Philippine U14 Girls Football team wins against Singapore 3-1 in AFC and this girl from Payatas scored one of the goals

Unbeknownst to most, the Philippines U-14 girls squad is currently in Vietnam for the Asian Football Cup Regional Championships. Yesterday, they beat Singapore, 3-1.

It may be one of those garden-variety ho-hum matches except it’s not. Joining team Philippines is Regine, a 13-year-old girl from Payatas who was trained by Payatas FC, of the Fairplay for All Foundation (FFA). She actually scored one of the goals for Team Philippines.

According to Roy Moore, one of the two British founders of FFA, Regine started training with the National team in May. “They held tryouts in San Beda. She joined and was selected for training camp, which was comprised of 40 girls. She made the cut and joined the next training camp in Laguna, eventually making it to the 18-girl squad.”

They left Manila for the AFC games last Sunday, which is a first for many for Regine — it was her first time to ride a plane, her first time out of the country, and her first time with the National Team.

This is also the first time for Payatas FC — the football squad of FFA — to successfully send one of their players into the national team. “Another one of our girls was invited to join the team [last year], and the year before, but she was homesick so she didn’t,” narrates Moore, who along with compatriot Naomi Tomlinson, established FFA and Payatas FC in 2011.

Regine, who has been training with Payatas FC since 2011, is enjoying the experience, Roy says. “She says she’s learning a lot.” The lost their first game, against Vietnam 0-3 but they beat Singapore 3-1 last night.”

Today, Team Philippines is playing against Malaysia, which they should win to qualify for the semis.

Football and education are the two biggest concerns of FFA. Apart from being one of Payatas FC’s star players, Regine, Moore shares, is also an FFA scholar, who just graduated from elementary. “We’re sponsoring 45 kids in nearby public schools but we’re currently raising funds to build our own school, the Fairplay Center in Payatas where we can enroll kids.”

New Azkal find delivers in debut

MANILA, Philippines - It took an agonizing two weeks for Fil-British youngster Luke Woodland to make his debut for the Philippine Azkals but it was worth the wait.

One of the first to arrive for the start of training camp last June 1, the 19-year-old Woodland missed the opening 2-1 win over Bahrain due to eligibility issues and only got the Fifa clearance to suit up in the wee hours of Phl’s June 16 match against Yemen in Qatar.

He got his first start against the Yemenis, dishing out a solid performance and impressing with his distribution from the backline as the Azkals stormed to a 2-0 victory for a share of the Group H lead in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

“It was a brilliant experience,” said Woodland, the youngest member of the team.

Woodland felt at ease playing alongside Daisuke Sato and Jerry Lucena in a three-man formation at the back.

“That comes with being with the squad for two weeks now. We’ve built a good relationship. I know Sato; we knew what we’re like on the pitch and what we’re like off the pitch. You can read what each is gonna do when you got a good relationship like that. It makes it easier for the whole team,” he said.

A former mainstay of the English U-17 and U-18 sides, Woodland was reduced to spectator in the first game at home after failing to secure on time the clearance to switch nation from the Irish, Welsh and Scottish Football Associations, a requirement from the Fifa Players’ Status committee.

With one cap for the Azkals, Woodland looks forward to suiting up again when the Pinoy booters host Uzbekistan on Sept. 8.

“We’ll work hard again and look forward to the game in September,” he said.

Ceres-La Salle looks to tighten grip on top spot as it battles Loyola Meralco in resumption of UFL

SEVERAL Azkals return to club duty as the United Football League resumes after the international break with the start of the second round on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

After representing the country in two Fifa World Cup Qualifiers wins the past two weeks, Manny Ott, Patrick Reichelt, Martin Steuble, and Juani Guirado suit up for Ceres-La Salle, which seeks to tighten its grip on the lead in the standings, facing Loyola Meralco.

The marquee matchup kicks off at 7:45 p.m. after a showdown between bottom-half squads Green Archers United and Pachanga Diliman at 5:15 p.m.

National star Phil Younghusband is also fit to play for the Sparks, but will miss the encounter due to suspension, which the striker incurred after picking up two yellow cards in their 3-3 draw against Kaya at the end of the first round.

Ceres, enjoying the view from the top with 24 points, three ahead of Stallion, target a ninth victory in 10 games, while the Sparks aim to revive their bid as they are running fifth with 19 points, behind third-running Global FC and Kaya on goal difference.

The Bacolod-based Ceres outdueled the Sparks, in the first round, 5-2, behind a hat-trick by Spanish striker Adrian Gallardo.

The Sparks, though, welcome the addition of transfer-window recruits in British forward Brad Grayson, Spanish striker Napo Bustillo, Iranian goalkeeper Saba Garmaroudi, returning Filipino forward Jake Morallo, and young gun Alvin Sarmiento, as well as Azkals pool member Curt Dizon, who was part of the deal that sent Matthew Hartmann to Global.

“What’s really nice, going through the squad, we now have two very good players in every position, which is something we’ve been after for a while," Sparks coach Simon McMenemy said.

Trailing the Sparks are the sixth-running Archers, who finished the first round with a 3-2-4 win-draw-loss card for 11 points and are facing seventh-ranked Pachanga, which totes seven markers after only having two wins and a draw to show in nine matches.

Ceres-La Salle battles Loyola Meralco Saturday night in what promises to be an explosive clash to start the second round of the UFL League Competition at Rizal Memorial Stadiuam.
Three points clear of Stallion with 24 points, the Bacolod-based side are gunning for a ninth win of the season in the 7:45 p.m. clash with the Sparks.
The two teams battled to a thrilling battle in the first round with Ceres coming out on top, 5-2, thanks to an Adrian Gallardo hattrick.
A victory by the Sparks could open up the title race once more. The Sparks sit fifth with 19 points heading into the match.
With their title aspirations hanging in the balance, the Sparks will be looking to go all-out, although they will miss top scorer Phil Younghusband.
The striker will serve a suspension after picking up two yellow cards in the 3-3 draw with Kaya at the end of the first round. Anthony Putrus Schnell will also be sidelined for the Sparks due to accumulated yellow cards.
In contrast, the Busmen will be at full strength as the likes of Manny Ott, Patrick Reichelt, Juani Guirado and Martin Steuble are back in the squad, after the quartet played in the Azkals' first two games of World Cup Qualifying.
The Sparks beefed up their lineup during the transfer window last month, signing British striker Brad Grayson, Napo Bustillo, goalkeeper Saba Garmaroudi, returnee Jake Morallo, and young prospect Alvin Sarmiento. Loyola also picked up Curt Dizon as part of the deal that sent Matthew Hartmann to Global.
“What’s really nice, going through the squad, we now have two very good players in every position, which is something we’ve been after for awhile," said Sparks coach Simon McMenemy.
Green Archers looks to close in on the leaders when it collides with struggling Pachanga Diliman in the 5:15 p.m. kickoff.
The Archers have 11 points so far on three wins and a couple of draws. But Pachanga which has won just two matches this season can trim the gap between them and Archers to a single point with a victory.
Pachanga will be looking to carry the momentum of its strong first round finish against the Archers, who came out on top, 3-1, in their first round clash.

Azkals get big boost for FIFA elims

MANILA, Philippines - With two morale-boosting victories and a share of the lead, the Philippine Azkals will carry more confidence not to mention the needed momentum as they pursue their dreams in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

“We look forward to the next games with hope that we continue to build on what we have produced so far and build on this momentum,” said Azkals team manager Dan Palami.

The Azkals, fielding what many believed is the strongest team to date, upstaged higher-ranked Bahrain last June 11 at home, 2-1, then followed it up with an impressive 2-0 shutout of Yemen Tuesday night in Qatar, to join North Korea atop the Group H table after two match days.

“We take it one game at a time but as you get the result, first against Bahrain and then against Yemen, somehow, you’ll feel that you’re a step closer to what your objectives are and you would like to believe that somehow, what we dream is achievable. So we believe,” said Palami, whose team targeted to advance to the third round of the WC qualifiers.

The Pinoy booters’ WC campaign resumes on Sept. 8 with a home outing against Uzbekistan, the top-ranked team in the group that should be aching to bounce back from a 2-4 loss to North Korea over in Pyongyang last June 16.

“We’ll play against a very strong team Uzbekistan. They lost to North Korea in North Korea and with the pressure, they will certainly come out strong and play with everything they got against the Philippines. So we have to make sure we’re ready as a team and we really hope the fans will come in droves to support the Azkals,” said Palami.

The Azkals will get together again in the last week of August to prepare for the Uzbekistan game. Palami said the Philippine Football is arranging an international friendly on Sept. 3.

Azkals trip Yemenis in World Cup elims

DOHA – The Philippine Azkals fired warning shots to the rest of the field in Group H of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers as they roared to a 2-0 victory over Yemen Tuesday night before a predominantly Pinoy crowd at Qatar Sports Club Stadium.

Misagh Bahadoran and Iain Ramsay launched the missiles in the second half that leveled the Yemeni defense and cleared the way to their second straight win and a tie with North Korea atop the table with six points. The North Koreans beat Uzbekistan, 4-2, over in Pyongyang.

It was a fiery follow-up to the Azkals’ 2-1 upset of Bahrain last week back home in Bocaue, Bulacan, showing everyone that despite being regarded as the underdog by bettors, they are for real.

“When you win against Bahrain, you feel that the team is really playing well. But this is a confirmation of how far we can still go and how well we’re really playing,” said a happy team manager Dan Palami, whose team will next play Uzbekistan at home Sept. 8 and North Korea on the road a month later.

“We were quite worried because even in betting stations we were the underdogs (against Yemen) but then again, we’re used to that. Even against Bahrain, we were the underdogs. But what’s important is we play our game and we could see that when we do play our game that, we get good results,” he added.

Unleashing an excellent attacking football and a great work rate, the Azkals found the target via the cat-quick Bahadoran (52’) and fancied recruit Ramsay (74’) who each consummated on a fine delivery by Javier Patino to make the day of over 4,000 Filipinos among the 5,200 who braved the 36-degree heat to cheer them on.

“We talked about playing football – moving the ball around and having a nice combination, switching the balls, creating some chances up front. We had some patterns that we tried to work out in training and almost everything worked,” said coach Thomas Dooley.

Luke Woodland, the 19-year-old wunderkind who only got cleared to see action on the eve of the game, made a solid 90-minute debut, teaming up with Daisuke Sato and Jerry Lucena in the three-man backline that helped Neil Etheridge keep a clean sheet.

“Everybody’s outstanding and they worked so hard,” said Dooley who also deployed new face Kevin Ingreso, and Dennis Villanueva for the first time.

Yemen suffered its second consecutive loss at their “home.” The Yemenis dropped a 0-1 setback to North Korea last week here.

“We’re not on the level of Philippines in this game,” said Yemen coach Amin Al-Sunani, whose wards traveled 13 hours by boat and another five by plane out of their conflict-torn country. “Because of the bad situation in our country, we haven’t prepared well, we didn’t even have any friendly matches before our two matches. But I’m glad they did their best.”

New Hosts for AFF Tournaments following PSSI Suspension

SINGAPORE (16 June 2015) – Following the suspension on the FA of Indonesia (PSSI) by football’s world body FIFA recently, the AFF have decided to appoint new hosts for the various tournaments this year.

The decision was made following the AFF 15th Council Meeting that was held in Singapore yesterday.

The PSSI, who were suspended by FIFA for continued government interference, were initially supposed to host the AFF Under-16, the AFF U19 and also the AFF Futsal Championship this year.

But with the suspension, the FFC (Football Federation of Cambodia) have now come forward to host the AFF U16 slated for 27 July to 9 August, 2015 in Phnom Penh.

The AFF U19 will be played out in Vientiane, Laos while the AFF Futsal Championship has now been taken over by Thailand, who will also hosts the AFF Futsal Club Championship 2015.

While there were no re –draws done for the groupings of teams playing in the AFF U16 and also the AFF Futsal Championship, a re-draw was made for the AFF U19 as initially, teams were classified into three groups.

Now, there will only be two groups for the AFF U19.

PH Azkals blank Yemen for 2nd win in World Cup Qualifying

DOHA, Qatar–The Philippines delivered a glittering display of attacking football to subdue Yemen, 2-0, Tuesday night for its second win in 2018 World Cup Qualifying at Qatar Sports Club Stadium here.

Misagh Bahadoran and Iain Ramsay were on target in the second half as the Azkals finished the game with a flourish to gain a share of the lead in Group H with North Korea.

The Azkals also have six points from their first two matches, just like North Korea which beat Uzbekistan, 4-2, at home earlier in the day.

“Im very happy with the way we played,” said Azkals coach Thomas Dooley.

Still on a high after that epic 2-1 win over Bahrain last Thursday, the Azkals controlled the first half with little reward. Javier Patino and Bahadoran as well as Manny Ott couldn’t cash in on their chances, but the Azkals were also hardly troubled on the other end.

The game lured 5,200 fans most of them Filipinos based in this oil-rich country.

Showing newfound confidence after scoring his first international goal against Bahrain, Bahadoran dazzled on the right flank. He finally broke the deadlock eight minutes after the break, cutting inside from the right and swapping passes with Patino before turning and shooting brilliantly past Mohammed Ebrahim.

The Philippines should have been 2-0 up 15 minutes later but substitute Patrick Reichelt couldn’t find the target with the goal at his mercy.

After dodging a bullet when Waleed Mohd’s strike went wide, the Azkals doubled the lead through Ramsay who was set up wonderfully by a low cross from Patino.

Luke Woodland impressed in his Azkals debut playing at the middle of a three man backline.

Inspired Azkals seek win No 2 vs Yemenis

DOHA – On a high from their epic reversal over fancied Bahrain last week, the Philippine Azkals fight off overconfidence as they seek a followup victory against a lower-ranked rival from war-torn Yemen tonight in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers at Qatar Sports Club Stadium here.

“I think the biggest stumbling block will be ourselves. I mean, if we come into the game overconfident, we might find ourselves in trouble against a Yemeni team that might not be as tactically and technically as good as Bahrain but certainly doesn’t lack the heart to fight it out,” team manager Dan Palami said.

“But I’m quite confident if we play the same way we played against Bahrain then we stand a good chance of getting the three points,” he added.

All points lead to the Azkals enjoying the edge in the 7 p.m. encounter (12 a.m. Wednesday in Manila). 

The 137th ranked Pinoy booters, bannered by what many consider as the strongest team to date, ambushed No. 106 Bahrain, 2-1, at home. For its part, Yemen, 167th in the Fifa rankings, had little training due to armed conflict back home. The squad took a 13-hour boat ride out of Aden in difficult conditions en route to Djibouti, from where they took a five-hour flight to Qatar for their “home matches.” The Yemenis lost to North Korea, 0-1, Thursday.

“Yemen is 30 points behind us. But we were also 30 points behind Bahrain and we won against Bahrain. So I don’t see any reason why Yemen can’t do the same to us,” said coach Thomas Dooley.

“Yemen’s ranking is not necessarily an accurate reflection of the quality of the team. They have some technically very good players. We’re expecting another tough game and we’re preparing for it the way we prepared against Bahrain, as if we’re playing against Uzbekistan or everyone else. We can’t take any team lightly and there are no easy games,” defender Rob Gier said.

The Azkals will miss injured mainstays Stephan Schrock and Simone Rota while Luke Woodland is still doubtful pending clearance to switch nations for the Fifa.

“That’s a cause for other players to step up. Same thing that happened in the first game when Misagh came (for the hobbling Schrock), he performed. That should be the same tomorrow for those who will be fielded in,” said Palami.

Gier said it’s imperative to dish out a “professional performance” and sustain a high level of hard work.

“Those were the basis of our win against Bahrain. Everyone got their ground covered, they put their bodies on the line and made tackles,” he said.

The Azkals expect a good-sized crowd to rally them on, tapping the big Filipino community here.

“We know when we play in Qatar, we have great support. We always look forward to playing abroad where Filipinos are supporting us,” said Dooley.

After suspension, Azkals manager Palami happy to be back on bench

Azkals team manager Dan Palami was reduced to a fan when he watched the Philippine Azkals trounce Bahrain, 2-1 on Thursday.

Absent from the bench, Palami was serving the final match of his suspension after the fracas in the AFC Challenge Cup against Palestine last year. But regardless of where he was inside the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan, the godfather of Philippine football was all smiles after the match.

“For once, I was a fan and I’m a happy fan,” he said.

The 2-1 victory gave the country three points in Group H of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers, and Palami believes that the Azkals are still bound for more surprises.

“It’s a great start for the team. I was saying that somehow, we’re going to pull off surprises in this particular round. I’m happy that we pulled off one,” he said.

Palami also praised the crew for a decent showing against the favored Bahraini team. And despite the limited time to build chemistry, the team manager is positive that this is just the start of something big for the Azkals.

“I think the boys really played well. We have a deeper squad and hopefully, it will get us through to the next round. It’s too early to tell, but we’ll never know,” he said. “We’re happy with the players that we have, that we got depth to the squad. And as the qualifiers progress, I think we’ll see more cohesion to the team and this will translate to even better results.”

The Azkals are now in Qatar for their match against Yemen, and Palami is just bursting with confidence with his team’s chances in Doha.

“It’s always good to travel when you’re winning and we should win and get that six points coming back,” he said. “Now, I’m back on the bench and I’m ready to cheer the squad.” CFC

Yemenis no easy foe for Azkals

THE PHILIPPINES may have sent Bahrain reeling with a stunning 2-1 upset in their World Cup Qualifying opener Thursday night but Azkals manager Dan Palami is quick to dismiss any thought that the next game against Yemen will be easier for the squad.

Palami saw enough of Yemen’s World Cup Qualifying opener against North Korea to conclude that the Azkals are in for a dogfight when they meet in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.

Yemen lost to North Korea, 0-1, but the Yemenis—who are playing all their home games in Doha due to security concerns in their own country—had their moments, especially in the first half when they put their opponents on the backfoot.

“It’s certainly not going to be an easy game for us,” said Palami. “Just because we beat Bahrain, that doesn’t mean we will get past Yemen. They lose by narrow margins against stronger teams and can put us under pressure.”

The margin for error is slim for the Azkals in a tough Group H with the top team in the bracket advancing to the third round. The four best second placers in the eight qualifying groups will also advance to the next round.

But unlike other groups where there is a huge gap in quality among the teams, the Azkals landed in a very competitive bracket that also includes Uzbekistan.

“If we have a goal to be among the best second placers, we have to win these first two games,” said Azkals coach Thomas Dooley. “When you look at the groups, most of the time, the second placers are looking at the goal differential. But with the group that we have, it’s very very difficult.”

Dooley said the Azkals must take a do-or-die mentality in every game.

“We can only reach our goal if we’re getting points,” he said. “We really have to push hard to get it (the win against Yemen) and get everything that we want like a do-or-die game.”

Meanwhile, Luke Woodland remains doubtful for the Yemen clash as he awaits his clearance from the International Football Federation (Fifa). Woodland’s case is unique since his transfer of “sporting nationality” needed the approval of the English, Ireland, Wales and Scotland FAs as the 19-year-old played for England at the youth level.

The Fifa Players’ Status Committee will decide on Woodland, who was supposed to start ahead of Rob Gier in the win over Bahrain.

Ruled out of the clash against Yemen after sustaining a knee injury against Bahrain, Stephan Schrock left the Azkals camp in Doha and returned to Germany to recuperate.

Azkals update Saturday

Azkals are now in Doha preparing for FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Yemen on June 16


Stephan Schrock who is injured is also in Doha but will go back to Germany tomorrow for recovery. There wil be no replacement for him in the squad.

Luke Woodland who did not get a clearance by FIFA to play against has said that l "hopefully, I get to play."

Win vs Bahrain gives Azkals morale-boost

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Azkals didn’t take long to prove team manager Dan Palami’s pre-tournament pronouncements that they could spring some surprises in Group H of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

The Pinoy booters ambushed higher-ranked Bahrain, 2-1, in Thursday’s opening match at the Philippine Sports Stadium, boosting their stock and jacking up their confidence level in the home-and-away competition with the famous result.

“It’s a great start for the team. I was always saying that somehow we’ll pull off surprises in this particular round. I’m happy that we pulled off one tonight,” said Palami, who was reduced to spectator as he served his one-game suspension for a previous offense in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup finals in Maldives.

“For a while in the opening minutes, I was quite worried their (Bahrain’s) quality was too good for us to handle but the boys really played well, even the subs who came in played well. I think we have a deeper squad and they got us through tonight. Hopefully, it will get us through to the next round,” he added.

The victory sent the Phl to the top of the table in the Group H with three points in the company of North Korea, which scored a 1-0 win over Yemen over at the Qatar Sports Club Stadium in Qatar.

Phl XI will gun for its second straight win on Tuesday against the Yemenis also in Doha.

“We should win again next game and get that six points coming back,” said Palami.

“We’re in good position,” said Phil Younghusband, who wore the captain’s armband. “We’ve beaten the second strongest (team) in our group but Yemen will still be strong so this win (over Bahrain) should give us confidence going into that game.”

Misagh Bahadoran came off the bench for injured Stephan Schrock to open scoring off a pinpoint cross from Younghusband in the 50th minute then the comebacking Javier Patino fired it home off a rebound to provide the cushion.

“It was a team effort. We worked so hard. We had to work together both defensively and offensively. It’s like nobody had a bad day and the performance only went down when they got injured,” said coach Thomas Dooley.

Schrock hurt his knee and his status for the next game is doubtful while veteran Rob Gier, who filled in the starter’s role at the back following the ineligibility of Luke Woodland, had a sore knee and had to be taken out with minutes left before time.

Notes:  Misagh Bahadoran can probably call the Philippine Sports Stadium his “turf” as he scored two of the most memorable goals of his career there. Bahadoran netted international goal No. 1 as an Azkal mainstay Thursday night, just two months after contributing to Global FC’s historic 4-1 win over Yadanarbon in the AFC Cup group stage. “I feel this stadium was so blessed for me; now I scored two important goals  for the Phl football club and  for the Phl national team,” he said….New Azkal Luke Woodland said getting the big triumph somehow diminished the pain from being unable to see action due to eligibility issues. “I was so disappointed but we got the win. It was a good performance and it showed how strong our team is now. Looking forward to the game against Yemen. Hopefully, I get to play,” said Woodland, 19, hoping to finally secure clearance from the Irish, Scottish and Welsh football associations to switch countries in time for Tuesday’s away match.

Schrock doubtful for Azkals' next game after hurting knee in win over Bahrain

BOCAUE, Bulacan – The Philippine men’s football team is holding its breath over the knee injury suffered by Stephan Schrock early in the Azkals’ 2-1 win over Bahrain in the World Cup Qualifiers on Thursday night.

The returning star midfielder hurt his knee that forced him to come out 23 minutes into the match and replaced by Misagh Bahadoran, who didn’t disappoint by scoring the opening goal early in the second half.

Azkals coach Thomas Dooley fears Schrock hurt a ligament in his knee and said he will undergo an MRI on Friday morning to find out.

The German-American mentor has hinted Schrock could miss the Azkals next match against Yemen on Tuesday in Qatar.

“He could be out for at least two weeks,” Dooley said.
