UAAP Football - Tamaraws, Tigers forge showdown

FAR Eastern University crushed Ateneo, 4-0, Thursday to forge a title showdown with University of Santo Tomas in the 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s football tournament at the Ateneo Erenchun Field in Quezon City.

Jason Cordova scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season for the Tamaraws, who made it to the championship round for the fourth consecutive year with their sixth win, one draw and two losses.

Cordova struck in the 26th and 61st minutes, while Glester Sobremisana (12th minute) and Filsan Akut (90th minute) also scored for the Tams.

While the win gave FEU a seat in the finals, it also ended the finals aspirations of third placer La Salle (4-2-3), which drew with University of the East, 1-all.

FEU’s win came after UST defeated deposed champion University of the Philippines, 2-0, and clinched the twice-to-beat incentive in the finals with a 7-2-0 slate.

UST and FEU will clash on the last day of the elimination round on Sunday in a preview of their upcoming championship meeting on Feb. 25.

The two schools met in the championship three years ago, with UST emerging as the winner.

UP lost its chance to defend its title when league officials forfeited three of its won games after two of its players—Ghanaian Ayi Aryee and Nate De Guzman—were discovered to have suited up in the ongoing United Football League, which is prohibited under league rules. Peter Atencio
