, in the battle for third place, Sunday. Aaron Amantillo scored Trimaxi’s first goal in the 11th minute while Jalsor Soriano sealed the win with a goal in the 75th minute.

Silver Dragon FC received the Fair Play award while Jakalz and Las Buenas FC completed the six-team cast of the tournament.

Meanwhile, after wrapping up the NFL competition, Ceres FC will focus on its title defense campaign in the PFF Smart National Club Championship national finals on December 9 to 21 in Bacolod City.

Ramon Janeo, member of the Ceres coaching staff that won the 2012 championship, said the team is presently training for the tournament and they hope to retain the championship.

With some of its players currently enrolled at the University of St. La Salle, Ceres FC team manager Leo Rey Yanson has also extended help to the La Salle-Bacolod team that won the championship in the 2013 University Games and the NOPSSCEA senior’s football.

Janeo said that Ceres is also planning to launch next year a football tournament that will strengthen the football community in Bacolod City.*NAB

Paglaum Complex to undergo facelift

After hosting many national and international competitions, the 40-year-old Paglaum Sports Complex in Bacolod City will finally get a facelift.
This was revealed by Angel “Nonong” Verdeflor, provincial sports coordinator, during a recent press conference.
According to him, the provincial government’s plan to renovate the said sports facility will further strengthen the sports hosting capability of the province. If restored, it will serve as alternative venue to Panaad Park and Stadium, particularly for football competition.
“Our Panaad pitch has been suffering from unrested condition after hosting non-stop football tournaments. With the restoration of the Paglaum facility, it will give our Panaad Stadium some time to rest,” Verdeflor said. “Aside from the football field, we are also planning to refurbish our tennis, basketball and volleyball courts,” he added.
On the other hand, Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella welcomed the development saying  this will further boost the city and the province’s sports tourism road map.
Puentevella, who also serves as FIFA’s Marketing and TV Committee director, said he will find a way to help in the rehabilitation of the facility given that it’s more accessible to the public during events.
“I will try to ask how FIFA could help in restoring this historical sports complex,” he added.
The city chief executive also said that he will ask Gov. Alfredo Marañon if the province will allow at least 200-meter rubberized tracks in Paglaum to serve as alternative training venue for athletes in the athletics events.
“Though it’s just a 200-meter tracks, but (it is) good enough to help train our short distant athletes in preparation for higher events like Palarong Pambansa,” he said.
Right after Paglaum Sports Complex was established in 1970’s under the late Gov. Alfredo Montelibano Jr., it played host to the Palarong Pambansa in 1971, 1974 and 1979./
