Iain Ramsay signs for Iranian club

Azkals Fil-Australian Iain Ramsay has been on a week trial with Australian club Newcastle Jets, but left Monday to "pursue a offer in Iran" reported a local Australian newspaper.

Iranian sources reporting that he has signed for Tractor Sazi Fc.

CERES-La Salle shut out Kaya FC, 2-0, in a grinding battle on Sunday night to move on the cusp of the United Football League crown at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The reigning Division 2 champions turned to Spanish sensations Bienvenido Marañon and Adrian Gallardo to score the hard-earned victory in a physical skirmish that saw 10 yellow cards handed out.

Ceres notched its 12th victory in 14 matches and hiked its total to 37 points, needing only a draw in its last three matches to secure the crown and an outright berth to the Asian Football Confederation Cup next year, right in its inaugural season in the top flight.

The Bacolod representative is nine points clear of second-running Global FC, whose title-retention bid suffered a major setback after settling for a 2-2 draw with Socceroo on Saturday.

Marañon unlocked the Kaya defense six minutes before first-half stoppage time when the Spanish winger scored off a Martin Steuble feed.

Gallardo doubled the lead in the 58th minute, finishing off Manny Ott’s assist to sustain his status as the league’s top scorer with 18 goals.

Pachanga Diliman rolled past Socceroo with a similar 2-0 decision in a battle of cellar-dwellers.

Hamed Hajimehdi and Stephen Permanes emerged the goalscorers for eighth-running Pachaga, which scored only its 11th point this season, while leaving its victim stuck with only four points to show.

Makati Football Club rules Cup No. 1 International tilt by besting tough field in Denmark

THE Makati Football Club (MFC) Boys 11 bested a tough field, including a fancied Norwegian club in the finals, 6-1, to rule the Cup No. 1 International Tournament in Frederikshavn, Denmark recently.

The MFC booters arranged the championship showdown against the Norwegians after blasting Moldovia from Romania in the semifinals, 4-1.

They earlier won four of their games in the elims against Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Germany, while losing one against Cantolao from Peru, considered as one of the top youth clubs in the world.

MFC then sustained its top form in the quarterfinals of the event featuring over 200 teams from 21 countries by routing Algeria, 6-0, to advance in the semis of the annual Scandinavian tournament.

Composed of boys and girls aged 11-18, the MFC delegation was also invited to train at the Real Madrid summer training camp in Valdebebas Madrid, Spain, the official training ground of the world famous club, including La Liga First Division players Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

The victory should augurs well for MFC’s buildup for the 33rd Gothia Cup slated next week in Goteborg, Sweden.

Regarded as the World Youth Cup, the tournament is the biggest in the world with over 1,700 teams composed of 35,000 players from 140 countries participating.

MFC last won the Gothia Cup Boys 11 trophy in 1985.

Azkals face formidable task against Uzbekistan in World Cup qualifier at PH Stadium

THE Philippine Azkals face an experienced Uzbekistan side on September 8 in a game expected to test anew the mettle of the strongest national football team roster ever assembled.

“We need the support of Filipino football enthusiasts and even non-football fans to fill up the Philippine Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan, and applaud and inspire our players to give their best for the country,” said team manager Dan Palami of the highly-awaited match that serves as part of the Asian qualifiers of the 2018 Fifa World Cup.

Game time is at 8 p.m.

“There’s no better way to push our Azkals to play at the top of their game, score goals, and impose a high-pressure defense on the opponents than the thunderous applause, encouraging shouts of fans, and electric atmosphere in the stadium,” coach Thomas Dooley said about playing anew in the newest and largest stadium in the country today.

Inaugurated last year, the Philippine Sports Stadium has a maximum football seating capacity of 20,000.

Dooley noted Uzbekistan, which at 75th in the recent Fifa rankings is the highest rated team in its group, is a formidable opponent and has been burnishing its credentials as genuine title contenders in Asia.

The Uzbeks had a good showing in the tough Asian Cup with back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in 2004 and 2007, respectively, and a fourth place finish in Qatar in 2011.

Uzbekistan is determined even more to qualify for its first World Cup since 2018 host Russia is just next door of the country.

The Azkals, on the other hand, are ranked 124th, so far their highest place in the history of the Fifa rankings, well higher than Southeast Asian neighbors Thailand (140th) and Vietnam (143rd).

“The team is very motivated to end the qualifying round at the top of the group to be able to move a step closer to the World Cup. It’s an uphill goal but we will do our best to achieve it,” Palami said.

Finishing as one of the four best second placers in the qualifying round will likewise enable the team to make the cut to the next round of the World Cup.

Palami believes the Azkals have assembled the strongest national team roster ever with the addition of highly experienced Filipinos playing abroad and some returnees.

The good showing of the team in its first two outings indicated the impressive lineup is living up to its billing. The Azkals defeated Bahrain for the first time, 2-1, at home last June 11, then thrashed Yemen, 2-0, on the road last June 16.

A win against Uzbekistan will help advance the team to the next round in the World Cup qualifiers and also book an automatic slot in the next AFC Asian Cup.
