Philippine Azkals record highest FIFA ranking at 116

By Cedelf Tupas

Buoyed by its stunning upset of North Korea and a creditable showing against Uzbekistan in its last two games, the Philippines climbed to its highest-ever position of No. 116 in the latest FIFA rankings.
The Azkals made the biggest leap among Asian teams, moving up 19 places to their latest position, which team manager Dan Palami said only reflects the current form of the national side.
On top of registering the biggest reversal of the qualifying round with a 3-2 win over North Korea last week at Rizal Memorial Stadium, the Azkals also reclaimed the billing as Southeast Asia’s top ranked nation ahead of Thailand which is at No. 119.
The Thais advanced to the 12-team final round of World Cup Qualifying while the Azkals got the next best thing with a third round spot in Asian Cup Qualifying.
“I’m happy that our tireless efforts to improve the team has translated to a higher ranking,” said Palami who has bankrolled the side along with the Philippine Football Federation since 2010. “Our target was always to push Azkals to the Top 100 and get the team to play better and at a higher level against the stronger teams in Asia.”
Palami said that winning the Suzuki Cup and qualifying for the Asian Cup in 2019 will be the next targets of the Azkals.
“With our current ranking, we should aim high and believe that we can win the Suzuki Cup and qualify for the Asian Cup,” he added.

Ceres-La Salle dethrones 10-man Kaya in penalty shootout to set up UFL Cup final vs Global

By Karlo Sacamos
CERES-LA Salle needed a penalty shootout to dethrone Kaya FC, 8-7, on Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to arrange a final showdown with Global FC in the United Football League Cup.
Goalkeeper Michael Casas saved two spot kicks, including a retake, by Woody Ugarte, before Juani Guirado struck the marginal goal in the shootout as the Busmen survived a Kaya side that fought back from a goal down even after going a man down in the second half.
Ceres set up a date in the final with Global, which shut out Stallion FC, 2-0, in their Final Four matchup earlier.
“In these types of games, whoever wants it more, wins,” Ceres coach Ali Go said. “And in the shootout, it was just fifty-fifty.”
“Kudos to Kaya,” he added.
In a rematch of last year’s Cup final, Ceres took a 3-2 lead at the half as Carli de Murga, Patrick Reichelt, and Adrian Gallardo found the net.
But the Busmen squandered the cushion despite Kaya going a man down in the 61st minute when Jovin Bedic was sent off after picking up a second yellow card, with Louis Clark firing the equalizing goal 12 minutes after coming in the 58th.
The match went back and forth until the final buzzer of extra time as the match headed into penalty shootout.

Two-goal Global FC blanks Stallion FC to book return trip to UFL Cup final

GLOBAL FC blanked Stallion FC, 2-0, on Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to book the first ticket to the United Football League Cup final.
The former Cup winners banked on two goals in the first half to prevail over the Stallions and make their first appearance in the final since 2012.
Serbian defender Milan Nikolic unlocked the Stallions’ defense 29 minutes into the match before Cameroonian defender Serge Kaole doubled the lead two minutes before stoppage time.

UFL Cup semis: Kaya faces Ceres in finals rematch; Global to challenge Stallion

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Defending United Football League (UFL) Cup champion Kaya will battle league titlist Ceres-La Salle for a place in the UFL Cup finals on Wednesday (April 6), while former cup winners Global and Stallion square off in the other semifinal duel at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Although Global won the Cup in 2011, it hasn’t come close since losing to Stallion, 1-2, in the 2012 finals.
Both teams survived nervy moments before reaching the semifinal stage, with Stallion surviving Green Archers United, 3-2, last Saturday (April 2).
Global saw themselves reduced to 10 men after Omid Nazari was sent off in the 36th minute for a second bookable offense. The team relied on Arthur Kouassi to bail them out with a decisive goal after the break to seal a 1-0 win over JP Voltes.
“We lost momentum because of the long break and we have to work harder on the training ground for us to overcome Stallion which is a very good team,” said Global coach Leigh Manson.
The winners will contest the UFL Cup final on April 16. with the victor claiming at least a playoff berth for the 2017 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup.

2015 Finals rematch

AFC Cup campaigners Kaya and Ceres will meet again for the first time since their memorable Cup final clash last August.
Ceres fought back from two goals down to force extra time action in last year’s finals, but Kaya ultimately prevailed on penalties after extra time.
Kaya reached this year's semifinal round with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Loyola Meralco Sparks, while Ceres demolished a youthful Forza side, 7-0.
“Kaya is a tough opponent and they are doing really good in the AFC Cup,” said Ceres winger Jeffrey Christiaens.
“We have to focus and we just have to play our game. And I think individually, we have the best players. We just have to show it as a team that we are better than them.”
Global and Stallion will figure in the first semifinal clash of the day at 5:15 p.m., while last year's finalists Kaya and Ceres will contest the second semifinal match at 8:15 p.m. at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
