Younghusbands sets of youth football tourney

To promote football among Filipino children and hopefully, hone future World Cup athletes, The Younghusband Football Academy (TYFA) and Muntinlupa Parañaque Las Piñas Football Association (MPLFA) opened a youth league on Saturday at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa City. The football league, which is participated by children ages four to 17 years old from 15 teams, aims not only to harness the skills of the young athletes but to introduce football to less fortunate children.

“This league is about you. You are the future of football. It’s not about winning. It’s about your development—in leadership, hardwork and teamwork,” Philippine National Football team midfielder and TYFA co-founder Philip Younghusband told the children participating the event.

Younghusband, 22, believes that Philippines has its big potential of building future World Cup athletes. He even stressed that the World Cup champions’ height ranges only form 5’6" to 5’7", which is also the average height of male Filipinos.

“I believe in 12 years time, we can produce our first World Cup team,” Younghusband said.

“We organize the league on a regular basis because we believe that it is an effective method to develop the skills of the players,” said Cathy Rivilla MPLFA president and match commisioner of the Asian Football Confederation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The sporting event for the youth also paved way to introduction of the 1 Goal “Education for all” signature campaign, which is also supported by the FIFA. Younghusband calls everyone to support the campaign through just signing.

The campaign, through the 30 million signatures it will gather worldwide, aims to urge world leaders who will attend this September’s United Nations Heads of States summit in New York to prioritize education in their countries.

Six teams vie in Rexona football

MANILA, Philippines - The Rexona-Republic Cup kicks off tomorrow at the Manila Polo Club main polo field with six teams seeing action, led by 2008 Lotto Cup champion the Makati Titans.

Other teams competing in the seven-weekend tournament, presented by Rexona and sponsored by Balls TV and organized by the Pureplay-Titans Football Alliance (PTFA), are the Caliraya FC, Salcedo FC, Legaspi FC, Loyola Agila FC, and the Urdaneta Tarsiers.

Other games will be held at the Alabang Country Club.

Opening day games pit Loyola Agila FC against the Makati Titans; the Salcedo FC against the Urdaneta Tarsiers; and the Caliraya FC against FC Legaspi, starting at 2:30 p.m.

The second set of games from 3:30 p.m. features the Salcedo FC-FC Legaspi match, the Makati Titans against the Caliraya FC, and the Urdaneta Tarsiers against Loyola Agila FC.

Alaska football fest kicks off

MANILA, Philippines—Two hundred fifty teams with a total of 3,500 boys and girls from all over the Philippines will compete in 12 age group categories for the 14th Alaska Football Cup at Ayala Country Club on November 14 to 15.

“For this year, we received a total of 400 applications but the venue can only accommodate a maximum of 250 teams,” said tournament director Tomas Lozano.

“This only shows how football at the youth level is growing tremendously. I just hope that this would be the same in the professional level but we don’t have much clubs here in the Philippines,” added Lozano.

Champion teams from last year’s Alaska Cup include the Nomads Football Club, Faith Academy, Cebu International School and Ateneo de Manila University Manila.

Kids age 6-14 years old from different categories will play on the first day of the tournament while those in the older age groups play on the second day. Games start 7:30 a.m.

Along with teams from Metro Manila, there will be also be teams from the provinces including Bacolod, Cebu, Naga, Davao, Baguio and Los Banos.

Big firms support new football league

MANILA, Philippines - LBC Express, Inc. will be the main presenter when the United Football League kicks off its three-month long tournament next week.
Other backers of the UFL, sanctioned by the National Capital Region Football Association and held in cooperation with the Philippine Football Federation are Rudy Project, Gatorade, Nike Park, Asia Speedy, and McDonald’s.
It will be hosted by the United Football Club Association in cooperation with the Football Alliance.
Sixteen teams from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, expats and other top football clubs in the country will vie for the inaugural Cup. Each team is supported by a corporate sponsor, including Phiten, Digiprint, Rider, Selecta, 2GO, Smartmatic, Aloha Boardsports, Orient Freight, Inc., Victory Liner, Inc., ATR Kim Eng Securities, Inc., and E-Games among others.

Boost for football - United Football League

There’s a determined group of young professionals out to make a push for Philippine football and it appears they’re on track to give the world’s most popular sport a shot in the arm.
The consensus is Philippine football is dying because of lack of vision and direction from the Philippine Football Federation, the POC-accredited NSA governing the sport. While football is widely played at the school level, crack players aren’t enticed to continue playing beyond graduation because there isn’t a strong “premier” league to participate in.
Now comes the so-called Football Alliance which is affiliated with the United Football Cup Association (UFCA), a regular member of the NCR Football Association that is the PFF’s conscience bloc. The UFCA is behind the United Football League (UFL) which has nine teams and is on its eighth season. The Alliance hopes to take the UFL to the next level by organizing a full season’s schedule starting with The Cup from October to December, moving to The League from January to May and ending with The Invitationals in June.
The Alliance will name its league La Copa Filipina with four cornerstones – a corporate series for commercial support, a youth summer camp, a serious presence in media and a dedicated promotion of merchandise.
The Alliance is led by what I call the Magnificent 7 – a team of young executives who share a passion for football. The group is made up of LBC CEO Santi Araneta, 2GO SVP and COO Mike Camahort, Magma Inflatables president and CEO Antonio Longa, Mutual Fund Management Corp. president Philip Hagedorn, ATR Kim Eng chairman and president Lorenzo Roxas, Orient Freight president and CEO Monchu Garcia and LBC marketing director Javy Mantecon.
Together, the Magnificent 7 is looking to restore football’s once lofty standing as a significant sport in the country.

Mantecon said the program is doable. For the first tournament, 16 clubs will be tapped to play 38 matches. The teams are Manila Nomads, Union Football Club, Loyola Football Club, Air Force, Navy, Army, Alabang Grins Football Club, Laos Football Club, MPL Football Club, Kaya Football Club, Mama Africa Football Club, Sunken Garden Football Club, Baguio Football Club, Manila All-Japan Football Club, Lions Football Club and Inter-Manila Football Club.
The roster of members makes for a multi-national character and over 400 players will be enlisted. Venues will be the Rizal Memorial, Ateneo football field, Nomads and the Philippine Army field in Taguig.
