Ateneo sets up finals showdown vs La Salle in UAAP football finals

MANILA, Philippines–Ateneo set up a finals showdown against rival La Salle after ousting Far Eastern U, 1-0, in the UAAP Season 81 men’s football tournament Thursday.

Powered by Jarvey Gayoso’s phenomenal goal in the 70th minute, the Blue Eagles arranged a knockout final match with the Green Archers in a first since their meeting for the title in 2006.

Earlier, La Salle edged University of the Philippines, 2-1, to book the first finals berth.

They meet next Thursday at 4:30 p.m., still at Rizal Memorial Football stadium.

Philippines Girls Under-15 Team In AFF U15 Girls’ Championship

 The Philippine Girls Under-15 National Team will compete in the upcoming AFF U15 Girls’ Championship to be held in Chonburi, Thailand from 09-21 May 2019.

The Philippines will face Vietnam, Myanmar, and Timor Leste in Group A.

Rachelle “Ching” delos Reyes is the head coach of the team. She will be assisted by Rose Bariñan and Glaiza Artus.

“From the girls selected for the national team, we know that they are deserving to be part of the national team,” said delos Reyes. “Though they may come from all over the country, they were able to unite as one team.”

“It is a great opportunity to be the coach of the national team,” added delos Reyes. “Each tournament is a challenge. We hope that whatever this team has achieved in the past, we could better it.”

“We wish Coach Ching delos Reyes and the Philippine Girls Under-15 National Team all the best in the upcoming AFF U15 Girls’ Championship,” said PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “The team is the new crop of players that hopefully form the next generation of our Women’s national team players in the future.”

23 players form the final line up for the tournament. Seven players were part of the Philippines Girls Under-16 team that participated in last year’s AFF U16 Girls’ Championship and the AFC U16 Women’s Championship 2019. Players were selected initially from the PFF Regional Festival of Football, and the regional player inspection.

The team conducted their training camp at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite and had friendly scrimmages with school-based and club teams in preparation for the tournament.

The team left for Thailand this Tuesday, 7 May 2019.

Dissatisfied football body puts end to PPL

The Philippine Football Federation on Saturday terminated Triple CH Holdings as operator of the Philippine Premier League, which kicked off last week with only five clubs—two of which did not even have a license from the federation.

The decision was unanimously approved by the Board of Governors, led by PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta, who had earlier given the PPL his backing only to pull it out after what a source described as “serious mismanagement” on the part of PPL organizers.

The PFF said the league will revert back to its original name, the Philippines Football League with kickoff expected in the third week of May.

A highly-placed source said the federation was far from satisfied at the way the competition is being managed, citing several issues from the PPL’s inability to secure a title sponsor to the league’s defiance on allowing clubs without licenses—Mendiola and Air Force—to see action last week.

Stallion Laguna and Global Makati pulled out a day before kickoff.

PFF cuts ties with PPL, announces national league reboot

After all the drama and controversy, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), the governing body of the sport in the country, terminated its agreement with national league operator Philippine Premier League (PPL) with immediate effect on Friday.

According to the PFF statement, PPL management and licensed clubs have been informed of the federation's decision.

The PPF also announced the return of the Philippines Football League (PFL), the previous iteration of the national league, to ensure that the 2019 domestic season is played. The season is set to kick off this month.

The national federation added that further information, such as tournament regulations, will be released at a later date.

"PFF is taking steps to ensure the continuation of the 2019 national league season," the statement read. "A meeting with the clubs, including those which have earlier withdrawn their participation from Philippine Premier League (Stallion Laguna FC, Global Cebu FC, and Ceres Negros FC) has already been scheduled."

The PPL was a reboot of the PFL, after its two-year run ended when numerous clubs folded midway through the season. The controversial league was unveiled last January with the backing of the PFF.

The national federation awarded the right to operate the national league to PPL management headed by its commissioner Bernie Sumayao. The PPL hit a snag after it was revealed that several participating teams were denied their club licenses by the national federation, forcing it to move its opening day from March 30 to April 27.

Licensed clubs Global Makati and Stallion Laguna compounded the PPL's woes with a public withdrawal of participation and a scathing critique of the league management.

The PPL played one matchday on April 27 before the PFF decided to pull the plug on their partnership.

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has terminated on 03 May 2019 its agreement with league operator, Triple CH Holdings Co. Ltd. with immediate effect.

The decision carries full approval from the PFF Board of Governors led by its president Mariano Araneta, Jr.

PFF has notified Triple CH Holdings Co. Ltd., its chairman Bernard Sumayao, and the current five (5) licensed clubs, namely Ceres Negros FC, Kaya FC-Iloilo, Stallion Laguna FC, Global Cebu FC, and Green Archers United FC, about the PFF decision.

PFF is taking steps to ensure the continuation of the 2019 national league season. A meeting with the clubs, including those which have earlier withdrawn their participation from Philippine Premier League (Stallion Laguna FC, Global Cebu FC, and Ceres Negros FC) had already been scheduled.

Bienvenido Marañon believes that success did not come to Ceres-Negros overnight in the AFC Cup. The Philippine champions currently have an unblemished record with five victories in the group stage which brought them to their fourth consecutive appearance in the knock out stages.

“When you train hard, good things happen,” said the current AFC Cup top scorer who scored a hat trick in the last match to clinch his ninth in the competition. “I’m very happy to score three goals and I’m very happy for the team. We qualified already.”

Ceres-Negros have been drawn into the zones’ group of death with the likes of Becamex Bin Duong, Persija Jakarta, and Shan United and have surprised the ASEAN football community by winning all of their games so far.

“To play here (in Myanmar) is not easy, same with Persija Jakarta and Becamex. For me, our group is the most difficult group so I think our results are great especially after playing against these good teams,” the Spaniard added.

With the semifinal matchups to be decided on the final day, there isn’t much that can be done to fully prepare the Busmen. For now, Marañon and company will have to stick to their tried and tested methods for them to reach the next big stage in the competition.
