BOCAUE – It may have looked like a risk to some, but for Philippine coach Thomas Dooley, putting Marco Casambre as the starting center back for the Azkals in their all-important match against Thailand in the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup on Friday was just the right move.
Dooley said he was impressed with what he saw from Casambre in practice, leading him to give the young gun the starting job.
“Marco showed in training that he’s awake, and he’s there. He has a good left foot, makes less mistakes passing out of the back, he’s good in the air. He fought against everybody and I thought I had to give him a chance to play against them,” he said.
“That’s why I made the decision to make him our center back and play next to Amani (Aguinaldo), two young players. Jeffrey (Christiaens) could play in the outside, maybe get a little bit more involved in the offense.”
The 17-year-old Casambre had his baptism of fire for the national team on Friday, but held his own in the backline against the tough War Elephants.
Dooley shared it was also a part of his game plan to take advantage of Thailand resting most of its starters and utilizing its second team.
“We needed to have a little bit more speed in the center, especially for counters. That’s why I took Marco and Jeffrey in, and have little more experienced players like Kevin (Ingreso) should be good enough for the last 20 minutes. That was the idea,” he said.
Casambre did a good account of himself before subbing out at the 79th minute in lieu of Kevin Ingreso.
Unfortunately, the Philippines lost to Thailand, 1-0, bowing out of the biennial meet after finishing with only two points.
Still, it was a promising run for the University of the Philippines defender, earning praise from no less than Dooley himself.
“We could have been 1-0 before (Thailand) scored, but it didn’t happen. I was pleased with the way Marco played,” he said.

Hahahaha!
ReplyDeleteKawawang Ingreso nilagay sa maling position. Hay buhay.
ReplyDeleteI applaud Dooley during that time when he trusted a local homegrown player into a crucial 'Win or Go Home Game' bot to mention he's only 17 going 18 yrs old (born 1998) but if he really had a longer plan about Casambre then the kid should be given playing time in the National team months prior to playing in the Suzuki Cup. Not just suddenly you put him in there without experience and that is a decision that coaches can be fired due to no long term preparation. To make matters worst upon subbing off Casambre for a midfielder Ingreso the opponents scored the only goal of the game because Ingreso forget to know his place that he's main job is a defender first. Dooley's forwards didn't click translating into a disaster gameplan for him. WHy he fails to prepare our Azkals for two years? In this biggest football event in South East Asian region puzzled me. Maybe they rely so much on foreign based players and that was their only option without a back up one. Now I know many of us fans and football coaches want Dooley out as well as the managerial position of Dan Palami. We are thankful for him as he brought the renaissance in football wayback 2010 but that was 6 years ago and we can't dwell to our past for so long, we have to move on as this world is in a constant change.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about you guys, but I'm a bit bummed out. Even now. I never expected us to win against Thailand in the first place. But when it finally happened, it still feels unreal. Like reality has an alternate version, or something like that. It's hard when you're invested emotionally in a team. And I'm just a fan. I wonder how the players feel. What's the best way to console ourselves here?
ReplyDeleteOur players are much better looking than theirs?
DeleteHaha.
If you gave all your effort and you still lost that is very painful for a player pero iba pinakita nila andali nila makamove on at makashake hands kaagad sa mga Thais.
DeleteIt gets frustrating for the players when your out of position although there are some players willing to adapt but Dooley should have a preparation for this in two years sfter having a plan that he needs players to play in different roles due to limited access to foreign pinoys under contract with different clubs in europe and in Asia. For me Dooley is a novice coach and should be fired. He's a failure in the praparation of Suzuki Cup and how much more when joining the most big one the AFC Asian Cup Qualifier? More bigger teams than Thailand will be playing against us and then let players play again in out of position roles? always relying on defenders based outside the Philippines when in fact we can pick one here and expose them in friendlies before playing in the bigeger stage or maybe he will experiment again ? Palami should step down and give it to more knowledgeable managers who's waiting there.
Delete1. lower your expectations next time - we're making huge strides but take note all our neighbors have been playing high-level (relatively compared to us) football for decades.
ReplyDelete2. don't believe too much on the fifa coca-cola world rankings
3. continue watching the game and play the game if possible. :)
There will be next time.People 4get we are still developing football nation.Wag mainip dadating din ang asean title maybe 2 to 5 yrs or 10 yrs more pa. 2 pa lang ang native at homegrown na locally trained cla aguinalado & casambre hindi natin prime nla sa mga susunod na taon.
ReplyDeletePaano makuamit natin in 5 yrs eh wla nga specific program ang PFF sa Youth national team or a new modern facility na pwede i house at i train mga bata natin. Everything for them is a shortcut kaya patuloy sila sa pagkuha ng mga talent overseas pero wlang shortcut to success.
