20th Alaska Football Cup draws record field

MANILA, Philippines - The Alaska Football Cup has come a long way since it was launched a couple of decades ago, luring more than 6,000 players and over 400 teams when it staged its 20th edition at the Alabang Country Club recently.

Alaska Milk president and CEO Wilfred Uytengsu said it was a privilege to hold the biggest and most successful grassroots-development program on the local football scene even as he recalled the tournament’s modest start.

“In 1996, we had 350 players and 25 teams. In our 20th anniversary, we held a three-day event in 26 football fields with 6,150 players in 410 teams. In those 20 years we’ve had 12,159 teams of over 58,000 players play 13,800 games with over 40,000 goals scored. We’ve come a long way,” said Uytengsu.

The Alaska chief also cited the dedication of tournament organizer Tomas Lozano and his role not only in helping promote the tournament but also in discovering some of the best football players in the country who eventually went on to play in the Azkals national team.

“Over these 20 years we’ve also had the opportunity to have some really fantastic players participate in the event. We are proud to say that many in the ranks of the Azkals have come through the Alaska Cup, including Ali Borromeo, Roel Gener, Chieffy Caligdong and Amani Aguinaldo,” said Uytengsu.

Alaska Milk encourages sports engagement as it instills positive values during the early stages of a child’s life.

“Alaska Football Cup is more than just discovering elite players. It’s about promoting teamwork, commitment and dedication. We hope that as players you will keep those characteristics in mind. It’s a privilege to be here to open the 20th Alaska Cup,” said Uytengsu.    

The AFC is the highly anticipated annual football tournament for today’s young athletes with school teams and football clubs from all over the Philippines, including Masbate, Baguio, Negros Occidental, Cebu, Davao, Palawan, Legaspi, Laguna, Batangas, Bukidnon, Zambales, Pampanga, Tarlac, Ilocos, Bicol, Romblon, Davao Sur, Compostela Valley, Quezon, Cavite, Albay, Pangasinan, Bacolod, Iloilo, Mindoro and Metro Manila participating.

AFS captures men’s Open crown

AFS captured the men’s open championship after downing Far Eastern University, 2-1, in the Alaska Football Cup 2012 yesterday at Ayala Alabang Country Club fields.

Led by Most Valuable Player Matthew Hartmann, AFS wrapped up the tournament unbeaten starting from its four-game sweep of the elimination round.

A former youth player at English club Portsmouth, Hartmann relied on his vast international experience as well as his clever play, proving crucial for AFS’ campaign.

Hartmann, who is under contract with UFL club Loyola Meralco Sparks, also saw action in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games and has scored one goal for the national side.

Ateneo copped the Boys 10 title after blasting Makati FC Elite, 3-0, in the finals.

Don Bosco Victorias picked up the Boys 8 crown also at the expense of Makati FC Elite, 2-0.

AFS clipped Dolphins United in the Final Four, 3-2, after drubbing Superbad FC, 2-0, in the quarterfinals.

Dominating from the get-go, AFS amassed 12 points with victories over Pampanga Agricultural College (6-1), Super Friends FC (2-1), ABC-Stars Naga City (2-0) and Leylam FC Cebu (2-0) to top Group A in the eliminations.

Runner-up FEU dropped an early game to finish second with nine points behind La Salle’s 12 in Group D eliminations.

But the Tamaraws, whose core ruled the University Games held late last month in Bacolod City, reached the finals after stunning the Archers in the semifinals with a 3-0 shutout.

It was a fitting follow-up to their 6-1 quarterfinal triumph over Manila All Japan.

FEU Energen shines as Alaska football kicks off

ALMOST 4,000 players from 280 teams nationwide kicked off their bids as the two-day Alaska Football Cup 2012 unfolded yesterday at Ayala Alabang Country Club fields.

Fielding teams from various age groups were varsity teams and youth football clubs from Metro Manila, Baguio, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Laguna, Batangas, Ilocos, Bicol, Leyte, Cebu and Davao.

In the 16-under age group, FEU Energen and La Salle Zobel emerged as favorites after overwhelming their early opponents in the elimination round.

FEU Energen led the Boys 16 Group A with nine points, built on huge shutout victories over Quezon City Science High School (7-0), Ateneo de Davao (4-0) and Eastmont FC (5-0).

La Salle Zobel paced the Girls 16 Group A with 12 points following convincing triumphs against Westfield IS Angeles (12-0), Ateneo de Cebu (2-1), Angels FC (8-0) and Canossa Academy (7-0).

Similarly putting a dominant show in the Boys 14, FEU Energen racked up nine points after shutting out Singapore School Manila (8-0), Tarlac FS (12-0) and Xavier (6-0) in Group A.

Group A’s Tanauan FC and Group E’s Ateneo de Davao also got off to unbeaten starts for nine markers in the Boys 14.

Tanuan FC downed Tarlac FS (5-0), Leveriza FC (1-0) and Singapore School Manila (4-0), while Ateneo de Davao clobbered Brent IS Manila (2-1), Tarlac Football School (3-0) and Payatas FC (3-0).

In Boys 12, Olongapo City FC triumphed over CIE Tacloban City (5-0), Raya FC (2-0), Westfields IS Angeles (1-0), but bowed to Makati FC-Elite (1-4) for nine points in Group A.

Ateneo girl booters win fifth Alaska Cup crown

THE Ateneo de Davao girls had another successful campaign in the annual Alaska Cup when they captured their fifth straight crown in the 12-under category recently in Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa.

The Ateneo girls beat Nomads FC in the finals, 2-1, courtesy of Joana Marie Adao to cap another amazing run in one of the country's biggest football event for the young booters.


Adao went on to win Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors, her second straight individual award in the Alaska Cup, which was staging its 16th edition.

Ateneo made it a double celebration when the the 8-under team also emerged champion.

The Ateneo girls reached the finals after beating DSL Lipa in the semifinals, 5-0, while Nomads FC earned the right to play the Davao booters following its 2-1 win over Sakya.

In the battle for third, Sakya topped DSL Lipa.

Aside from Adao, playing for Ateneo were Bea Dongon Deluna, Patricia Francisco, Therese Reyes, Kyra Paronda, Kyra Gabinete, Michaela Co and Drew Datumanong.

"I’m always proud of the team," said Ateneo coach Reynalyn Ranada Ravanes. "They did well and did their very best to win."

Sakya booters to compete in Alaska Football Cup

THREE Philippine Academy of Sakya Inc. Davao teams left yesterday to campaign for honors in the Alaska Football Cup which kick offs on Saturday and Sunday at the Ayala Alabang Country Club.


Sakya team manager Michelle Uy, in an interview at Coco's Restaurant, said they are joining the prestigious tournament for the second straight year.

"We are happy that from last year's two teams, we were able to form three teams this year. We are competing in the elementary girls, boys 10-under and boys 12-under divisions. Just being able to participate again is a big thing for us," Uy said.

The boys 10-under squad, which emerged boys 10-under champion in the 4th SOS Goal for a Cause at the Tionko field recently, is bannered by team captain Justin Uy, brothers Andrew and Arvin Tan, Kien Seballa, Mike Nicklaus Ling, Marvin So, Heinzson Lim and goal keeper Carlos Vinci Ostan.


Emil Farinas heads the cast for the boys 12-under team that is also composed of Roberto Gan, Ramon Polestico, Martin Bonleon, Hencci Lim, Kim Jude Seballa and goal keeper Alexander Lam. This team also bagged the boys 12-under title of the SOS bootfest.


Moria Calizo, Christiane Jade Carasig, Veronica Molano, Zuleika Yee, Gwen Francine Allado, Felice Tuason, Tiffany Arantos, Sophia Paredes, Lauren Pineda and goal keeper Sonia Paredes bannmer the elementary girls team. Sisters Kim and Thea Villacencio of St. Paul will beef the squad.


Christian Ea and Sandro Balderas will call the shots for the boys' teams while Nathaniel Ubas and Adel Salida will coach the girl booters.


Uy said they are hopeful since their elementary girls and boys 10-under teams, which competed in last year's Alaska Cup, are intact. But she expects bigger odds will come their way as more teams are participating this year.


The Sakya teams' participation in the inter-club competition was backed up by the academy's Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) under its president Luis A. Uy.


"The parents of the players also gave their all-out support to the teams. We are also thankful to the school administration for allowing the kids to participate," Uy said. (MLSA)

Davao Football - Davao booters in Alaska Cup

WHEN the 2010 Alaska Cup Football Festival kicks off in November, the best young booters in the country converge again to show their skills at the Alabang Country Club in Ayala Alabang Village, Muntinlupa City.


Not to be left behind are players from Davao City, specifically from the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU), who are just determined to match their wares against the best in the country for two straight days, from November 13 to 14.

The fighting Ateneo de Davao won last year's 12-under crown, the third straight time it had done so in the category of the multi-division tournament.


Ateneo, starring Anna Aguilo and Mica Corrales, stunned Mirriam College in the championship showdown, 2-1, to wrap up the title.


Aside from Aguilo and Corrales, playing for the triumphant 12-under squad that time were Janna Barcemo, Kyra Dimaandal, Nina Arrieta, Alyanna Alovera, Bea Dongon, Kyra Paronda, Bea Panganiban, Therese Reyes and goalkepper Gabby del Fierro. The team was coached by Reynalyn Ravanes.

It was a double celebration of sorts for Ateneo after Barcemo was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Bannering this year's team will be Corrales, Dongon, Panganiban, Sanaa Jikiri, Patricia Francisco, Hannah Sindao, Thea Pilay, Bam Adao, Mia Co, Inah Rosales and Kyra Paronda.

The team will be competing under the name Ateneo de Davao United this time.

Davao will also be competing in other divisions such as 8-under, 10-under, 14-under and 16-under both in the girls' and boys' sides.

There will also be the Men's Open and the Ladies' Open divisions. (CRAM)

Davao Football - AdDU booters invited to compete in Europe

FIVE Ateneo de Davao 10 under team members have been invited to compete in a series of tournaments in Europe next year.

The said players won fourth place in the 14th Alaska Cup last month at the Alabang Country Club in Ayala, Alabang.


The five players, Joshua Royce S. Lim, Joshua Ryan S. Lagon, Kahlil Imran P. Jikiri, Gabriel Dominic A. Leyson, and Seth Ysrael J. Cabo, were scouted on the spot by head officials of the Alaska Cup headed by Ignacio Vicente.

Bai Lim, Joshua's mother, said they received the formal invitation last November 28.

The boys will play in the form part of the Makati Football Club representing the country in the Gothia Cup, the world youth cup in Goteborg, Sweden in July 2010.

They will also participate in the Barecelona Cup and Costa Blanca Cup in Spain.

The Ateneo de Davao 10 under team's fourth-place finish was already an excellent showing in the annual Alaska Cup considering the magnitude of this event in local football.

The Ateneo 8 under squad also finised fourth in the tournament where the Ateneo girls 12 under team emerged champion. (CRAM)

Alaska Cup - Ateneo de Davao girls seize crown

THE fighting Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) girls soccer team did it again.

Thrust into another tough battle, the Ateneo 12-under squad seized its third straight crown in the annual Alaska Cup football tournament last Nov. 14-15 at the Ayala Country Club in Ayala, Alabang.

The Ateneo girls bagged the title after beating Mirriam College in thrilling finals, 2-1.

Down by a goal at halftime, Ateneo de Davao rallied with two goals in the second half to seal the victory.

Anna Aguilo scored the equalizer for Ateneo, then Mica Corrales hit the go-ahead goal to stun Mirriam College. Ateneo also topped the girls 12-under in the 2007 and 2008 editions of the Alaska Cup.

It was a stellar performance for the Ateneo booters as they crushed the opposition in the eliminaton phase before punctuating their run with pulsating win for the championship.

Ateneo made it a double celebration after Janna Barcemo was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 12-under category.

Aside from Barcemo, Aguilo and Corrales, other memvbers of the team are Nina Arrieta, Alyanna Alovera, Bea Dongon, Kyra Paronda, Bea Panganiban, Therese Reyes and goalkeeper Gabby del Fierro.

In the girls 14-under category, Ateneo de Davao settled for second place after losing to powerhouse De La Salle-Zobel in the finals, 1-3.

Only Anna Aguilo was able to score in the finals for Ateneo, and the absence of striker Kyra Dimaandal also contributed to the team's failed bid for a twin kill.

Dimaandal missed the all-important match after suffering an injury in the semifinals against Makati Football Club.

Alaska football fest kicks off

MANILA, Philippines—Two hundred fifty teams with a total of 3,500 boys and girls from all over the Philippines will compete in 12 age group categories for the 14th Alaska Football Cup at Ayala Country Club on November 14 to 15.

“For this year, we received a total of 400 applications but the venue can only accommodate a maximum of 250 teams,” said tournament director Tomas Lozano.

“This only shows how football at the youth level is growing tremendously. I just hope that this would be the same in the professional level but we don’t have much clubs here in the Philippines,” added Lozano.

Champion teams from last year’s Alaska Cup include the Nomads Football Club, Faith Academy, Cebu International School and Ateneo de Manila University Manila.

Kids age 6-14 years old from different categories will play on the first day of the tournament while those in the older age groups play on the second day. Games start 7:30 a.m.

Along with teams from Metro Manila, there will be also be teams from the provinces including Bacolod, Cebu, Naga, Davao, Baguio and Los Banos.
