Arellano ends San Beda’s reign for NCAA Football crow

Arellano U played inspired ball and pulled off a stunning 2-0 victory over league powerhouse San Beda Tuesday to snare its first ever title in the 91st NCAA football tournament at the Rizal Football Field.

Charles Vincent Gamutan and Jumbeng Guinabang delivered the decisive goals as the Chiefs completed their fairy tale run and snared their first football championship since they joined the league six years ago.

The win also ended San Beda’s five-year domination of the sport while finally giving Arellano its first title after two failed attempts in 2012 and 2013 when the latter was denied twice by the former.

“We kept the faith, we always believed we’re capable of doing great things,” said Arellano U coach Ravelo Saluria in Filipino.

Saluria also thanked the school for constructing its own football field complete with athletes’ dormitory in Lagro, Quezon City.

“That was big factor, that football field. It gave us a venue to really train,” said Saluria.

Arellano U thus sealed its second title of the year after also topping men’s chess in the first semester last year.

San Beda, which owns a league-best 22 crowns including the last five, missed the services of striker Connor Tacagni, who was assessed a second yellow card in their 2-1 win over Arellano U last Saturday that forged a one-game title clash, and skipper Matt Asong, who sat out due to injury.

In juniors’ play, St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills came back from 1-3 down in the first half with a strong second half effort to eke out a 5-3 victory and seal the high school championship.

San Beda wins 4th straight NCAA men’s football title

MANILA, Philippines — San Beda seized its fourth straight NCAA men’s football championship after a 2-0 shutout of Arellano Monday at the ASCOM pitch in Taguig.
 
Raffy Cabug, the league’s MVP, fittingly opened up the scoring for the Red Booters in the ninth minute.
 
San Beda, which went unbeaten in nine matches, doubled its lead in the 69th minute on a penalty kick off a costly foul by Arellano keeper Mark Baldo to cap its victory.
 
The Chiefs couldn’t do much with the Red Booters’ stifiling defense. San Beda also came out aggressive that kept Arellano on its heels.
 
With another crown in hand, San Beda tied former NCAA member La Salle for the most number of football titles in the seniors division with 21.
 
Meanwhile, Lyceum edged College of St. Benilde, 1-0, to finish in third place. The Pirates’ finish is their highest since joining the league in 2011.
 
Arellano’s Alvin Obero took home the recognition of being the Top Goalscorer in Season 89 while teammate Pino Cristituto was named Best Midfielder. San Beda’s Jim Ashley Flores bagged the Best Striker award, Lyceum’s Mandie Boy Lunag was the Best Defender and CSB’s Bayan Ronilo was the Best Goalkeeper.

San Beda nails third straight NCAA football title

MANILA, Philippines—San Beda recaptured the NCAA season 88 men’s football title, blanking Arellano, 2-0, Thursday in the ASCOM field in Taguig City.

Miguel Caindec doubled the Red Booters’ lead and put the outcome away from doubt in the 85th minute en route to their third straight title.

Neil Dorimon opened the scoring in the 45th minute for San Beda, which even fell to the tough Chiefs in the round of four.

It was the Red Booters’ 20th overall football title in the league. 

LSGH nails 10th straight NCAA Jr. football title

La Salle Green Hills-College of St. Benilde fashioned out a dramatic 2-0 win over San Beda recently to complete an unprecedented 10 consecutive junior football title in the NCAA Season ’87 at the PhilSports turf in Pasig City.

Rookie Mathew Custodio struck in the 13th minute and Best Striker Anton Celdran doubled the lead for LSGH after a free kick from just outside the box in the 37th.
San Beda came back hard but the Blazers’ defense, built around co-captains Joaquin Atayde and Eugene De Chavez, and Best Defender Julito Asparen and goalkeeper Enrico Barcia frustrated the Red Cubs’ offense.

Team skipper and MVP Jeune Custodio III kept order in the LSGH midfield in the first half until he was carried out on a stretcher with a knee injury after a collision.

The other awardees in the junior division were Ronilio Bayan Jr. of Arellano University (Best Goalkeeper), Roberto Plopinio of SBC (Best Midfielder) and Edienzel Mark Vilizano of Perpetual Help (Best Scorer). The Fair Play Award went to LSGH.

The Red Lions retained their seniors crown after sweeping the first and second rounds.

Lions topple Pirates, keep football lead

Defending champion San Beda College whipped guest squad Lyceum, 3-1, to stay on top even as De La Salle-College of St. Benilde blanked University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 3-0, for its second victory in three games in the eighth NCAA football tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The Pirates actually scored the opening goal courtesy of Raffy Cabog in the 15th minute but were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Jim Ashley Flores tied the match in the 38th minute while Neil Dorimon closed the half with another goal in the 45th minute.

Jay Shaun Soberano secured the win with another goal in the 76th minute as the Red Lions streaked to their fourth consecutive victory.

The Lyceum booters dropped to 1-3-0 (win-loss-draw).

The Blazers, meanwhile, drew two goals from Ralph Lauren Porteria and another from Roald Tamsi to crush the Altas and move to solo third at 2-1-1 behind the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals (3-1-0).

The Altas took their fifth straight loss.

In the juniors side, the Red Cubs blasted the Junior Pirates, 9-0, to grab solo lead with six wins, while defending champion CSB-LSGH Greenies ripped the Altalettes, 7-0, to stay at solo third with a 4-1-0 win-loss-draw mark, behind the second-running Arellano Chiefs (5-1-0).

The Altalettes absorbed their third setback against four wins to remain at fourth.

NCAA - Lions share football lead

Last year’s runner up San Beda downed defending champion St. Benilde, 2-0, to gain a share of the lead in the 86th NCAA football competition at the University of Makati field over the weekend.

Striker Roy Lanting scored on the 63rd minute before Francis Sumudivilla came out of nowhere and knocked in another goal from near midcourt exactly 20 minutes later to clinch the win for the Lions.

San Beda, which bucked the loss of ace striker David Fornea late in the first half, thus drew level with St. Benilde with 12 points but the former gain the solo lead with a win over unpredictable Perpetual Help Altas in their last assignment in the single-round eliminations.

The win also foiled St. Benilde’s sweep bid as the Blazers took their first loss after sweeping their first four matches.

It was also sweet revenge for the Mendiola-based booters, who lost the crown to the Blazers on a 0-1 decision in last year’s finale.

In the other men’s match, Arellano routed Perpetual Help, 13-1, to join idle Emilio Aguinaldo at third spot on 1-1-2 (win-loss-draw) slates.

The Altas fell to 1-0-3.

In junior’s action, CSB and San Beda fought to a scoreless draw while Arellano blasted Perpetual Help, 8-1, to stay in the title hunt.
