Azkals return to their teams in UFL

The country’s top players return to action for their respective clubs on the third week of action in the United Football League.

Players from Air Force Rider and Army Fritz and Macziol who suited up for the national team against Mongolia in Bacolod last week will be back to power their respective squads when they take on their first division rivals this weekend.

League-leader Kaya welcome back Aly Borromeo and Anton del Rosario as it clashes with Green Archers Orient Freight.

Borromeo skippered the Azkals and along with del Rosario played important roles in shutting out the Mongolians in their AFC Challenge Cup Qualifying duel.

Kaya kicked off its campaign with a 4-2 drubbing of Navy.

Air Force, which has six players in the national squad, opens its title defense against Loyola at 3 p.m. at the Alabang Country Club.

Army, with three players from the Azkals’ fold, battle struggling side Navy FC at the University of Makati at 4 p.m.

Chieffy Caligdong looks to continue his fine form as he leads the Air Force side, which boasts of strong attacking depth.

The fleet-footed Caligdong, a standout from Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, delivered the opening goal for the Azkals in the 2-0 victory against Mongolia.

Ian Araneta who proved influential in attack for the Azkals will also be back for Air Force, together with Yanti Barsales, Joebel Bermejo, Reymark Palmes, Mark Ferrer and Peter Jaugan, who came in as a late substitute against Mongolia.

Air Force will play a Loyola side that won its opening assignment against a battle-weary Navy side, 3-1.

Roel Gener, Nestorio Margarse and goalkeeper Eduard Sacapano will also be back for Army, which was held to a 1-1 draw by Green Archers Orient Freight in its first game.

They are favored to claim their first win against Navy, which has dropped its first two assignments.

Army defeated Navy, 1-0, in its group stage game in the UFL-LBC Cup.

Nomads and Stallions FC hope to keep their records clean as they battle Lions FC and Dolphins FC, respectively, in second division play.

Nomads have been in devastating form, winning the last two games by at least three goals. Steve Borril plundered four goals in a 5-2 win over Japan, before Nomads scored an emphatic 8-2 romp over Sunken Garden Unitted.

Antonio Albor will be a marked man as he has accounted for three of Stallions five goals so far in the tournament.

Albor struck twice in the 3-1 triumph over Union Internacional Manila.

Union will try to bounce back from that defeat against Pasargad which lost via forfeiture to Dolphins FC last week.

Sunken Garden FC hopes to return to its winning ways as it battles Japan FC at the Nomads pitch.
