MANILA, Philippines (1st UPDATE) – The Philippine Azkals lost to the Singapore Lions, 2-0, during their friendly match at the Jalan Besar Stadium Friday.
The visiting Azkals managed to hold the Lions goalless in the first half, but were caught flatfooted by their foes' attacks in the second period.
Shaiful Esah of Singapore gave the Lions a 1-0 lead through a deflected long-range strike in the 50th minute of the game.
The hosts' veteran striker Aleksandar Duric, who has scored more than 300 goals in the S.League, increased Singapore's lead in a counterattack blitz goal in the 64th minute.
The Azkals had several chances at the goal in the first half, with Chieffy Caligdong and Phil Younghusband nearly scoring for the Philippine squad.
Caligdong's goal in the 13th minute was disallowed as the winger was offside, while Younghusband’s free kick was just inches from the goal.
Singapore is currently ranked 136th in the world, while the Philippines is rated No. 166.

SINGAPORE—Finally parading a full squad that includes their standouts from Europe, the Philippine Azkals mix it up with Southeast Asian powerhouse Singapore in their first international friendly in more than four years at the Jalan Besar Stadium here.
The Azkals, coming off a runner-up finish in the Long Teng Cup in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, arrived here last night, confident that they can prove that last year’s 1-1 draw against the Singaporeans in the Suzuki Cup in Vietnam was no fluke.
The Singapore friendly is the first of two international matches in five days for the Azkals, who will return to Manila in time for the Oct. 11 showdown with Nepal at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo said just playing a full international friendly match outside the country is already an achievement in itself.
“This is something new for us—traveling outside Manila to play a top team like Singapore,” Borromeo said. “It’s always good for us to play at this level.”
Arriving ahead of the rest of the team, Europe-based players Dennis Cagara, Jerry Lucena, Paul Mulders, Ray Jonnson and Neil Etheridge welcomed their teammates outside the team hotel Thursday night.
“The prospect of playing with the team and some of the new players is exciting,” said Etheridge. “We’re hoping for a good result against Singapore.”
Cagara, the muscular Fil-Danish leftback, will make his Azkals debut in the 7:30 p.m. match against the Lions, who are using the game to prepare for their third round World Cup Qualifying clash against Jordan next week.
Azkals manager Dan Palami already marvels at the prospect of the team playing before a packed stadium after Filipinos here reportedly bought majority of the tickets for the match at the 6,000-seater venue.
“We’re happy that everywhere we go, the support of Filipinos for the team has been tremendous,” said Palami.
Undoubtedly, the squad for the Singapore friendly will be the strongest assembled yet, despite the absence of Stephan Schrock and Anton del Rosario, who are both sidelined by injuries.
“I think we have a stronger team than what we had in the Long Teng Cup and we will be able to test the new players and see what level we are really in,” said Borromeo. “I think this will be the core that we will have for the Suzuki Cup and (AFC) Challenge Cup next year.”
Without Schrock, Azkals coach Michael Weiss plans to pair up Mulders with fellow Fil-Dutch player Jason de Jong at midfield.
Mulders has been vocal of his desire to play as an attacking midfielder – his position with his club ADO Den Haag in the Dutch first division – after being deployed as leftback in the World Cup Qualifiers against Sri Lanka.
“It will be interesting to see Mulders play in his natural position,” Weiss said.
Still feeling pain in his leg, Chieffy Caligdong will be looking to sustain his scintillating form after scoring four goals in the last three matches for the Azkals.
“I’m not 100 percent but I’m ready to play,” the diminutive left winger said.

Getting ready for a AWAY game
Early rumours of ticket sales domination by the Filipinos
A case of hitting the panic button has hit the Singapore football FANS fraternity.
Is it the recent win against Malaysia that hyped up the excitement?
Is it the interest after our announcement to join the Malaysia Cup?
Is it a case of jumping on the bandwagon?
Or is it a case of a better and more successful marketing strategy by the FAS with their better use of facebook as a tool to generate more interest.
Suddenly, people are queuing up for tickets long before matchday!
And when rumours of Filipinos buying their tickets in bulk and FAS' reports of sold out grandstand tickets, fans are a little worried that Jalan Besar will be turned into an away ground this coming Friday.
Well, let this be a wake up call.
Sure, there is the reason of the tickets being sold at noon on a working day. A valid reason for Singapore fans to "complain". But then again, if the away fans can do it, why can't we with our "kiasu DNA" in us do the same?
Sure, away fans should have been given only a limited number of tickets. But with over 150,000 Filipinos working and residing here with definitely a significant group of Permanent Residents, you can't fault them for buying up the tickets also.
But one thing is for sure, this is our test to see whether we can hold our ground at the Lions' den.
So what if there are 4,700 fans in Blue this Friday night chanting the names of the Younghusbands and the Etheridges.
So what?
300 Singaporeans armed with spirit, voice, desire, passion, flags, banners and yes, our favourite loudhailers will stand our ground and make sure that Jalan Besar remains Jalan Besar.
We will make sure that last year's heartbreaking 1-1 draw was nothing but a fluke.
Join up in arms with the LATW Crew as we march down from our favourite meeting place at Lavendar MRT down to the place we all feel at home, Jalan Besar Stadium.
