The Cebu Football Association (CFA)-Cebu Queen City United (CQCU) advanced to the second round after topping the Group E eliminations of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart National Club Championship with an 8-1 rout of Northern Samar’s Hijos FC yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
CFA-CQCU’s scoring spree was started by Siegfred Apurado in the 15th minute when he headed the ball following a goalmouth scramble that had the ball hitting the post before going his way.
The Hijos FC had a chance to score the equalizer in the 27th minute with CFA-CQCU’s goalkeeper Charles Villarta leaving his post. Fortunately, the ball rolled just bit wide to the side.
However, another goalmouth scramble in the 35th minute, this time, went in favor of the visiting team with Eugene Hilton Cablay leveling the match at 1-all.
With barely three minutes left in the first half, Pintho Kabulo made it 2-1 for the hometeam when he fearlessly engaged and beat Hijos FC’s goalie in a one-on-one.
Ariel Cahilig further put CFA-CQCU out of reach at 3-1 when he made his contribution within the added time.
The second half was pretty much an all CFA-CQCU show with Junard Aguilar scoring his back-to-back goals in the 49th and 60th minutes.
CFA-CQCU head coach Mario Ceniza made the right decision of replacing Cahilig with Jade Paghubasan as the booter wasted no time in finding the back of the net in the 65th minute for a 6-1 lead.
Some 10 minutes later, CFA-CQCU erected a formidable 7-1 lead over the Hijos FC via Ahmed Cheick Camara.
Paghubasan then wrapped up CFA-CQCU’s win with his goal in the 81st minute.
The regional cluster eliminations for this third edition of the tournament started last Oct. 2 wherein 10 teams are expected to advance to the second round of eliminations. From there, the top two teams will contest the title in two legs to be played in a home-and-away format.
The first edition was won by Global Teknika and the second was won by Ceres FC.
