It has been a rollercoaster string of games for Kaya FC-Iloilo as of late, winning only one of the last three games and dropping to third in the PFL standings. In order to prevent falling any further, a win this weekend is paramount for the yellow and black.
Kaya fell short of a comeback in their latest match against Dynamic Herb Cebu FC, which came down to a final chance to equalize at the death that was cruelly turned away by the post. However, it was a pair of goals conceded earlier in the second half that turned the match on its head—and now the boys find themselves behind in the ongoing title race.
Coach Yu Hoshide addressed the situation directly, stating, “The players played well and they all did their very best, but the result just didn’t go our way—which is why we were very disappointed after last Sunday.”
The home team’s advantage was evident from the opening whistle; the raucous crowd backing their team for the full 90 minutes as the twelfth man. The final 3-2 scoreline was a bitter pill for Iloilo to swallow as Cebu exacted their revenge for the 3-0 win earlier this season.
“Currently, it looks like the players’ confidence is also down because we didn’t expect to concede three goals,” Hoshide revealed. “So this next match against Mendiola is a really big and important challenge for us, one we must overcome to get our confidence back.”
Despite the Brave Men’s position as second to last on the league table, Mendiola FC 1991 are more than capable of pulling off the odd upset. Kaya will need to stay vigilant in this next match, lest they reap further payback for the 6-1 rout the last time these two teams met.
