UAAP Football - FEU dismantles UST’s twice-to-beat edge, wins football crown

Rookie Dexter Chio made up for the absence of Far Eastern University’s (FEU) top striker as the Tamaraws took home the 72nd UAAP men’s football crown, defeating University of Santo Tomas (UST), 1-0, Sunday at the Ateneo field.

Chio, a rookie from Cotabato, scored home the championship-winning goal in the 75th minute, volleying a deflection into the back of the net just outside the penalty box.


FEU played without its top scorer, former national team mainstay Jason Cordova, who served his suspension after getting two yellow cards and an automatic ejection in the first game of the championship.

The Tamaraws also overcame the Tigers’ twice-to-beat advantage entering the finals series.

“This is a great championship for us. Even though we have three players missing, we got the title," said FEU coach Rodolfo Alicante, referring to veterans Jason Almenar and Romnick Jover who were likewise canned after being issued with two yellow cards in the first game.

Cordova scored in the Tamaraws’ 1-0 win over the Tigers Thursday to send the series into a rubber match.

Alicante said the early preparation did wonders for the Tamaraws, who last won the title in 2008, breaking a 28-year-spell.

Jake Hugo led the list of Tamaraws who won individual awards bagging the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors. Cordova won the Best Scorer plum while Francis Gustilo bagged the Best Midfielder trophy. Ronnie Aguisanda won the Best Goalkeeper accolade also for the Tamaraws.

David Basa of UST was adjudged as the season’s Best Defender.

It was truly a redemption for the Tamaraws, who lost last season’s crown to University of the Philippines (UP) despite enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals. -

MANILA, Philippines - Heavy favorite Western Visayas foiled Zamboanga Peninsula’s bid for a Cinderella finish, eking out a 2-1 victory in football action even as National Capital Region kept its dominating performance in the 2010 CHED National Games yesterday.

Joven Bedic delivered the goals – the first in the 35th minute and the other in the 54th – as Region VI, represented by West Negros U, staved off the tough challenge of Dipolog Medical Center College Foundation, a small school near a fishing village in Zamboanga del Norte.

“It was tough. We collapsed in the second half but we hung on to win, which is what mattered,” said Western Visayas coach Norman Fegidero, a former RP team mainstay.



Michael Atienza, a 22-year-old graduating nursing student, gave DMCCF some ray of hope as he rolled in a goal on the 74th minute. He looked headed for another one few plays later only to miscalculate a kick that sailed a few inches out of the left post.

West Negros striker Michael Pacite drew a red card, but Zamboanga failed to take advantage, thus, losing the match in this event backed by Philippine Sports Commission chair Harry Angping, Smart, San Miguel Corp., AMA and STI.

Zamboanga’s British coach Reginald Jukes questioned the penalty shot given Bedic, enabling Western Visayas to draw first blood.

“It wasn’t a penalty. It should have been 0-0 going into the break,” said the 64-year-old Jukes, based in the country for a decade now with his Filipina wife Maria.

“But there’s nothing to be ashamed of. We gave it our all and you saw what happened,” he added.

“We’re just a small school near a fishing village but we came out with a strong effort and nearly won it. This is our best finish in any competition the school participated,” said proud DMCCF owner Albert Concha.

Bacolod Football - EVFC ladies’ provincial league quarter finals

Elimination leader EVFC takes with them their 11-0-1 record towards the quarterfinal round for the 1st EVFC Ladies Invitational Football League on February 27 at Carlos Hilado Memorial State College football pitch.

The top eight teams were divided into two brackets clashing in a single round robin games.


With EVFC in bracket A are No.4 Celta de Victorias (8-1-3), No. 6 San Carlos City FC (7-5-0) and No. 8 Kabankalan City FC (5-5-2) while bracket B composed of No. 2 Domingo Lacson National High School, No. 3 Bacolod City National High School (8-1-3), No.5 EVFC-B (7-4-1) and No.7 Cadiz City FC (5-5-2).

The top two finishers in these brackets advance to the cross-over semis with No. 1 of bracket A playing against No.2 of bracket B while bracket B’s No.1 takes bracket B’s No.2.

The winners of the semifinal round will play for the Championship Match and while the losers play for third place.

CHED NATIONAL GAMES WNU booters clobber Region 4-A

West Negros University football team remains a force to reckon with as the squad blew away CALABARZON, 16-1, yesterday after engaging Davao to a scoreless draw Tuesday at the CHED National Games in Manila yesterday.

Joven Bedic, Ralph Layumas, Vince Braga, each scored three goals while Michael Pacite delivered two markers and one each for Peter Sobredo, Rodolf Bebanco, Jalsor Soriano, Ruffy Llorente and Nathaniel Bublo as the Wesnecans, who are donning the Western Visayas colors, posted their second win in the competition.

Coach Norman Fegidero, said the team looks forward to playing against the National Capital Region, represented by their arc nemesis San Beda, and avenge their last year’s loss in the national PRISAA held in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

But before that, the WNU booters will have to get past Cagayan Valley today in their 9:45 a.m. game scheduled at the ULTRA football pitch.

Sony Ericsson launches search for RP's flag bearer to the 2010 FIFA World Cup

MANILA, Philippines -- Sony Ericsson has opened a video competition that will bring the country’s first FIFA flag bearer to a FIFA World Cup™ match in July.

This is the first time that the country will participate in the global sports event, Sony Ericsson said.
