Unheralded Minuluan-Talisay FC posted a 2-0 upset victory over Ceres Transport as action in the 2009 Villa Valderrama 9-A-Side Football Tournament kicked off yesterday at the Villa Valderrama pitch.
The Mayor Eric Saratan-supported Talisay FC took advantage of a sluggish Ceres Liner side with Norberto Lanusa breaking the ice with a blast in front of the goal's mouth that slipped off the hands of Ceres' keeper while Elmer Rosquillo sealed the win when he struck from in front of the right post.
The tournament, which drew participation from six teams led by defending champion Trimaxi Huminova, opened with simple ceremonies with former University of St. La Salle women's varsity standout Lyka Jochico leading the opening prayer while Dave Javellana led the oath of sportsmanship.
Tournament director and longtime Negrense football patron Ricky Yanson declared the tournament open.
Also present at the opening rites were Philippine Football Federation general secretary Cyril Dofitas and grassroots committee chairman Edward Magallona, who together with Yanson did the traditional ceremonial kickoff to usher in the tournament.
Playing as of press deadline yesterday was Dynamic Builders against Las Buenas FC while reigning champion Trimaxi-Huminova was scheduled to play against Real Negrense FC in the last game.
Both Dofitas and Magallona lauded Yanson for sponsoring the league which they said “is a big boost to football development in this part of the country.”
Matches in this six-team series are scheduled every Sunday and are open to the football community for viewing.*NAB
