Monday, SeUM Tagum FC earned a slot in the group stage after winning Cluster 4 against Hooligans FC, Montevista FC and Tandag FC. UM Tagum finished with seven points from two wins and a draw.
Real Marbel FC, on the other, earned their way into the group stage after finishing as the second best club in Clusters 1 to 4 or the Mindanao area.
UC Erco clinched a spot in the group stage after winning the qualifier for Cebu last month. Erco also won the Aboitiz Cup Men’s Open, the usual local qualifier for the Smart Cup, but Erco’s team was then made mostly of Nigerians, forcing the Cebu Football Association to hold another qualifier.
The PFF Smart Club Championship limits a team to only five foreign players.
UC Erco has revamped its roster with players from Erco FC, Bro Nationals and players and alumni from UC. Aside from that, former Azkals striker Ian Araneta is also suiting up for UC Erco.
“Ian is not yet with the team right now but maybe this week, he will join the team’s training and tune-up matches,” said Orale.
Group E will also be played here in Cebu with the group comprised of Leyte FA’s Laos FC, Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Football Association’s Magis FC and Naga City-Camarines Sur Football Association (NCCSFA) ABC Stars FC.
The winner of each group will advance to the national tournament and will be joined by three clubs from the United Football League.ptember 22, 2014
CEBU CITY representatives University of Cebu Erco-Bro Nationals are winding down their training and are eager to win a slot in the national leg of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Smart National Club Championship.
UC Erco will face Davao del Norte Football Association’s (DNFA) UM Tagum FC and Football Association of South Cotabato’s (Fasco) Real Marbel FC in Group D on Oct. 1 to 3 at the Cebu City Sports Center pitch.
“Our practices are still ongoing at Don Bosco and Abellana. We are concentrating on tactical practices since the schedule of games on Oct. 1, 2 and 3 are already final,” Erco FC’s Rodney Orale told Sun.Star Cebu. “As per coach Glen, the team is in good shape. We are still looking at the possibilities since we haven’t seen the teams, particularly the players. We are just doing full training since the schedule of the games, whether it be in the morning or afternoon, hasn’t been finalized yet.”
