THE University of Cebu escaped (UC) with a 1-0 win over former champion University of the Visayas (UV) in their closely contested season opener of the collegiate division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football tournament last Sunday at the University of San Carlos-Technology Center football pitch.
After a listless first half, Clarence Rosco did just enough to lift his team to victory after scoring the only goal of the match in the 50th minute.
UV had most of the ball possession but the squad was inaccurate with its shots. UV had 19 shots, but only nine were on target.
UC, on the other hand, was more accurate and had seven attempts with five on target.
UC is at second place behind USC, which beat the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 3-0, also last Sunday.
Both teams have three points on one win but USC leads with three goals to UC’s one.
Marvin Torepalma won’t suit up for UC in its next game on Sept. 19 because he was slapped with a red card in the 71st minute.
The high school division resumes this Saturday with the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) taking on USPF at 1 p.m. followed by a match between the defending champions Don Bosco Technology Center and USC.
USC will face UV next in the collegiate division, while defending champion USJ-R is up against the rugged USPF squad this Sunday.
