GLOBAL FC hopes to further invigorate football in the country when it competes in the 2015 AFC Cup on February 25. Club president Dan Palami said Global is deeply honored and humbled to be the first Philippine team to represent the country in the prestigious Asian meet after winning the United Football League (UFL) competition. “We will be joined by the elite clubs in the entire continent. This is a testament to the hardwork, dedication, and the excellence of our coaches, players, and staff,” Palami said during the club’s launch at the Makati Shangrila Hotel on Tuesday night. That the Philippine Sports Stadium will be the site of the event makes Global’s participation even more memorable. The match between Global FC and South China of Hong Kong is the first major sports event to be hosted in the brand-new playing field, located just a few meters from the 50,000-seater Philippine Arena owned by the Iglesia Ni Cristo. “We’re privileged to have been given the right to use it by those who manage the stadium,” Palami said. Global FC is bracketed in Group G with Yangon United of Myanmar, Pahang FA of Malaysia, and South China of Hong Kong for the double-round robin group stage. Leading Global FC’s bid are national team members Patrick Deyto, Misagh Bahadoran, Matthew Hartmann, and Amani Aguinaldo. Palami enjoins the Filipino people to support club’s campaign in the AFC Cup. “As Global FC readies itself to represent the Philippines in the AFC Cup, once more we call on the Filipinos for their strong support,” said Palami, who is also team manager of the Philippine Azkals. “More than just the title, what is at stake is the opportunity for us top Filipinos to make a lasting mark in Asia and to finally prove that we can stood at par or even better with the best in Asian football.” Aside from the AFC Cup, Global also starts its campaign in the UFL against Green Archers FC on Saturday after finishing runner-up behind Loyola Meralco Sparks in the Smart-PFF National Club Championship.

Global FC ready to represent PH in AFC CUP
MANILA, Philipines- Defending United Football League champions Global FC will have a tough schedule come the opening of the football season as they are set to represent the country in the upcoming AFC Cup.
Head coach Leigh Manson told the media during the club’s gala night at the Makati Shangri-la hotel on Tuesday, February 3, the players are excited to play in the competition, as it will be a first for Philippine football.
“[The players are] very, very excited and very proud. I think we are aware that we are not just representing Global but representing the nation as well,“ he said.
Manson added that their club’s inclusion in the continental tournament is a testament to the rise of local football here in the country.
“I think that the Philippines at club level is arriving on the world stage because if you do well in a competition like that, everybody will notice you.”
Global FC is housed in Group G together with South China AA of Hong Kong, Pahang FA of Malaysia and Myanmar’s Yadanarbon FC.
Coach Manson admitted that they will be facing tough competition from their group, especially during their away games and stressed that they hope that the Filipino fans will come out to support them during their home games here in the country.
He also emphasized that their club’s target is to slip through the group stage and qualify for the next round.
“We’ve got the responsibility to do our job to really show how the players are and with a little bit of luck, we’ll be out of our group. And that will be our target, get out of the group and take it game by game.”
Meanwhile, Global FC president Dan Palami revealed that the first game of his club against South China AA in the Asian club football tilt on February 25 will be held here in the country in the brand new Philippine Stadium in Bulacan.
“We have been privileged to have been given the right to use it by those who manage to stadium.”
Aside from Global, two-time national club champs Ceres-La Salle FC will also be part of the AFC Cup.

2014-15 UFL Season Continues with Return of Highly Anticipated League
The highest level of Philippine club football returns on February 7 with the start of the UFL’s League competition. Regarded as the most difficult and grueling tournament to win in the UFL season, Filipino football fans have been eagerly anticipating how their favorite clubs will kickoff their campaigns after the three-month layoff following the FA League Cup.
To add even more stature to the six-month long League, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has officially confirmed that the tournament champions will effectively qualify for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup group stages – an honor earned by Global after clinching last season’s League title in emphatic fashion.
Although Global carry the prestige of being defending champions, and the first ever Filipino club to participate in the AFC Cup group stages, the Leigh Manson-coached side has had to endure some heartbreaks in their last two competitions. Most recently, they fell short against Loyola Meralco Sparks in the final of the PFF National Club Championship, compounding their woes after a disappointing defeat to Ceres-La Salle in the final of the FA League Cup last November. But with the Suzuki Cup and the PFF Nationals now out of the way, the titleholders have the opportunity to focus all their attentions on defending their crown.
Global begin their League campaign against Green Archers United in the final match on opening day. Newly promoted sides Ceres-La Salle and Manila Jeepney clash to start proceedings, with Kaya seeing action against Philippine Army shortly after, in what is an action-packed triple-header to kickoff the competition.
Much like the FA League Cup, which effectively got the ball rolling for the 2014-15 season, the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium will be the venue for most of the League’s matches, which take place primarily on Saturdays, Sundays, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
10 clubs make up the First Division of the League, with each side looking to amass as many points as possible in a double round format. Every win amounts to three points for the triumphant team, with every draw splitting a point between both sides. A champion can only be crowned once the League leader’s points total is mathematically beyond what any other club can reach in the division. With such a format, the competition crowns the club that best handles the rigors of an entire 6-month long campaign, rather than the team running hot during a shorter knockout competition. The team that finishes at the bottom of the First Division gets relegated to the Second Division, while the second tier’s champion moves up to the big leagues.

DELIVERING in the most important match of the tournament -- without its leading scorer -- surely deserves the distinction as the best club in the country. Loyola Meralco bucked the absence of Phil Younghusband to stun Global FC, 2-0, and claim the Philippine Football Federation-Smart Club National Championship crown on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. With Younghusband sidelined with an injury for most of the match, Loyola found an unlikely offensive spark from defender Eddie Mallari and eventual Golden Ball winner Matthew Hartmann to blank their fancied opponents. It was the Sparks’ first conquest of a major competition since ruling the United Football League Cup last year and first under coach Simon McMenemy. For a while, though, the Sparks seemed ready to fall short in the football season-opening tournament after Younghusband, who had scored in all of the Sparks' matches in the tournament, had to leave with an apparent hamstring injury just 14 minutes into the finale played before a sizeable crowd at Rizal. Global also looked poised to grab the title after dethroning defending champion Ceres-La Salle, 3-1, in a nerve-wracking semifinal showdown last Thursday. But Mallari, a recent acquisition tasked to shore up the Loyola defense, shone on offense with a strike off a connection between Roxy Dorlas and Hartmann three minutes after Younghusband came off. Hartmann, who had been a fantastic facilitator at the left wing the entire tournament, was on the receiving end this time with a conversion in the 57th minute on the way to winning the MVP and the Best Midfielder awards, deservingly. Loyola teammates Joaco Cañas and Tomas Trigo also bagged plums, taking Best Defender and Best Goalkeeper awards, respectively. Global striker Izo El-Habib gained a consolation as the Best Striker with seven goals for a squad that had scored the most goals in the competition with 23 before being shut out in the finale.
