MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Azkals will hold another friendly match on Jan. 21 when they battle a club team from Incheon, South Korea at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Organized by Dragon Promotions, which has staged pool events in the country, the match will benefit those who were affected by Typhoon Sendong.
It is however unknown if which team from Incheon will play the Azkals in this friendly that is part of the latter's preparations for the AFC Challenge Cup in Katmandu, Nepal.
Two pro clubs located in the area are the Incheon United FC of the K-League, the top-tier football league in the country, while the other is Incheon Korail FC of the Korea National League.
Incheon United finished 13th in the 16-league K-League during the recent 2011 season while Incheon Korail made the playoffs of the 2011 Korea National League.
Before the Koreans tangle with the Azkals, a series of friendly matches will kick off the hectic football schedule, starting with this Saturday’s goodwill game between the Azkals and the FC Internacional de Madrid at the Rizal pitch.
The Spanish club will also test the mettle of recently-crowned AFL champion Air Force on Tuesday.
The Spanish club will be brought here by Bob Bayona and his British partner Stephen Newman, a long-time Philippine resident married to a Filipino.
Proceeds will likewise go to the victims of Typhoon Sendong.
Newman said it would be the first time that a squad from Madrid is coming to the country to strut its stuff, making the event a must-see for football aficionados.
Less than a week after the Spaniards’ visit, it will be the turn of the Germans to showcase their wares as a prelude to the 31st anniversary of the Philippine-German month.
Azkals coach Michael Weiss will officiate the game that is organized by the German Club of Manila, Hanns Seidel Foundation, the German Embassy and the Office of the Solicitor General.
The Cranes is composed of Germans living in Manila.
German Club president Michael Scheile said bringing the team to Bilibid is their way of showing support to the rehabilitation program for inmates under the promotion of the Solicitor General’s office which is similar to the programs in Germany.
