FOOTBALL is popular in Cebu. This I learned the past 36 hours. When I entered the Cebu City Sports Center last Friday night, hundreds of pairs of spiked shoes and knee-high socks greeted my eyes. Yesterday morning, it was the same soccer-frenzy sight: girls kicking, boys sprinting towards the steel goal, coaches shouting, goalies jumping to stop a score…
The world’s No.1 sport is widespread and celebrated in the Philippines’ No.1 city. Take the 7th Thirsty Football Festival, a smorgasbord of 209 teams and 2,500 participants. All of them Cebuanos? No. Many arrived on our shores coming from Tubigon, Dumaguete, Tanjay, San Carlos, Iligan, Tacloban and Bacolod. Outside Manila, this event is possibly the largest gathering of footballers.

Cebu Football/ Thirsty Cup - SHS-J nabs U14 title; ANS keeps U19 crown
THE Sacred Heart School – Jesuits (SHS-J) returned to the Boys 14 division of the annual Thirsty Football Cup and immediately made an impact as it bagged the title over San Carlos City in the championship match yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Complex football grounds.
SHS-J and San Carlos City were equally matched on both the offensive and defensive end but just as the time was winding down, SHS-J striker Vinson Neri scored from pointblank range from a well-calculated pass by left winger Keef Yap to clinch the game.
“It was a total team effort. Without helping each other, we wouldn’t have achieved this,” SHS-J coach Vincent Ramos told Sun.Star Cebu after their championship victory.
SHS-J edged out Paref-Springdale in the semifinals, 1-0, while visiting San Carlos City defeated defending champion Don Bosco A, 1-0, in penalty shootout.
Meanwhile, the Abellana National School (ANS)-Pomeroy retained its title in the Boys 19 category, while Don Bosco Alumni FC grabbed first runner-up honors.
ANS-Pomeroy also took home the trophy in the Boys 12 division with a 2-1 win over SHS-J.
University of San Carlos won the Girls 19 title, while Atletica de Cebu finished as the first runner-up.
San Carlos City made the trip worthwhile as it bagged the crown in Girls 12 over Subangdaku FC.
Don Bosco 1 also blanked Los Amigos, 2-1, for the Players 8 title.

Benilde booters enhance semis bid
MANILA, Philippines - St. Benilde downed Mapua, 2-0, to firm up its Final Four bid in the 85th NCAA football competition at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City recently.
The win, their fourth straight, came on the heels of the Blazers’ one-sided 12-0 rout of guest team Angeles University Foundation.
The Blazers thus joined the San Beda Lions, the reigning champions, on top while dealing the Cardinals their third defeat against a win.
Perpetual Help, meanwhile, finally picked up its first win after losing its first three games as it trounced AUF, 2-0, in the tournament organized by a league committee chaired by Mike del Mundo of Perpetual Help.

Football stadium to rise over old Rizal track?
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Sports Commission yesterday bared its plan to convert the old track and field oval at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex into a football field even as it signified its intention to tap a private institution to co-finance the project.
“The plan is to turn the Rizal Memorial Track and Field Oval into a football stadium and we’re going to pursue that,” said Philippine Sports Commission chair Harry Angping.
“It’s just matter of having a budget and finding probably a private partner to help co-finance it,” he said.
Angping, in fact, said they might explore the possibility of forging a partnership with La Salle in making the plan for the construction of a state-of-the-art football field, which could also host several international events.

Cebu Football - Aboitiz Cup , 53 rd Army win Men`s Cup and Crazy Horse Men`s League

THE 53rd Army ended its debut in the Aboitiz Football Cup in victory as it upset defending champions University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Alumni in the Men’s Cup championship last Sunday at the Aboitiz Sports field.
The 53rd Army, composed of a mix of enlisted men and non-army personnel, was the underdog in the matchup but managed to pull off an upset 2-1 win.
The team also brought along a band that cheered them on from start to finish.
USJ-R Alumni’s Dave Intong drew first blood with a goal in the 15th minute but Voltaire Montebon quickly tied the game at 1-1 with an answer five minutes after.
Both teams had limited scoring opportunities midway into the game before Eduardo Gempisaw got the go-ahead goal past reserve keeper Tony Caldallero.
Absent
Caldallero stepped in for USJ-R Alumni’s ace goalkeeper Peter Onde, who was absent from the championship match.
USJ-R tried its best to tie the game and force extra time but their harried plays resulted in wasted scoring opportunities.
It’s the second time the 53rd Army won a tournament in Cebu in its first try. It also won the 9th Cebu Amateur Football Club Interclub in its first attempt.
Don Bosco Magone grabbed third place after beating Xantos FC, 1-0.
Men’s League
Eugene Yclino V scored the only goal of the match from a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
Meanwhile, the defending champions Crazy Horse retained its title in the Men’s League after a 1-1 draw with University of the Philippines Foundation (USPF).
Rene Sanchez of USPF hit the net in the 23 minute, while Joshua Fegidero tied the game in the 38th.
Crazy Horse was declared the winner as it topped the league with 17 points, Queen City United finished second with 16 points and USPF was third with 15.
Had USPF won the game, it would have overtaken Crazy Horse by a point and bagged the crown.
