ARCHRIVALS DE La Salle and Ateneo clash today, with both teams out to maintain their spots in the upper half of the table in the UAAP Season 78 men’s football tournament at the Moro Lorenzo Field.
The game is set at 2 p.m., followed by another key match- up between University of Santo Tomas and National University at 4 o’clock.
The Green Archers are running third with 23 points, while the Blue Eagles are in fourth with 21 points, two points ahead of fifth-running UST.
University of the Philippines has taken the lead with 27 points, while defending champion Far Eastern University, paying the price for its disappointing showing in its last two matches, slipped to second with 24 points.
Greggy Yang, who has scored seven goals so far this season, will lead De La Salle’s attack as it tries to reprise its 3-1 win over Ateneo in the season opener last Feb. 7.
Rookie Jarvey Gayoso and Mashu Yoshioka, who have tallied eight and seven goals, respectively, will banner Ateneo’s offensive but the Blue Eagles will miss assist man Mikko Mabanag, who will serve the last of his two-match suspension.
With 19 points, UST needs to win its remaining matches to boost its Final Four bid, with striker Onyok Busmion and the rest needing to elevate their game a notch higher.
The Bulldogs, who are languishing in sixth spot with 16, are also hoping to stay alive behind leading goal scorer Paolo Salenga.
