Philippine Women's National Team held final trials for ACQ

By Earl Averilla

TAGUIG -- The PFF Women’s Football coaching staff, led by Head Coach Buda Bautista, has just completed the final day of tryouts for locally-based hopefuls for the Women’s National Football Team in preparation for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers to be held in Tajikistan in April.

In the trials that started last February 22, Twenty-one booters coming from Ateneo, FEU, La Salle, and Outkast have attended the session in Mckinley Hill which comprised of sets of fitness and situational drills, and tactical huddles. The meeting was then capped by a twenty minute scrimmage to further confirm the current in-play capabilities of the potential national team representatives.

After the tryouts, Coach Buda shared in this interview that she expected more to attend the final tryout session, but in spite of the lower than expected attendance, she was optimistic about what she saw with the performance of the talents at hand.

“Maayos naman but we’re expecting na mas marami because it’s the last day of the tryouts and ang maganda nga is the UAAP (pertaining to the UAAP board responsible for football), I heard, they already support (the women’s national team program) na i-aadjust yung (UAAP Women’s football 2nd round calendar). So I was expecting more (athletes to attend). However in terms of the performance and executions of the players (who attended), it’s better compared to the last two tryouts. Mas nakuha na nila yung tactics na pinresent.”

Asked if, from the three sessions, there is already a certain list of players being considered to make up the core of the squad, Coach Buda replied, “Actually meron na initially, na hindi naman lumabas (pertaining to a no-show of players). So, from the three sessions, meron na kaming nakikitang around twenty-five players.”

Lastly, when asked about the next activities to follow regarding further scrimmages or friendlies, she added “Meron pang last session on March 7-9. These will be tryouts for overseas-based talents which will make a final list of thirty players. After that we’ll have pickup games that will simulate the schedule of Asian Cup.”

The 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers are scheduled from April 3-12 in Pamir Stadium in Dushanbe.

TOUGH TEST AHEAD

Ceres-Negros FC will restart their 2017 AFC Cup campaign at home against the S-League powerhouse Tampines Rovers on March 7. Though historically having the edge against the Singapore Club, longtime veterans of the club agree that it is a tough test ahead for the club.
“We expect a tough game, but it’s doable for us,” said Ceres Midfielder Manny Ott. “The team is highly concentrated after a decent performance in Hanoi against a strong opponent. We have some days now to prepare here. the team is feeling good, looking god, and were excited for the home game,” the longtime Azkal added.
The Bacolod squad featured in a thrilling 1-1 draw against V.League 1 champions Hanoi FC, scoring first against the home squad and defending the rest of the way to earn a vital point. The game saw the debut of new players of the squad who will also mark their first game in home soil.
Former Kaya FC player Junior Muñoz was one of the debutantes in Hanoi and the current Azkals defender is aware of the added pressure for the first home game. “I think the chemistry, the buildup is very good. If you can see the last game versus Hanoi we had a very good result there. It’s a home game so we expect the crowd’s gonna be there backing us up so we really really have to deliver some result,” said Munoz. The game will see the home debut of foreign players Fernando Rodriguez, Manuel “Super” Herrera, and Kota Kawase. Muñoz will be joined by fellow Filipino first timers in OJ Porteria, Jason de Jong, Jorrel Aristorenas, Joshua Grommen, Luke Woodland, and Ian Ramsey.

The Busmen have been drawn to what has been considered the “group of death” of the three ASEAN Groups in the AFC Cup. Ceres Coach Risto Vidakovic has considered the difficulty of the group given that the only the top team will have the certainty to qualify for the next round.
“I think for me the group is very hard. All four teams are very strong, Tampines is a former champion of Singapore, Hanoi FC is a champion, and Felda is big team in Malaysia. So for me, its the hardest group maybe of the three. It will not be easy to win at home. I hope that with the help (of the crowd) and the special motivation that the players have to play at home is very important. A full stadium is very important, maybe its the key to win the game,” said the Ceres mentor.
“The most important (objective) is to win, win the game, get three points, and have another game at home. We have to keep this team spirit we have and I think if we play as a team like we played in hanoi I think we have bigger chance to win the game,” the Ceres Coach added.
Last week, Ceres made the rounds in different areas to promote the game. It was highlighted by a mall tour and a visit to NOHS. The team also gave courtesy calls to Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Bacolod Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia.

Barotac Nuevo to bid construction of P50-M football stadium

Owing to its moniker as the "football capital" of the country, the local government unit of Barotac Nuevo is now gearing to submit to bidding the construction of its Php50-million football stadium

In an interview Tuesday, Mayor Braeden John Biron said that they already submitted the required documents to the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC). They hope to start with the construction anytime next month and complete it in 12 to 18 months.

Bulk of the fund will be sourced from the Php140-million savings of the town. Also, senator friends of his father, Iloilo Fourth District Representative Ferjenel Biron, donated Php5 million for the project, the mayor said.

He noted that the football stadium could accommodate around 5,000 spectators and when completed will serve as venue for international tournaments.

As the country’s football capital, Biron mentioned that their town is home for aspiring football players and through the stadium, athletes could further improve their skills.

Meanwhile, the mayor is also eyeing to construct other key infrastructures like market mall and improve their town plaza.

He said that he will also help the Department of Education (DepEd) by prioritizing the construction of Senior High School buildings in Barotac Nuevo.

Today, the town launched its “First Barotac Journey to Excellence,” a quiz bee conceptualized mainly to encourage pupils to strive hard in their studies.
