Cebu Football - Abellana routs CIS in U17 finals

ABELLANA National School (ANS) Pomeroy successfully defended its crown as it routed the short-handed Cebu International School (ANS), 3-1, in the Boys 17 championship match of the 12th Aboitiz Cup at the Aboitiz Sports field yesterday.

ANS Pomeroy immediately worked its way on the offense end as it scored just a minute into the game courtesy of Carlito Abadia.

Prince Anthony Hanesin added another goal in the 17th minute with a strike inside the penalty box that bounced off a CIS defender and into the goal.

ANS Pomeroy showed its aggressiveness offensively in the first half as it dominated the possession and had more attempts.

In the second half, CIS, which was without two of its key players, ace striker Javier Hernandez and midfielder Emmanuelle Cunningham, had much needed lift in the offensive end as Mark Lotzof scored a well-calculated 30-yard shot to narrow the gap to 2-1.

However, Hanesin quickly countered with a breakaway goal to increase the lead to 3-1 just a minute later.

ANS Pomeroy successfully fended off the attack of CIS until the end of regulation.

With the victory, ANS Pomeroy won their third straight title in the Boys 17 category of Aboitiz Cup.

“It was a total team effort. They were inspired to defend their title,” ANS Pomeroy head coach Francis Ramirez told Sun.Star Cebu after the game.

This was also the third major title that ANS Pomeroy won this year.

ANS Pomeroy took home the crown in the Milo Little Olympics Nationals and the CAFC tournament and also placed second in the City Olympics and the Pintaflores tournament.

Don Bosco College (DBC) grabbed third place honors as they easily disposed of Sacred Heart School Jesuits (SHSJ), 4-0.

On the other hand, DBC A crushed Paref-Springdale, 5-1, to win the crown in the Boys 14 category.

Valentino Calvo led DBC with his hat trick, while Junray Arizabal and Christian Agot added a goal apiece.

Gandiel Koko scored the only goal for Paref-Springdale.

CIS won third place following a close 6-5 win over SHSJ.

Meanwhile, DBC A and Paref-Springdale will be facing each other in the Boys 12 finals next week after winning their respective semifinal games yesterday.

DBC A flattened CIS, 5-0, while Paref-Springdale edged out SHS-J, 6-5.
