Araneta gets fresh 4-year mandate as PFF president

MANILA, Philippines—Mariano “Nonong” Araneta Saturday got a fresh mandate to lead Philippine football for the next four years during the annual PFF Congress in Mandaluyong.

Representatives of 32 football associations from all over the country voted for the former national team captain in a united front witnessed by several officials of the International Football Federation and the Asian Football Confederation.

Araneta, who served the remainder of ousted president Mari Martinez’s term starting late last year, Saturday vowed to prioritize the implementation of grassroots programs, give more exposure to the national team and organize more tournaments, especially at the youth level.

Grassroots

“We will prioritize grassroots, the national teams and of course to the women’s team because they have shown tremendous effort and improvement,” Araneta said.

“The popularity of the sport has grown tremendously over the past year. I think in general, people involved in Philippine football have done a good job,” he said.

Araneta said the PFF will be partnering with the AFC, the Japan Football Association and the German Football Federation in the implementation of the grassroots program that will be launched early next year.

AFC acting president Zhang Jilong attended the Congress and Araneta said he was assured of the smooth release of funds intended for the PFF and its development programs.

“He (Zhang) promised to facilitate the release for developing countries like the Philippines so that nobody will be controlling funds,” he said, noting that the AFC president immediately ordered the release of the remaining $130,000 for the PFF intended for the Aid 27 Program for coaches.

Transparency

Araneta said transparency remains an important thrust of his federation, which receives $250,000 from Fifa every year and $200,000 from AFC.

AFC vice-president Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan has also promised to help the PFF’s grassroots program with equipment and logistical needs and Araneta said this will allow the federation to realign some funds for other projects.

Araneta is still hoping that the DFB will finalize the grant for the country that will pave the way for a German technical expert to work on grassroots development in the country.

Another project of Araneta is the staging of regional Under-17 and Under-15 tournaments.

Elected to the PFF Board were Charlie Cojuangco, Dick Emperado, Richard Montayre and Dan Palami for Visayas, Ronald Tulay, Diobe Arellano, Leopoldo Arnaiz and Mario Garovillo for Luzon and Ramon Manlunas, Cabili Sinsuat, Flaviano Fucoy and Abenir Labja for Mindanao.

  1. Isn't that nice? Everything signed, sealed and dusted without the most important part of PH fooball - the fans - not even knowing what happened. Any chance of a livestream video?

  2. Priority: Grassroots Development? Too many grasses really. Too many. IMHO. The PFF should give more priority to higher age groups who seem to lack the needed help from the federation.

  3. rhetorics. all words. none of the money fm fifa or afc went to any grassroot program this year. even the coming years, none of these $ asistance will ever be used for anything football good. its the same fucking story. would be nice to rave like this on a PFF website, yah il give em my transparency.

  4. FIFA/AFC/SEA etc football websites list PFF's official website as THE-PFF.COM. Try it and understand why the rest of the world has to treat your country as a joke.

  5. Where is the artificial turf project (Goal 1 & 2). We badly needed that. Our football fields are really bad that it also dictates the type of football we are playing (long balls).

  6. Congratulations to the elected officials of the Philippine Football Federation

  7. don't you think the presidency of Mr. Araneta is way way much better than the previous ... Give the elected officials a chance to prove themselves. Even the four years reign and budget is not enough to develop all sectors , but with all the support and cooperation from other countries , FIFA / AFC , sponsors and all the football clubs and committees i do hope it will be the start of THE REAL development. We should work hand in hand to make it work for the better .
This is a totally different ballgame , media is on our side , our voices can be heard , other countries are on close scrutiny of football growth not for the chosen few but to all sectors. Transparency is a must , corruption ??? Yare tayo diyan!!! may na oust na dahil diyan ... di ba mga pare.

  9. The fans are not the most important part of the PFF. The players are. Fans are nice to have but getting fields, equipment, coaching, and young children to play the sport is far more important then who shows up to watch. The national teams are not the main priority of the PFF. The main priority is to build up football to have millions of players. Once that is done, fans will come to watch.

  10. "The national teams are not the main priority of the PFF"

seriously? this is interesting. is that what's happening right now? that's right: REVENUES. oh yeah, about how much ang kikitain ngayon sa mala-ulap na presyo ng LA Galaxy na laro? ah, siya nga gagamitin ang kita para sa pag build up ng football. right. that's right, build up football by recruitng cute looking Filipinos from abroad so that The fans would come. Let the girls and the madlang bayan have a go at them with their shirts off.

the NATIONAL Team should be THE priority! The steak, and everything else just gravy. The national team is the main artery where fresh new talents from the very heart if the people passes through. the national team is grassroots, period.

  11. This new administration should be much better than the previous two. Lets just get involved if you really love the game. There are many ways for one to help promote the sport other than watching games on TV and yapyapping here.

  12. We would take that as in football will be competetive against mexico coz we have rivalry

  13. my yapyapping here will be my involvement along with the thousands yapyappers who will be anxious with guarded optimism in contrasting this administration with the previous ones. if you've been living here long enough you'll understand how stories like these ends.

  15. Mr. Araneta took over the presidency after the oust of Mr. Martinez , and from that time on so many things had happened and we are all a witness to it. The priority of the then and now president is to be careful in the disbursal of the funds. Ang alam ko negative ang PFF noon, paying off almost all the debts of previous PFF management, and now revenue and profit is making the PFF stand again as an entity that can support the Future of Football Growth. There is no mystery in the PFF , ang misteryoso sa akin ay ang mga tao na walang ginagawa para i-promote ang football and yet has the audacity of being pessimistic and sarcastic on something yet to be seen and yet to be done. Huwag mong unahan , isa isa lang , or better yet baka may kilala ka to do the website for them , i-recommend mo makakatulong ka pa.sa website lang ba makikita ang "Transparency" ng isang Entity, at kung malaman mo how much the PFF is getting , masaya ka na o baka manigas sa inggit. Pera at Pondo yon ng PFF , they will put it in good use , and with Mr.Araneta's presidency , i think it is in good hands.

Oh fuck off you goody-goody!! So everyone is all of a sudden obligated to literally do something to further the sport? And if we don't we don't have a right to an opinion especially if its supposedly pessimistic?! lol! Get a grip!!

  17. " Ang alam ko negative ang PFF noon, paying off almost all the debts of previous PFF management...."

Okay. This is reminiscent of governments in our country past and present. It's the "blame-the-previous-government" card. You must be the "transparency" representative for Araneta, aren't you? You sound more like Khaddafi's aide to me. If the current PFF had the best intentions, real transparency should have been drawn out from the start. That guy that said something about webpage here makes a lot of sense. It's a simple official web site. If they can't do that, do we expect them to have the "audacity" like you said (u have a colkege degree?) to be able to turn things around.

It was our apathy in the past that made PFF get away with things, but that's not gonna happen these days. HELL YES, we are gonna make a lot of noise this time. We are going to keep the people entrusted with lots of money for OUR football on their toes. That's right, brother, Internet multimedia, it's a great invention. They must be hold accountable for every thing they do. People are watching.

prove it! what has the PFF done in the past year that can argue that they are transparent?

    ReplyDelete
  19. what has PFF done for the last 20 years , compared to the past 1 year ha. Give them the chance to prove themselves for the next 4 years, this cannot be done overnight. If football does not grow from here and now , i will be with you to make lots of noise and be a nuisance at that, fair enough?.

  20. Y year minus 1. they have 3 yrs. i have all the time. our youth system and national team is all that matter. let you and i hope Araneta is still healthy and not senile yet around Y year.
