REGIONAL director Recaredo Borgonia of the Department of Education in Central Visayas (DepEd-7) said it is premature to say that players who are meted suspensions by the Cebu Football Association (CFA) will not be able to compete in the Cebu City Olympics and the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet.
Borgonia refused to issue a statement except to say that “The CFA is not the DepEd and the DepEd is not the CFA.”
CFA president Richard Montayre and Borgonia confirmed that the football events of this year's City Olympics and the CVIRAA meet will be sanctioned by the CFA.
According to Borgonia, they have yet to find out whether these players deserved the punishment. To do that, they have to look into all angles of the issue.
Ricky Ballesteros, the newly appointed chairman of the DepEd Sports Committee Cebu City Division, said he was surprised with the development.
He said this is the first time he heard of a local sporting association sanctioning one of the events of a multi-level scholastic athletic competition conducted by the DepEd.
Ballesteros said that they have not received any communication informing them of the tie-up between the CFA and the DepEd.
“Our aim is to send the best athletes in regional and national competitions. If that is the case, then we would also conduct our own investigation,” said Ballesteros adding “there should be an independent investigative body, not just members of the CFA.”
He said CFA cannot insist of implementing their decision because they are not part of the CFA nor is the City Olympics and the CVIRAA solely organized by the CFA.
