Green Archers draw with defending champs Global FC

MANILA, Philippines – Green Archers United FC held defending champs Global FC to a 1-1 draw during the opening day of the United Football League at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Saturday, February 7.

The Archers relied on the hands of sturdy goalkeeper Paolo Pascual to prevent Global from snatching an easy win during their first match of the season and jumpstart the latter’s title defense.

Global started on a high note after their foes conceded a penalty that was later converted by ace striker Mark Hartmann in the 10th minute to take the early lead for his squad.

As the opening half came to its final minutes, veteran Chieffy Caligdong answered with a goal of his own to even the score line at 1-1, beating former Green Archers teammate and now Global FC shot-stopper Patrick Deyto by a margin.

Come the second half, Global’s frontline went full throttle on their attacks, sending a flurry of shots on the Pascual-manned posts, but the young keeper of the Archers’ did not allow any attack to go through his gloves.

Kaya FC dominates Philippine Army FC

Meanwhile, Kaya FC started the new season with style after posting a dominating 4-0 victory over Philippine Army FC.

Kaya’s win was made possible through the feat of Azkals standout OJ Porteria, who scored a brace to power his club away from the bruising Army booters.

Louis Clark and Chris Greatwich also etched their names on the scorecard after finding the back of the net during the 76th and 79th minutes, respectively.

To round up the match result of this year’s league opening triple-header, Ceres-La Salle FC clinched a 2-1 win over Manila Jeepney FC during the first division one game of both clubs. – Rappler.com

SEA Games draw in April

SINGAPORE (6 Feb 2015) – The draw for men’s football at the 28th edition of the SEA Games this year will be held in April.

The tentative date for kick-off has been pegged for 29 May – a week before the official opening ceremony – with matches to be played at the Jalan Besar Stadium and also the Bishan Stadium.

Thailand are the defending champions.

Men’s football is the only event being competed in Singapore while women’s football and Futsal failed to get the green light.

Reinvigorated Global FC opens UFL title defense against Green Archers United

A REINVIGORATED Global FC seeks to move on from a recent heartbreak as it opens its United Football League title defense against Green Archers United on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. After playing five matches in 10 days in the recently concluded national club championship, capped by a 2-0 loss in the finale to Loyola Meralco, the defending UFL champion tries to start its league campaign on the right foot. “We have the squad almost recovered from the (killer schedule),” Global coach Leigh Manson told Spin.ph on the eve of the 8:15 p.m. encounter. “Now we settle for one game a week.” Global ruled last season in dominating fashion, finishing the six-month tournament with 62 points, 13 clear of runner-up Loyola Meralco. “It’s always difficult to defend a league title, but we are confident we can repeat last year’s success,” said Manson, who still have the materials to duplicate their feat with an Azkals-loaded squad led by Misagh Bahadoran, Mark Hartmann, Daisuke Sato, Amani Aguinaldo, and Patrick Deyto, along with Sudanese standout Izo El-Habib. Global, which is bolstered by a handful of offseason acquisitions including former Sparks defender Sam Bonney, takes on a Green Archers side led by former national skipper Chieffy Caligdong, Tating Pasilan, and Senegalese striker Robert Mendy. “Green Archers are a tough opening game,” Manson said. “It’s a good test for some of the new players coming in.” Reigning Division 2 champion Ceres-La Salle tries to make its mark in its maiden top-tier campaign as it faces fellow Division 1 rookie in Manila Jeepney in the opener at 2:15 p.m. Kaya FC, with new coach Adam Reekie of England, battles Philippine Army at 5:15 p.m. sandwiches the other two skirmishes and completing the tripleheader. Global announce signing of three foreign players

Manila: AFC Cup debutants Global FC have announced the signing of three foreign players as the reigning Philippines champions prepare for their Unified Football League title defence which starts this weekend.

The club have acquired the services of former Japan U-20 defender Masaki Yanagawa, Mexican midfielder Renato Gonzalez and U.S. Soccer Academy player Rolf Schlettwein as they build up for their domestic league opener against Green Archers on Saturday.

The new personnel were revealed after Global finished as runners-up in the 2014/15 Philippine Football Federation (PFF)-Smart National Club Championship courtesy of a 2-0 defeat to Loyola Meralco Sparks.

"This year, Global are deeply humbled to have the distinct opportunity as the first Filipino football club to qualify for the prestigious AFC Cup," Global FC founder Dan Palami said. "This is a testament to the hard work and dedication to excellence of our players, coaches, and staff.

"Every match is more than just a match, every goal more than just a goal. Victory extends far beyond the four corners of the pitch.

Surviving AFC Cup group stage will be a 'magnificent' achievement for Global, says coach

ADVANCING past the group stage is the goal of Global FC when it competes in the 2015 AFC Cup. Head coach Leigh Manson said making it to the next round will be ‘magnificent’ for the club, but acknowledges things are easier said than done. “We are aware that we are not just representing Global but also the nation. To be part of it, that’s the Philippines, at a club level, arriving on the world stage,” said Manson. “We have the responsibility to do our job to really show how good the players are. It will be a magnificent achievement to get out of the group. It would be great for us. “That’s our target. Get out of the group and then, we will take it game by game,” added the Scottish coach. Global FC is bracketed in Group G with Yangon United of Myanmar, Pahang FC of Malaysia, and South China of Hong Kong. The top two teams in each group advance into the Round-of-16. Asean nations ask AFC to move World Cup qualifiers to avoid schedule clash with SEA Games

THE ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) has requested the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to move the World Cup regional qualifiers from June to a later date to avoid a schedule clash with the Southeast Asian Games. Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano Araneta confirmed AFF’s move as several national squads including the Philippines will be affected. “The Asean Football Federation has written the AFC that our World Cup qualifiers in June for Southeast Asian nations should be postponed so that our teams can play in the SEA Games,” said Araneta. The SEA Games football competition, an Under-23 competition, will be from May 29 to June 15 in Singapore. Fifa has scheduled June 11 and 16 as dates for the second round of the World Cup qualifiers. Araneta said other countries are also affected by the schedule since they also have Under-23 players in the senior national team. “We have decided to write the AFC if they can postpone it to a later date to give way to the SEA Games. A lot of national team players will also be playing in the SEA Games,” Araneta added. After missing the 2013 edition, the Philippines is set to field a team for this year’s SEA Games after the Philippine Olympic Committee gave them the green light to submit a list of players for possible inclusion. “As of the moment, the POC has advised us that there is a big possibility that we will join the SEA Games,” Araneta said.
