Medellin to host beach soccer

By Edri K. Aznar

SIX teams from Cebu City will be competing in Mayor Rick’s Invitational Beach Soccer this Saturday at the Kawit Beach in Medellin, an activity that will increase the locals’ awareness of the ever-growing sport of football.

University of San Carlos and Saint Theresa’s College will be fielding two teams each along with San Roque FC, Jivas Regal and Cebu State College of Science and Technology in the one-day beach football tournament.

The event is part of the activities in the town’s fiesta and organizers are hoping that it will also help raise awareness for the sport in the town.

“We are still introducing the football program there,” Joel Deen, one of the organizers, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

The tournament, which will start at 8 a.m., will follow a single round-robin format, wherein the top two teams will battle in the championship round.

Aside from the beach football event, Deen also said the Cebu Football Association will be conducting a seminar for school teachers on May 3. Eleazar Toledo of the CFA will head the seminar targeted for elementary and high school students.

The town has also made a push to increase the popularity of the sport as the town’s mayor, Rick Ramirez, has started building full-sized pitches near schools.
