The United Football League has officially ruled out Division Two squad Cebu Queen City United from participating in the competition this season.
UFL head of football operations Ritchie Gannaban said the club won’t play its matches anymore after Queen City’s request for home games was turned down by the league.
“They’ve withdrawn. It’s as if they didn’t join,” he said.
Cebu Queen City asked the UFL to have at least half of its matches be played in its home turf after travelling from Cebu to Manila every week to play during its third-place finish in Division Two last year.
But the UFL said it was not yet ready for such a setup as most Division Two squads cannot afford the expenses of travelling outside Manila to play.
“So far, ‘di pa kaya. But we’re keeping our doors open,” said Gannaban, but added that Cebu Queen City could still suit up for the league’s future competitions if it wished to.
Sun.Star Cebu reported that Cebu Queen City wants to have home matches to minimize its expenses for its UFL stint and focus more on grassroots football programs in its home city.
The squad failed to show up in UFL’s debut at the new Emperador Stadium in McKinley Hill in Taguig last month. Since then, its scheduled matches have been ruled as default victories in favor of its supposed opponents.

ReplyDeleteMany of the 2nd div clubs doesnt have the same financial backing like what CQCU have. In the end, CQCU knew all about the financial expensive they would have to deal with when they joined the UFL.
ReplyDeleteWhat UFL needs, and CQCU needs is a deal with a local airline company like Cebu Pacific.

DeleteSadly, this was to be expected and it is a huge loss for the league as well as Philippine football. I don't see them returning without having a good chance of gaining promotion to Div 1 where they can compensate the flight costs with the extra money from the TV broadcasts. If Ceres join Div 2 along with Gen Trias next year then they are def the favorites for promotion and CQCU will have to wait atleast 2 years until they have a good chance to fight for promotion... too long if you ask me.
