Joining the elite list of RP Under-16 football players are four Negrenses who might just get the go-signal to see action in the Asian Under-16 Football Championship Group E Qualifying tournament set Oct. 3-13 at the Panaad Stadium football pitch.
The four Negrense booters are Melecio Manuel Mentor, Sidney Angelo Magbanua and Shane Belera of Victorias City, and Gerald Mark Layumas of San Carlos City. Also in the national pool is Sabin Antonio Bustamante of Oriental, Negros.
Twelve others in the pool are from Iloilo, one from Cebu and seven from various parts of Luzon including Metro Manila.
The inclusion of Negrense players in the pool was confirmed yesterday in a press conference by organizing officials led by local organizing committee chairman Rafael “Junie” Lizares, event coordinator and Philippine Football Federation general secretary Cyril Dofitas, and deputy event coordinator Warren Concepcion at the Luxur Hotel.
Dofitas said the members of the national pool are expected to arrive in Bacolod soon where they will join a training camp with members of the PFF national coaching staff, after which the final composition of the team will be known.
The other national teams seeing action in the Group E qualifying tournament are powerhouse Japan, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, Bangladesh and Mongolia.
The top two teams in this qualifying tournament will advance to the main draw of the Asian championship scheduled next year.
Dofitas is here to also make an ocular inspection of the Paglaum Sports Complex to find out whether the venue is still fit to be tapped as an alternate playing venue for the October games.*NAB
