Negros eyes solo lead in PFF Suzuki U-23 Cup

AFTER posting two consecutive victories over the weekend, the Ceres-Negros Selection will be facing the Iloilo booters 1 p.m. Monday to earn the leadership in the ongoing PFF-Suzuki U-23 Cup Visayas Regionals scheduled April 15-19, 2011 at Siliman Ball Park in Dumaguete.

Mentored by former national men’s team head coach Norman Fegidero, the local squad blanked host-Dumaguete Sunday, 3-0 behind two goals from Jovin Bedic in the first half of play while Joshua Beloya scored on a penalty kick over an illegal sweep inside the box during the second half.

Last Saturday, the Negrenses also trashed Cebu, 3-0. Aldrin Dolino scored two goals in the 4th and 14th minute, respectively, to close the first period with a 2-0 advantage. In the second half, Beloya registered another goal in the 65th minute to seal the Negrenses’ first win.

Meanwhile, Iloilo demolished Leyte with an 8-0 score on Saturday and posted its second win after a 2-0 triumph over Cebu on Friday.

The Ceres-Negros Selection is headed by its team manager Leo Rey Yanson. Working beside Fegidero are assistant coaches Ramon Janeo, Ronnie Tornilla, Simon Hulleza, Ali Go, Carlo Torbela and Michael Casas.

The staging of PFF-Suzuki U-23 Cup is a partnership of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and Suzuki Philippines to tap the wealth of talented booters in the country.

The top teams that will make it to the finals will clash in a home and away championship match, after which the winner will be crowned as the PFF-Suzuki U-23 Champions.

Moreover, these two top teams will possibly serve as a pool where majority of the players to compose the next "Azkals" will come from and will represent the country in the upcoming 2011 SEAGames in Indonesia.

  2. Well, they still have to face the top 2 winners of Luzon, Mindanao and NCR. They are only on Stage 1 of the Nationals U-23 Cup.
