Azkals need to overpower Macau Tuesday after draw with Taiwanese

KAOHSIUNG—On the heels of two successive draws, Philippine Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo no longer sees their final match against Macau Tuesday as a mere stepping stone to the Long Teng Cup title.
Having been with the team through difficult times as well as their triumphant moments, Borromeo is still wary of the backlash if the Azkals play below expectations.
“Winning big tomorrow (Tuesday) will sustain the momentum of our run over the past year,” said Borromeo.
The Azkals’ title hopes are no longer in their hands, after a scoreless draw against Chinese Taipei Sunday night, when goalkeeper Roland Muller sparkled with three excellent first-half saves.
If it was any consolation, the Azkals, despite fielding five members of the Under-23 pool, kept up with a Chinese Taipei side that beat Suzuki Cup champion Malaysia, 3-2, two months ago.
“We played with five Under-23 players and I think they acquitted themselves well,” said Palami, who also manages the squad to the Southeast Asian Games next month.
SEA Games pool members Muller, Jeff Christiaens, Neckson Leonora, Matthew Hartmann and Carli de Murga all played against Chinese Taipei.
“They all showed that at this level they can do something. It’s a good sign for the SEA Games,” said Borromeo, who was skipper of the last Philippine football team that saw action in the biennial meet in 2005.
The Azkals need to put at least five goals past Macau Tuesday night at the National Stadium here and hope that Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong play to a draw for the Filipinos to capture the crown.
A win by either Taiwan or Hong Kong will leave the Azkals fighting for second place— that is if they overcome Macau.
“We hope for a draw from both teams which is still possible because I see them at the same level,” said coach Michael Weiss. “As for us, we need to score a lot of goals.”
The Azkals will miss Angel Guirado against Macau, after the Fil-Spanish midfielder was issued a yellow card for the second straight game against Taiwan.
Jason de Jong will also return to the lineup after sitting out the previous game due to suspension, but Chieffy Caligdong remains doubtful because of a bruised leg he sustained against Chinese Taipei.
The Azkals were left wanting in quality on the final third as Phil Younghusband and Christiaens blew clear chances in the second half against Taiwan.
Caligdong, who scored twice in the 3-3 draw against Hong Kong, made way for Christiaens at halftime and the 19-year-old who grew up in Belgium made an impact, linking up with Younghusband to create the Azkals’ best chances.
But the teenager can only shoot wide from just inside the box. In the 75th minute, he also found Younghusband darting into the box, but the Fil-British striker’s left-footed shot was stopped by Pang Wei-chi.
The new-look defensive line of Borromeo, Oliver Poetschke, De Murga and Leonora proved solid in the last 45 minutes, after a nervy first half where they needed Muller to keep the Taiwanese scoreless.
The offside trap was the defensive weapon of choice by the Taiwanese, who forced the Azkals to nine offsides.

Azkals held to another stalemate in Long Teng Cup

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines was held to a stalemate again—this time a scoreless draw versus host Chinese-Taipei Sunday night in the Long Teng Cup.
The Azkals will need a dominating victory over Macau Tuesday as they are now lodged in third place with two points behind leaders Taiwan and defending champion Hong Kong, each with four points points buoyed by separate wins.
It was Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Mueller, debuting for the Azkals in the four-nation tournament, who showcased quality performance as he tirelessly thwarted all the goal attempts of the more aggressive Taiwanese side.
Muller salvaged the Philippines, which allowed the Taiwanese to slip past countless times for a shot on goal, with his timely saves.

LONG TENG CUP: Azkals tackle host Taiwanese Sunday night

KAOHSIUNG—Their goal breached three times Friday, the Philippine Azkals try to address their defensive lapses Sunday night when they tangle with host Chinese Taipei in the Long Teng Cup at the National Stadium here.
Struggling with new combinations, the Azkals settled for a 3-3 draw against defending champion Hong Kong Friday night after erasing a two-goal deficit to seize a 3-2 lead until the 86th minute when the defending champions equalized.
Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo, who played alongside newcomer Oliver Poetschke at central defense, stressed the need for an improved defensive effort from the squad.
“Our defending (against Hong Kong) was all over the place,” said Borromeo.
“But at least there’s familiarity now. We know how we will play together. We can’t let Chinese Taipei get that confidence unlike against Hong Kong.”
Leaving so many gaps at the back and with a passing game that left much to be desired, the Azkals were pinned to the ropes early as Hong Kong struck with two early goals.
Two clinical goals by Chieffy Caligdong after the ice-breaker from the penalty spot by Phil Younghusband in the 31st minute put the Azkals in prime position to pull off the win against a team ranked 10 places higher than them.
Caligdong, despite limping off in the 78th minute after feeling pain on his right knee, said he’ll be ready against the Taiwanese.
“I just needed to rest. As long as I can bear the pain, I’ll always be ready to give my all for the country,” said the 28-year-old Air Force winger.
With only a point to show because of the draw, the Azkals are left with no recourse but to grab maximum points against the hosts, who blanked Macau, 3-0, in their first match Friday night.
“We will be in a very good position to win the tournament if we win tomorrow,” said Azkals coach Michael Weiss.
The German coach hinted at playing a more conservative style against the Taiwanese side, which he said plays a fluid attack.
“We will sit a little a bit deeper (on defense) and will be looking for counter-attacks,” Weiss said. “I hope everybody steps up, especially in terms of alertness and concentration.”
Team manager Dan Palami said settling down defensively early on will be key for the Azkals.
“Even with the unfamiliarity of the players, playing compact 4-4-2 will allow us to be more confident because everybody knows that basic defensive structure,” said Palami.
Changes are expected in the starting roster for the Azkals with Jason de Jong sitting out the match after getting sent off in injury time against Hong Kong.
Goalkeeper Roland Muller, who made a string of fine saves against Hong Kong, is expected to keep his spot in the starting XI just like Caligdong, Borromeo, Phil and James Younghusband, Carli de Murga and Angel Guirado.

SOMEBODY pointed out an intriguing point regarding the Azkals friendlies against Singapore, Nepal and the Long Teng Cup campaign in the next couple of weeks.
We basically have two different squads—one for the friendlies and one for the Taiwan campaign—where the Azkals finished third of four teams last year.
The point basically is, coach Michael Weiss must deliver in Taiwan and must bring home the Cup.
Win against Singapore and Nepal, when we have a fully-loaded lineup and lose in Taiwan? What will folks think?
“They might think that we don’t need a good coach, we just need a good team.”
Hmmm. Interesting.
But, I have to disagree on this one.
No matter who we field, we need a good coach because, for me, being great at coaching isn’t only about how good you are at tactics, substitutions or knowing who to put in the lineup.
No matter who we field, we still need a good coach, one who’ll break egos, or who’d insist that players show up for practice, not for photo-shoots and stuffs like that.
Yes, coach Weiss could face the pressure if the “weak” team loses in Taiwan and the strong team wins against Singapore and Nepal.
But what happens if it’s the other way around?
Yikes!!!
The team left for Taiwan yesterday for the Long Teng Cup, and I hope they do well. Because to be honest, this is the only tournament where the Azkals have the greatest chance of bringing home the bacon.
Sure, compared to the SEA Games,on the Suzuki Cup, the Long Teng Cup isn’t much but considering how most of the players who scored the breakthrough in Vietnam last year used the Taiwan tournament as a springboard, it would be great to know how the Azkals will fare in the event.
By the way, I can now officially congratulate Graeme Mackinnon for being named the new head coach of Global FC, which comes exactly two months after I heard Dan Palami offer the job to him.
And Coach Graeme’s first game? It will be against Cebu.
Dan said for the Global vs. Cebu Queen City United game, he can count on at least one Cebuano fan in Doc Joel (Paolo Pascual’s dad) but with Graeme on board, Dan can count on two Cebuano families’ support.
But one good thing about Dan, Graeme, Mario and Joel? The Global vs. Cebu game will be great, but I’m sure we’re going to have a greater time talking about it over beer—and mango juice for teetotaler Graeme.

SOMEBODY pointed out an intriguing point regarding the Azkals friendlies against Singapore, Nepal and the Long Teng Cup campaign in the next couple of weeks.
We basically have two different squads—one for the friendlies and one for the Taiwan campaign—where the Azkals finished third of four teams last year.
The point basically is, coach Michael Weiss must deliver in Taiwan and must bring home the Cup.
Win against Singapore and Nepal, when we have a fully-loaded lineup and lose in Taiwan? What will folks think?
“They might think that we don’t need a good coach, we just need a good team.”
Hmmm. Interesting.
But, I have to disagree on this one.
No matter who we field, we need a good coach because, for me, being great at coaching isn’t only about how good you are at tactics, substitutions or knowing who to put in the lineup.
No matter who we field, we still need a good coach, one who’ll break egos, or who’d insist that players show up for practice, not for photo-shoots and stuffs like that.
Yes, coach Weiss could face the pressure if the “weak” team loses in Taiwan and the strong team wins against Singapore and Nepal.
But what happens if it’s the other way around?
Yikes!!!
The team left for Taiwan yesterday for the Long Teng Cup, and I hope they do well. Because to be honest, this is the only tournament where the Azkals have the greatest chance of bringing home the bacon.
Sure, compared to the SEA Games,on the Suzuki Cup, the Long Teng Cup isn’t much but considering how most of the players who scored the breakthrough in Vietnam last year used the Taiwan tournament as a springboard, it would be great to know how the Azkals will fare in the event.
By the way, I can now officially congratulate Graeme Mackinnon for being named the new head coach of Global FC, which comes exactly two months after I heard Dan Palami offer the job to him.
And Coach Graeme’s first game? It will be against Cebu.
Dan said for the Global vs. Cebu Queen City United game, he can count on at least one Cebuano fan in Doc Joel (Paolo Pascual’s dad) but with Graeme on board, Dan can count on two Cebuano families’ support.
But one good thing about Dan, Graeme, Mario and Joel? The Global vs. Cebu game will be great, but I’m sure we’re going to have a greater time talking about it over beer—and mango juice for teetotaler Graeme.

Azkals leave for Long Teng Cup
THE Philippine Azkals will leave for Kaoshiung, Taiwan today to start their bid in the Long Teng Cup, a four-nation tournament against Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau, which will start today until Oct. 4.
As a more experienced Philippine squad is being sent this year compared to last year’s, the team will try to improve its third place finish.
Last time around, the squad finished with one win, one draw and one loss. This year, they hope to finally win the title.
The national pool will rely on the leadership of skipper Aly Borromeo with vice captain Emelio Caligdong and other senior players like Phil and James Younghusband, Ian Araneta, Angel Guirado, Roel Gener, Misagh Bahadoran, Jason de Jong and Eduard Sacapano.
There are new faces in the mixed lineup of veterans and youth players released by coach Michael Weiss, including the members of the Under-23 team, which is bound for the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia in November.
Leading the overseas players in the Under-23 training pool is Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Mueller from MSV Duisburg, Fil-Spanish defender Carlos de Murga from Club Portuense and Fil-Belgian Midfielder Jeffrey Christiaens from Torhout KM.
The other Under-23 local players listed are Lemuel Unabia from Negros-Ceres, Reymark Fernandez, Nickson Leonora and Fil-British siblings Mark and Matthew Hartmann, who are both playing for Loyola Meralco Sparks FC.
Kaya FC midfielder Moy Lexton and Oliver Potschke of BFC Preussen Berlin completed the national side lineup.
The Azkals will face the defending champions national team of Hong Kong on their first game on Sept. 30 and they will take on Chinese Taipei on Oct. 2 and last year’s lowest-ranked team Macau on Oct. 4.
They have a scheduled friendly match in Singapore on Oct. 7 before heading home to host an international match against Nepal on Oct. 11 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

New-look Azkals join Taiwan meet
THE Philippine Azkals will unveil a new lineup when they see action in the four-nation Long Teng Cup, set in Taiwan from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4.
New players in the team are Fil-American Lexter Moy, Filipino-British Mark Hartmann, Fil-Belgian Jeff Christiaens, Fil-Spanish Carli de Murga and Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Muller, together with local defenders Lemuel Unabia, Reymark Fernandez and Nickson Leonora.
“It’s an honor to come here and have this great opportunity to learn my Filipino side and be able to play soccer here,” said the 26-year-old Lexter Moy, a defensive midfielder, who was born and raised in New York.
Moy was among the members of the national team who showed up during the first Kia Cup 7-a-side tournament at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa.
The 5’8” Moy, who was also given a chance to play for the Kaya Football Club in the United Football League, later joined the Azkals in the clinics held in the afternoon.
Moy, whose father is a US Marine, who met his mother in Olongapo in the 1980s, used to play for a second division team, Taichung, in Hong Kong from 2009 to 2010.
Other teams taking part in the Long Teng Cup are host Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau.
The Azkals will miss Fil-German booter Stephan Schrock and Fil-British goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who won’t be available due to club commitments.
Azkals regulars Aly Borromeo and Chieffy Caligdong will still be around, along with brothers Phil and James Younghusband, Angel Guirado, Jason de Jong, Misagh Bahadoran, Roel Gener, Ian Araneta,Eduard Sacapano and the returning Matthew Hartmann. Peter Atencio
