Cebu U-23 team suffers another loss

AN undermanned Cebu Elite 23-Under Men’s team remained winless after suffering its second straight loss in the Philippine Football Federation-Suzuki Under-23 National Cup yesterday in Dumaguete City.

Following a 2-0 loss to Iloilo the other day, the Cebuanos once again faltered, with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bacolod City, after two of its players Jess Roy Melgo and Edmar Galacio were slapped with red cards in the second half of the elimination match.

“We were beaten by Bacolod. We were down to nine players because two of my players were given red cards,” Cebu Elite 23-Under Men’s team coach Eleazar Toledo told Sun.Star Cebu.

“Bad calls. We can’t do anything about it because the referee’s decision is final. Our chances (of entering the finals) are slim.”

Toledo lauded his team’s performance. He partly blames the loss to the referee’s decision to kick Melgo and Galacio out of the game.

The Cebuanos will miss the services of Melgo and Galacio in the third elimination match against Leyte today at 3 p.m.

Girls team

Cebu’s chance of advancing is bleak because only the top two teams will advance to the finals.

Meanwhile, the Cebu Elite 18-Under Girls team settled for third place in the 1st Gov. Marañon National Selection Tournament last week at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City, after finishing with six points from two wins and two losses.

The Cebuanas beat Zamboanga, 12-0, and Dumaguete, 3-0, but lost to Bacolod City and Iloilo, 3-0 and 6-0, respectively.
