6 join Pascual’s free goalkeeping clinic

By Cheska D. Geli

Monday, April 9, 2012

SIX keepers have joined Paolo Pascual’s three-day goalkeeping clinic at the Aboitiz Sportsfield on April 12, 16 and 17.

Pascual, who is in Cebu recuperating from an injury he sustained in the United Football League, decided to conduct a clinic in his spare time. His focus for now are the high school keepers because he believes they are at the stage of building their skills.

“Training with the high school players will be a good start but eventually, I plan to conduct clinics for the collegiate players and for the girls,” said Pascual, who was with the senior national team when they won the bronze medal in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup last month.

Those who have signed up are Tonito Rafols and Gab Villacin of Paref Springdale, Kyle Adalen of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, Kevin Belantes of Abellana National School, Joecel Vicente and Jaybee Malinao of the Mandaue Technical Institute.

They are still waiting for two more participants to confirm as the event is limited only to eight keepers. Pascual wants to make sure that he can closely interact and supervise them.

Though slots to the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. clinic are limited, Pascual, who was the starting keeper for the PH Under 21 team in the Hassanal Bolkiah Cup in Brunei, is inviting other youngsters to watch and observe the sessions.

This will also be the first time that Pascual will facilitate a goalkeeping clinic alone. He has done several clinics in the country but they were with his teammate Eduard Sacapaño of the Philippine Army.

Both still want to pursue the goalkeeping academy they initially planned together but they still can’t fit it in their busy schedule, as the second round of the UFL division 1 will start this week.

Pascual, Sacapano plan to put up goalkeeping school

By Cheska D. Geli

Monday, December 12, 2011

CEBUANO goalkeeper Paolo Pascual’s 11-month experience of being in the national team is a blessing the Cebuano football star is most thankful for.

As a way of giving back, the young keeper now plans to put up a Goal keeping Academy in Cebu with fellow goalie Eduard Sacapano.

"We’ve planned this for a long time and when I told Eduard about it, he was very excited about the plan," said Pascual.

The course will be open to all—grassroots and elite players—and will be launched tentatively after the AFC Challenge Cup.

After making it to the national team in time for his 20th birthday, Pascual since then made use of the opportunity to play against the best players and the tough countries.

Pascual said he wants to pass it to the younger ones.

Pascual is in Cebu for a five-day break and visited his former school Paref Springdale yesterday, where he conducted a clinic for 30 kids.

Beginners and some members of the Paref Springdale Fooball Club in the Boys 12 and Boys 14 got excited when Pascual arrived along with teammates Chieffy Caligdong and Ian Araneta.

Pascual shared his secret to making it in the professional football league—to train hard, practice more and follow your coach always.

"I've been there before. I used to complain when the trainings were hard, but now I realize that they are for our own good," said Pascual.

Pascual said he gained confidence in his last four games in the United Football League, where he impressed the crowd with impressive saves.

"It feels good to know my hard work is paying off. It was a good way to end the UFL," said Pascual.

Pascual makes 23-man team vs. Kuwait

IT’S a dream come true for former University of San Carlos goalleeper Paolo Pascual as he made the 23-man squad of the Philippine team that will face Kuwait in the second round of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers this month.

At 20, Pascual, is now part of the national team that keeps hoping to continue its recent string of successes as it takes on Asian powerhouse Kuwait.

“Dreams do come true. I never expected this to happen,” Pascual said.

Fifa rules require teams to have three goalkeepers in the lineup and Pascual will be the No. 3, next to Neil Etheridge and Edward Sacapaño.

Head coach Michael Wiess had noticed the improvement of the keeper, who played for USC in last year’s Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football finals, during the team’s trainings since becoming part of the Azkals early this year.

Pascual, who is also part of the 23-Under team that will play in the Southeast Asian Games, had been stepping up from the training sessions and with the injury of Chirstopher Camcam, he got the no. 3 slot.

“Sa akong tibuok career, playing for the country in the World Cup is the highest tournament I’ve been part of,” said Pascual, who was the starting keeper for the 19-Under team that saw action in the Asian Football Confederation U19 qualifiers.

With his achievement, the young keeper hopes he can inspire more Cebuanos to aim for more and to never give up on their dream.

“I am proud to represent Cebu and hopefully more Cebuanos will join the Azkals,” he said.

To prepare for Kuwait and acclimatize with the Middle East weather, the team will train in Bahrain and play two tuneup matches with the host’s Olympic team.

Kuwait is ranked 102nd in the world and No. 11 in Asia, while the Philippines is 159th in the world and No. 29 in Asia.

Cebuano Azkal signs deal with GS

By Mars G. Alison
Cebu Daily News

Having been away from Cebu since Jan. 17, goalkeeper Paolo Pascual, who made it to the Philippine men's national football team better known as the Azkals, is finally back home for a much needed one-week rest.

“There's no place like home...the feeling of peace and relaxation with my loved ones around,” said Pascual, who will be leaving back for Manila on the 19th for the Azkals training camp in Baguio.

The Philippine Azkals were given a one-week rest after winning their home game, 2-0, against Mongolia at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City for the AFC Challenge Cup 2012 pre-qualifying playoff last Feb. 9.

They will go back to training in Baguio City in preparation for their away game in Ulan Bator, Mongolia on March 15, wherein they hope to protect their 2-0 win and become one of the four teams who will qualify for the 16-team group phase.

It has been one dizzying ride for the former University of San Carlos (USC) goalkeeper, who left Cebu not really expecting to make the national team.

“I did not believe that I would get in. I just tried out to show that I was interested,” said Pascual, who was previously called twice to tryout for the Azkals but was never able to take the opportunity because of school obligations.

RELOCATED

Pascual has recently signed a one-season contract with the Global Smartmatic Football Club.

He was supposed to start playing for Global as soon as he got back to Manila. But since training camp in Baguio will already start, he will have to go with the Azkals first.

Having fulfilled his dream, though, comes with a high price as Pascual would have to relocate to Manila, which means being away from his parents.

He has already withdrawn his subjects at USC, where he is a junior Business Administration student. Aside from working on his football career, Pascual will also finish his studies in Manila.

Pascual said he has never trained as hard in his life until he became an Azkal. In Bacolod, they trained for two hours everyday.

“We do warm-ups, tacticals then skills training. It's more pressure, you are pushed to your limits, it's harder,” Pascual said.

He said that when he first started playing football, he never expected to play for the national team until he reached highschool wherein he had gathered several experience already playing the sport.

Pascual is very proud of representing Cebu in the team and has become an inspiration of many here who have aspired of becoming a professional football player, which he said, gives him a little room for errors.

Pascual said the experience has been great so far but according to German coach Hans Michael Weiss, the young Cebuano needs to beef up and build more muscles.

Pascual said that not being chosen as the no. 1 goalkeeper has also been a learning experience and he does not feel bad about it because he is now playing in a higher level.

Prior to becoming an Azkal, Pascual was chosen as the no.1 goalkeeper of the RP U19, which saw action in China in 2009.

Pascual makes pool, gets offer to play in UFL

THE rising football superstar of Cebu, Paolo Pascual, showed positive signs of making it to the pool of players who will compose either the senior team or the Under-23 squad of the Philippine National Football team.

The official announcement of the final list will be released today but Azkals team manager Dan Palami already confirmed that the remaining 13 hopefuls are part of the training pool.

“The pool of players are already considered as part of the team,” Palami said.

The Azkals coaching staff required the players to go through a series of practice games and trainings while waiting for the final list.

“Paolo is performing well. He is training with other goal keepers and he will train with the national team as well,” he added.

Only two goalkeepers will be sent to play for the upcoming match by the Philippine team against Mongolia and Neil Etheridge had already confirmed his presence.

They will announce today who the other keeper will be.

ABS-CBN will be the official broadcasting partner of the AFC Cup game in Bacolod this Feb. 9.

Offers

Meanwhile, while waiting for the final results of the tryout, Pascual received an offer to play with the Global FC.

Global FC is a team under the APC Global Incorporated, which actively participates in the premier football leagues in the Philippines such as the United Football League.

“He is young, trainable and has a good work ethic,” said Franco Lorenzo, team manager of Global FC. Lorenzo founded the team with Palami.

They first noticed Pascual when the Cebuano became part of their training pool, who
played for the Under-19 Asian Qualifiers in China in 2009 when he was still 17.

Passion

Lorenzo said he admired Pascual’s enthusiasm and passion for football and his
willingness made him throw the offer to the aspiring professional football player.

Pascual said he has not confirmed it yet. “I am is still weighing my options regarding the offer to play for Global FC. I still need to consult my parents,” said Pascual.

Lorenzo offered him a monthly allowance and a slot in the trainings for the Under-23 team of Global FC.

“I’m not forcing him because I know he still has obligations in Cebu and he still has to pursue his education but this is a good chance towards achieving his dream,” Lorenzo said.

The young player is overwhelmed by the response of other football teams to his performance.

“I feel so happy. It’s a good team with good players,” said Pascual.

Lorenzo asked Pascual to watch the championship game today of the Global FC against the Army Team so that he will get to know the players and observe them.

He already included Pascual in the list of players for the team’s next game.

“There are a lot of options. I could go to school here and and train at the same time or I could go back to Cebu and come back whenever they have trainings for the under 23 but my priority would be playing for the Azkals,” Pascual said.
