Converting two penalty kicks in the 21 st and 34 th minutes, Ceres-La Salle FC finally nailed their first win in the AFC Cup as they beat Tampines Rovers, 2-1, in the Group E Qualifier at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City last night.
The historic win saw the reigning UFL champions starting aggressively and taking possession of the ball in the first half despite playing in a flooded field. The match was delayed for more than an hour due to the heavy downpour at the Panaad.
Twenty minutes into play, Ceres got the break as referee Wang Di charged Tampines' Kwon Jun with a handball. Bienvi Marañon completed the penalty as he calmly rolled the ball into the net for the home team's first goal.
Fifteen minutes later, Irwah Shah of Tampines fouled Gallardo inside the box paving the way for Ceres' second goal.
“The team went into this mach with the mind-set of winning and getting the 3 points,” Ceres head coach Franklin Muescan said at the post-match press conference.
“We prepared well for this mentally and physically and the hard work paid off,” Muescan added.
However, he admitted that after scoring the two goals in the first half, Ceres' performance dipped in the fiinal half, allowing Billy Mehmet to score for Tampines in the 64 th minute.
“Players' performance went down in the second half but we managed to hold on and maintain the organization of defense. Our goalkeeper did a lot of crucial saves,” Muescan said.
The win augurs well for Ceres, who will be playing in the finals of the UFL this Saturday against Global.
Coach Muescan said playing in the UFL finals is a good preparation for their away match in the AFC Cup against Selangor FA in Malaysia on April 26.*NAB

Malaysia - Selangor FA arrive in Bacolod for AFC Cup Group E Qualifiers vs. Ceres
The Selangor FA team from Malaysia arrived in Bacolod City last night ready to face home team Ceres – La Salle FC in the 2016 AFC Cup Group E Qualifiers at the Panaad Stadium tomorrow.
Fresh from a 2-0 win back home against AirAsia, their third victory in the Malaysian Super League, the Selangor Red Giants are ready for the 7 p.m. battle tomorrow against the Ceres – La Salle FC.
Equally prepared to defend their home turf are the members of the Ceres team, who are coming off a morale-boosting three straight wins in the UFL that produced 26 goals.
In an interview over the RMN radio station Saturday, Ceres head coach Ali Go said they have been preparing continuously for the AFC Cup Qualifiers for almost a month now.
While the 15-0 drubbing of the Nomads and the 9-0 rout of Pasagard seemingly give Ceres FC some mantle of formidability, coach Go said the parameter of the team's readiness were their 2-1 win against Loyola in the UFL and the tune up games in Singapore early this month.
“The cohesion that was missing before when we played in Singapore is now there in the way our players pass the ball. The combination is getting better and better,” Go said.
Despite the home advantage, he said they are not taking things for granted against Selangor.
With their new coach Zainal Abidin Hassan, Go said the team has changed from a counter attack squad and long ball system to a possession-based team.
“I heard a lot about their coach and he is very good one…also a legend in Malaysia,” he said of the new coach for the Red Giants.
In the remaining days prior to tomorrow's match, Go said their focus is on how to defend as a group and move as a team together.

On 2016 AFC Cup: We don’t underrate our opponents – Go

Ceres-La Salle FC is not taking their opponents lightly.
This was stressed by Ceres FC head coach Ali Go during yesterday’s press conference.
The club will play against Selangor FC (Malaysia) on February 23 and Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd. on May 10 for the 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup Group E Qualifiers at the Panaad Park and Stadium. Their games will continue on April 12 against Tampines Rovers FC (Singapore) at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Go said although they have reviewed videos of Selangor and Tampines Rovers’ previous matches, these teams might have undergone recent developments.
“We look into these teams seriously. They are strong teams in their respective leagues,” he added.
And to ensure that the Bacolod-based club is ready against their AFC counterparts, the Ceres FC will have tune-up matches against JP Voltes on January 26 and Stallions on January 28 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium and at the Laguna field, respectively.
On February 1 and 3, Ceres FC will face Balestier Khalsa FC and Albirex Niigata Singapore FC, respectively, in Singapore.
Both Balestier Khalsa and Albirex Niigata play with Singapore’s S. League. The latter is a satellite team of Albirex Niigata of Japan, and its players come from Japan.
With the acquisition of Fil-German standouts Stephan Schröck and Kevin Ingreso, Go said there’s no doubt that the team is stronger now.
“The addition of Schröck and Ingreso are of big help to the team. We became a deeper team as our first eleven and second team can play at a given time. Hopefully, we’re ready before our first match,” he added.
“They are experienced players,” Go stressed, “but this is a team sport. All players will have to work hard and the cohesion of the team is very important to score a win. Though Ceres became a strong team with Schröck and Ingreso in the roster, 1 or 2 or even 9 players cannot beat a team of 11 that play as a team. We have to play as a team to make all players count.”
On why he chose Ceres FC, Schröck said his team in Germany (SpVgg Greuther Fürth) asked him to search for another club to play. Although there were offers from teams in the Middle East, he wanted to play for the Philippines because “I was happy with the Philippines and wanted to play for the UFL.”
Ingreso, on his part, said it was Patrick Reichelt and Manny Ott who talked to him and told him good things about Ceres.

Schrock ready to play for Ceres

Filipino-German midfielder and Philippine Azkals mainstay Stephan Schrock arrived in Bacolod City yesterday to join the Ceres-La Salle FC as the squad prepares for the Group E qualifiers of the AFC Cup 2016.
Schrock said it has always been his dream to play in the Philippines and he is glad to be part of the Ceres team.
“First of all I have to fit in into the team and get back on my daily training,” Schrock told local sports reporters.
While he was not yet able to talk to head coach Ali Go about the details of his role in the team, Schrock said he is ready to play any position the coach would assign him.
Despite receiving offers to play for teams in the Middle East, Thailand and another club in Germany, the quick footed midfielder said “the only (thing) I am happy with was to play in the Philippines.”
Schrock said he will be playing for Ceres until middle of August while on loan from SpVgg Greuther Fürth, his club in Germany.
Meanwhile, coach Go describes Schrock's entry into the team as “big” as he is a very experienced player whose work ethic will push all players to their potential.
“He is an impact player who could change the result of a game,” coach Go said, adding that the Fil-German has a dynamic pace and can read the game well.
“But this is a team sport, all players will have to work hard and cohesion or playing as a team is important for the win,” the coach emphasized.
Schrock's inclusion into the Ceres FC lineup is a booster to the team's chances in the qualifiers of the AFC 2016 where they will face the Tampines/Warriors of Singapore, Selangor of Malaysia, and Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi of Bangladesh in Group E.
Two of three home games of Ceres will be played at Panaad Stadium while the third is scheduled at Rizal Memorial Complex.
The Panaad games will be on Feb. 23 against Malaysia and on May 10 against Bangladesh on May 10.
The Rizal Memorial match against Singapore is scheduled on April 12.
The Ceres away games are on March 8 in Bangladesh, March 15 in Singapore and April 26 in Malaysia.

New Ceres-LS challenge for Schrock

NATIONAL football team star Stephan Schrock is looking forward to rejuvenating his club career at AFC Cup-bound Ceres-La Salle following his surprising move from German second division side Greuther Furth.
The dynamic midfielder has spent his entire career in Germany playing for his boyhood club, Furth, as well as Hoffenheim and Eintracht Frankfurt in the top-flight before deciding to move to the Philippines.
Speaking for the first time since his deal was announced by the Bacolod-based club, the 29-year-old said he’s looking forward to a new challenge with Ceres where he will team up with fellow Fil-Germans Patrick Reichelt, Manny Ott and Kevin Ingreso.
“I’m very happy,” Schrock, who has scored four goals in 22 international matches, told the Inquirer. “I can’t wait to start.”
The transfer to Ceres will also make it easier for Schrock to represent the Azkals as he no longer needs to travel from Europe for the matches.
Perhaps the only thing that has made the move difficult is being away from his family, Schrock said.
“It will be hard during the first part of my stay, but they will follow in April,” said Schrock who has a 3-year-old son with wife Pina.
Schrock is undoubtedly the most high profile signing of the off-season having just played in the German first division a couple of seasons ago. In fact, Schrock was responsible for marking French star Franck Ribery when Frankfurt played German champions Bayern Munich in 2014.
Schrock will also play for Ceres in the UFL Cup which begins Feb. 6 at Rizal Memorial Stadium. Ceres opens its campaign in the AFC Cup on Feb. 23 against Malaysian side Selangor at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.
UFL general manager Rely San Agustin believes Schrock’s presence will help raise the level in the club competition.
“I hope I do,” said Schrock, hoping his presence will boost club football in the country. “You know how much I love Philippine football.”

On its official Facebook page yesterday, Ceres-La Salle FC confirmed Shrock's move to the team.
“April fools no more, the long awaited moment is happening for Philippine football , International Filipino Footballer Stephan Markus Schröck is heading his way to the province of Negros Occidental next week to join the pride of Negros Ceres La Salle Football Club in preparation for AFC Cup, UFL Cup and UFL league 2016”, the message posted on the team's page said.
Although team official have not responded to inquiries as of press deadline, Schrock himself confirmed the report with a message on his official Facebook page, saying he is happy with the new challenge awaiting him with his new club, Ceres La Salle FC.
Schrock, who played in the Bundesliga, Germany's professional football league, was also a member of Germany's U-18, U-19, and U-20 junior teams.
As the latest addition to the Ceres-La Salle FC, he will be playing with fellow Azkals Angel Guirado, Patrick Reichelt, Manny Ott, Paul Mulders and Martin Steuble.

Following their heartbreaking experience in Maldives during the last Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup, the Bacolod City-based Ceres La Salle FC is hoping to get a favorable result this time when the official draw commences on December 10-12 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“Hopefully we will get a good draw for AFC Cup. I think the Ceres team now can surprise a lot of teams in AFC,” said club director and mentor Ali Rojas Go. “There are strong teams in AFC Cup while there are some teams we can really beat,” he added.
“So the draw will be a big factor here. Our target is to make it to the next round of the group stage; this stage is a knockout round. And with the help of our home games in Negros, we can have a good chance,” he added.

Ceres FC resumes training for AFC, UFL tourneys

The Bacolod-based and reigning United Football League (UFL) Champion Ceres-La Salle FC has resumed their training at the North Football pitch in Talisay City ahead of the 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup and UFL’s 2015-2016 Season.
This was disclosed Thursday by club director and head coach Ali Bernard Go, who attended the opening of the PFF-Smart National U22 Amateur Championship at the Panaad Park and Stadium.
Go said the club will undergo rigid preparation for these two major tournaments next year where Ceres FC will play 3 home matches in the AFC Cup elimination.

The Bacolod-based and reigning United Football League (UFL) Champion Ceres-La Salle FC has resumed their training at the North Football pitch in Talisay City ahead of the 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup and UFL’s 2015-2016 Season.
This was disclosed Thursday by club director and head coach Ali Bernard Go, who attended the opening of the PFF-Smart National U22 Amateur Championship at the Panaad Park and Stadium.
Go said the club will undergo rigid preparation for these two major tournaments next year where Ceres FC will play 3 home matches in the AFC Cup elimination.

Spanish winger joins Ceres FC
Ceres-La Salle FC has a new import.
The new player is Bienvenido Marañón Morejón, 28, a Spanish winger.
Ali Go, club director and head coach, confirmed Morejon's sign-up as part of the continuing team build-up.
The new player had played for Soquellamos, a Second Division team in Spain, since 2013, and made nine goals in 40 appearances.
Morejón last played with Socuéllamos in the Spain's 2nd Division from 2013 until his transfer to Ceres FC – scoring nine goals in 40 appearances.*ADC

Ceres FC falls short in AFC Cup playoffs
MANILA, Philippines- Two time national club champs Ceres La Salle FC was denied of a spot in the group stage of the AFC Cup after being beaten by Maziya Sports and Recreation Club, 1-0, at the latter's home stadium in Male, Maldives on Tuesday, February 17
Both squads exchanged attacks in the opening half but none went through the opposing defenses.
The eerie goal-less silence ended when Maziya's Mohamed Samdhooh slotted the ball to the back of the net in the 82nd minute.
Ceres, on the other hand, tried to equalize and send the match into extra time care off Patrick Reichelt but his shot did not pierce through their rivals' defense.
The Maldivian club eliminated Ceres and will now advance to the next stage of the continental football tile where they will be housed in Group E with India's Bengalaru FC, Persipura Jayapura of Indonesia and Singaporean side Warriors FC.
One more Filipino club remains in the competition as Global FC has yet to make its debut in Group G. –

Ceres FC arrives in Maldives

The Negros Occidental-based and multi-titled Ceres-La Salle FC has finally arrived in Maldives for their scheduled match tomorrow against the home-team of Maziya Sports and Recreation Club of Maldives for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup play-off at the National Stadium in Malé.
The team left Bacolod early Saturday for Manila, then Singapore to Maldives.
Ceres FC Korean head coach Cha Soungyooung saidthey will do their best to win this game and bring home games in Bacolod. “I believe in our team. I believe in our players. We will do our best to win this game,” he assured.
Club Director Ali Bernard Go also reiterated that the team is in good spirit and has been training hard for this game. “Butdefinitely our tactics against Maziya will also be different from the United Football League,” he added.
Team captain Fil-Spanish JuaniGuirado and co-skipper Michael Casas saidtheir team is ready for the match regardless of the number of home crowd inside the arena. “We are 200% ready for the battle. If we win this game, it will boost our confidence going to the next stage,” they stressed during the press conference held earlier for the members of the media in Bacolod before they left for Manila.
The winner of this faceoff will join Group E alongside India’s Bengaluru, PersipuraJayapura of Indonesia, and Warriors of Singapore.
The AFC Cup is an annual international association football competition between domestic clubs run by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Qualification to the competition is available to clubs from AFC-affiliated countries that fall into the AFC’s “developing nations” category. Ceres FC prepares for PFF-Smart C’ships

The long vacation is over for Bacolod-based and multi-titled Ceres-La Salle FC as they returned to their regular training yesterday as part of their preparation to defend their Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart Club Championship title, for the third time, on the last week of January.
The reigning back-to-back champion will lead the eight teams in the final round of the competition scheduled on January 22 to 31 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Among other teams that qualified in this round are defending United Football League champion Global FC, Loyola-Meralco FC, Kaya FC, Stallion FC, Laos FC, University of Cebu-Erco, and M’Lang FC.
The Stallion side will be representing Iloilo; the Laos FC and University of Cebu-Erco will banner the Leyte and Cebu football associations;andM’Lang FC of North Cotabato will be Mindanao’s lone qualifier.
Meanwhile, the other four teams are the Top 4 teams during the recent FA League Cup.

Ali Go: 2015 is a big year for football

Ceres-La Salle FC club director Ali Go, over the weekend, said that 2015 is a big year for football.
“Lots of tournaments are coming – the PFF-Smart Cup, UFL League, UFL Cup and the AFC Cup. And our team will begin the training on January 8 as we prepare to defend our PFF-Smart Club title,” Go revealed.
The Ceres FC official also hinted that they might have some new players coming in. “As of the moment we are still negotiating with some players. We might get one foreigner and a Filipino. Carli (de Murga) is injured, so we have to get a replacement,” he stressed.
However, Go did not give any hint on the identity of the new players or from what particular club they are coming from.

AFTER accomplishing their mission for the club, Ceres-La Salle’s Azkals have shifted their focus on their duty for the country. Ceres stars Patrick Reichelt, Juani Guirado, Manny Ott, and Jeffrey Christiaens missed the national team’s friendly against Nepal in Qatar last Saturday following club management’s decision not to release them. Preparing for the United Football League’s Football Alliance League Cup knockout phase was the main reason, they stressed. “It’s very big to play for the country, but there are times when you have to step back as a player and let people who know better decide,” Reichelt said. “No one among us wanted to miss the friendly. But it was a reasonable decision for our club. We had to stay here.” “Every single player wants to play for the national team, but we need to respect the local teams and we are working hard to win something,” Guirado added. “And they (management) are spending a lot of time and money for us to win.” They were rewarded with the FA League Cup title after beating Global FC, 2-1, in the finale on Thursday night. MANILA, Philippines – Amid the upcoming preparations going into the Suzuki Cup on November, several national team booters playing for Ceres La Salle FC will have to miss the Qatar training camp due to their duties to their club.
As part of the build up of the Azkals ahead of their forthcoming tournament, the team management headed by Coach Thomas Dooley opted to hold a two-game training camp in Doha, Qatar in which they will face the Nepalese national team and Qatari club Al Ahli SC.
In line with this, the Azkals management has summoned 21 players, 5 coming from Ceres FC, to join the training camp.
But they'll be without Jeffrey Christiaens, Juani Guirado, Manny Ott and Patrick Reichelt. According to Ceres FC club director Ali Go says that their club would not be releasing its players for their national team duty due to the unhealthy schedule that it would pose for the players of their club.
“It's true that we did not release our players for the national team friendly in Qatar,” Go told Rappler in an interview. “The main reason is very obvious; the schedule is not good at all for the players.
“I think they have to think about the players’ health and recovery and also the club’s situation,” he added.
“If you’re trying to be professional we should start from the right schedule of games [because] recovery of players [is important].”
Ceres La Salle FC have qualified for the semis of the United Football League (UFL) FA League Cup after trouncing Stallion FC, 3-1, during the quarterfinals of the tournament. They are scheduled to face Pachanga Diliman FC for the semifinals on November 4th.
Meanwhile, coach Go stated that they already released Paul Mulders for the overseas training camp as he has yet to make his debut appearance for his new club.
Nevertheless, the club director emphasized that upon the end of the current UFL tournament, they will be prepared to release their players for their duties to the national team. – Rappler.com

The two-time Philippine Football Federation-Smart Club Champion defending titlist and United Football League Division 2 champion Ceres-La Salle FC officially signed up six more players yesterday during the contract signing and press conference held at 21 Bar in Bacolod City.
The Bacolod-based club signed up Azkals veteran turned Ceres FC team captain Fil-Spanish Juani Guirado, Fil-Ams forward Nate Burkey and defender Jason Sabio, Fil-Belgian winger Jeffrey Christaeans, Fil-German midfielder Manny Ott, and Spanish veteran forward Adrián Gallardo.
The newly-signed players will join the star-studded team composed of local and international standouts led by co-skipper and veteran goalkeeper Michael Casas, second choice keeper Bago City-native Eduard Sacapaño, Talisay City’s Camelo Tacusalme and Jalsor Soriano, Negrenses Arnie Pasinabo Jr., Lemuel Unabia, J Baguioro, and Jayson Panhay, Fil-Italian twins Marvin and Marwin Angeles, Fil-German Patrick Reichelt, Fil-Spanish Carlie de Murga, Fil-Belgian Angelo Marasigan, and foreign reinforcements Orman Okunaiya, Kevin Capolei, Jin ho Kim, Kim Sang min, Kyum-Son Cho, and Yong Chan Son.

According to Go, the team worked hard to familiarize themselves with the system. “Yes, we have players coming from various football approaches like of Europe, United States, South Korea and the Philippines, but we have one system in the Ceres FC and that is what binds us,” he said.
Facing the challenges of having several players playing in the national team, Go said that they have been working closely with the Azkals’ management on how to deal with some issues concerning Ceres’ players. “While the club is looking at some tough tournaments this month onward, they are also looking at arranging details on rendering service to the country,” the former national team striker stressed, adding, “All these events are important to us at Ceres, and we are not taking things lightly or selecting which to prioritize.”
This weekend, the Ceres FC will start its campaign for the UFL’s FA League Cup – going up against a tough group composed of Loyola’s Meralco Sparks, Stallion GC, Manila Jeepney FC, Pachanga Diliman FC, Green Archers United, and Army FC.
