October - Busy month for Philippines football

October will be a busy month for Philippines football.

- UFL Cup start on October 2 , and 40 group matches will be played in October and early November. Each team will play 4 cup matches.

- Loyola Meralco Sparks Fc will play Singapore Cup semifinals against Tampines Rovers on Oct 4 and 7 in Singapore.

- Azkals will be on training camp in Middle East from around October 7  to October 17. Playing Bahrain on Oct 12 and Kuwait on Oct 16.

- There is also a scheduled AFC Women`s U16 qualifiers in Manila with Philippines, Australia, Myanmar and Thailand competing.

Azkals training camp in Middle East

Azkals will be going on  a training camp to Middle East , playing the National teams of  Bahrain on 12. October and Kuwait on 16. October.

Not known when they are leaving for Bahrain , but will probably be in Bahrain from Monday, October 8

The team will mostly be composed of the Peace Cup team , maybe with exception of Jason Sabio who is injured . Younghusbands are playing for Loyola FC in Singapore on Oct 4 and 7, but still doubtful for these friendlies

Status of some of  the foreign based team players :

Rob Gier did not play club match this weekend , and could be injured.

Neil Etheridge is in the starting XI of Bristol Rovers , they play on Oct 13 and 20 , dont think he will play against Bahrain , maybe Kuwait ?

Roland Müller will probably get  a call-up to play for Azkals.

Stephan Schrock and Jerry Lucena is available , but unlikely to play in AFF Suzuki Cup group stage.

Paul Mulders is not playing for his Dutch club and will probably be playing for Azkals.

Ray Jonsson has finished his season in Iceland and his club was relegated. Expected to get a call-up.

Juani Guirado has announced he is ready for the Middle East training camp.

Angel Guirado is playing league match on Oct 13 for his club, not likely to go to Middle East or AFF Suzuki Cup.

Azkals dispatch Chinese Taipei to win Peace Cup

The Philippine national football team dispatched Chinese Taipei, 3-1, to sweep the Philippine Football Peace Cup on Saturday and win the country’s first international football tournament in 99 years.

Denis Wolf, who scored a hat trick in the Azkals’ 5-0 demolition of Macau last Thursday, opened the floodgates at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, scoring a goal at the 10th minute.

Skipper Chieffy Caligdong then took advantage of a poor clearance job by Chinese Taipei and buried a goal at the 35th minute.

OJ Porteria provided the Azkals a strong first half finish, hitting the net on a breakaway at the 43rd minute to give the Filipinos a commanding 3-nil edge at the break.

However, Azkals goalkeeper Eduard Sacapaño failed to keep a clean sheet throughout the tournament, giving up a goal to forward Chang Han at the 52nd minute that trimmed the Chinese Taipei deficit, 3-1.

Things got heated midway through the second half after Azkals midfielder Demitrius Omphroy seemed to tackle midfielder Lo Chi En of Chinese Taipei inside the penalty box. Chinese Taipei Football Association Vice President Leo Fu Tsai, who protested the call, was dismissed by the referees, but he refused to leave his team’s bench. The incident delayed the game for about 10 minutes.

Forward Lo Chi An then found a scoring chance off a free kick, only to roll harmlessly into the hands of Sacapaño.

The Azkals found a chance to increase their lead, but Patrick Reichelt’s attempt at the 79th minute went off the post.

Chinese Taipei had another opportunity to score after Jason De Jong tackled a Taiwanese player inside the box, giving captain Yang Chao Hsun a penalty kick in injury time.

But Sacapaño once again made another great save to cap a dominating performance for the Azkals.

The victory marks the first time the Philippines beat Chinese Taipei. The Filipinos had previously failed to defeat the Taiwanese in seven matches dating back to 1960.

The Azkals swept their three matches in the Peace Cup, winning against Guam, 1-0, last Tuesday and clobbering Macau, 5-0, last Thursday on their way to the championship.

The Peace Cup title is the Filipinos’ first international tournament win since the Philippines won a gold medal in the 1913 Far Eastern Games.

Azkals eye rare crown on home turf

 MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Azkals will have the opportunity to be crowned champions tonight when they face Chinese-Taipei in the finals of the Philippine Football Peace Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Unbeaten in their first two matches against Guam and Macau, the Azkals are tipped to win again and raise the trophy in the four-nation tournament also known as the Long Teng Cup.

By this time, Azkals supporters must have t-shirts proclaiming the Azkals as champions readied.

With six points in two matches, clean sheets for Azkals goalie Edward Sacapano, the Azkals only need a draw to win it all against the Chinese-Taipei squad that has four points on one win and a draw.

But the Azkals won’t settle for a draw.

“This may be just the Long Teng Cup but we will try to win it. It will be the first international title for the Azkals. It will also be my first,” said Denis Wolf.

Wolf scored a hat-trick in the Azkals’ 5-0 win over Macau the other night. He bled from the forehead after an early scramble but said after the victory he felt no pain.

“It happened so fast I don’t even remember. It doesn’t hurt,” said the 29-year-old Fil-German who will have a bulls-eye on his back when the final match is played.

A crowd bigger than the previous days is expected to troop to the historic stadium to root for the Azkals, runners-up to Hong Kong in last year’s Long Teng Cup in Taipei.

Azkals coach Michael Weiss sounded a little bit concerned about Azkals’ condition after giving their all in the first two matches.

“We will have to see if our fitness level is as I hope it would be,” said Weiss.

“But I think we still have something in the tank. The important thing is we’re in good position because a draw is enough for us,” he said.

While he’d seen marked improvement in the team since he took over the Azkals early last year, Weiss said he’d be happy to finally see a trophy in their hands.

He’s also counting on the support of the Filipino football fans.

“I hope the stadium will be full. I hope the people will come and we’ll have a full stadium and then get this trophy after a long, long while for the Philippines,” Weiss added.

The Chinese-Taipei coach said they will give it their all.

“We know this is a Peace Cup but our aim is to win the championship. It will be very difficult but we’ll try,” he said.

Global, Kaya to open 2012 UFL season

Power-packed matches featuring newly-crowned champion Global FC against Pasargad FC and another title favorite Kaya FC versus Green Archers United FC will usher in the 2012 season of the United Football League Cup, which begins on Tuesday at the University of Makati field in Makati City.



No less than UFL chair Santi Araneta, president Randy Roxas and new league commissioner Bonnie Ladrido along with Sports5 manager Vitto Lazatin opened the season with the traditional drawing of lots in a press conference at the Krocodile Grille in Greenbelt 3 in Makati City.


Pasargad FC, Navy, General Trias and Team Socceroo were drawn in Group A while Green Archers United, Diliman FC, Forza FC and Dolphins United FC were bracketed in Group B with Global.


In Group C, Loyola Meralco Sparks are joined by Nomads, Pachanga, Laos FC and Mendiola FC while Stallion Gilligans is packed in Group D alongside defending Cup titlist Air Force, Army, Sta. Lucia FC and Agilas FC.

"Compared to last year, there will be no 'Group of Death' this year because all the teams got the fair and equal distribution of teams," said Araneta.

Meanwhile, the league has gotten bigger with its television coveror AKTV on IBC 13 showing its games on prime time twice a week instead of its usual weekend schedule of Saturday games last year.


This means that UFL games will be shown live during Tuesdays and Thursdays starting this Tuesday with the 5 p.m. Global-Pasargad and 7 p.m. Kaya-Green Archers United matches at the UMak.


"We're excited to say that the UFL will now be shown twice a week instead of our usual Saturday schedule," said Lazatin, whose AKTV on IBC 13 has been showing not just football but others sports as well like the NCAA, the PBA, Olympics, boxing, billiards and PXC among others.

Roxas, for his part, also made assurances that the massively popular Younghusbands, Phil and James, who are not playing with the Azkals in the ongoing Peace Cup at the Rizal football pitch, will see action for the Loyola-Meralco Sparks.



"The Younghusbands will play," said Roxas.

While the 16 teams have undergone the drawing process, Global, Loyola, Kaya and Stallion were seeded in different groups outright and are expected to be the teams to watch out for in the Cup.


Global, for one, has acquired Fil-German Denis Santos Wolf, who scored a hat-trick in the Azkals' 5-0 demolition of Macau in the Peace Cup yesterday, in place of its top striker, Fil-Spanish Angel Guirado, who had 12 goals last season but opted to bolt out of Global for an Indian club.


The Edwin Cabalida-coached Global will also have Marvin and Marwin Angeles for a full-season to further beef up a team already loaded with stars in Misagh Bahadoran and Izzo El Habbib.

Meralco, for its part, will retain the dreaded Younghusbands to go with new additions in Chad Gould, PJ Fasdrigalan, and Koreans Byeong Yeol Jeong, Park Minho, Jo Won Jang and Hoon Goo Heo.


Kaya, meanwhile, is expected to get a big boost from the return of playing team captain and assistant coach Aly Borromeo from a devastating ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury he suffered last year.

Borromeo's presence should boost an already loaded Kaya roster of Ivory Coast's Eric Dagroh, Nate Burkey, Yannick Tuason, Eddie Mallari, Jason Sabio, Anton and Armand del Rosario, Jonah Romero, Lexton Moy and Kross Ubiam.

Azkals clobber Macau

Unleashing the full brunt of its attack, the Philippines scored a 5-0 romp over Macau last night to move on the verge of the Paulino Alcantara Peace Cup at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Making up for some poor finishing in the last few matches, Denis Wolf netted his first international hat trick to spearhead a bristling attacking display from the national side preparing for the AFF Suzuki Cup in November.

Patrick Reichelt, the hero in the 1-0 win against Guam Tuesday night, and Carli de Murga also got on the scoresheet in the second half as the Azkals displayed some clinical finishing that was missing for the most part in their first game.

Wolf struck from close range with a brilliant individual effort in the 22nd minute, before following up a saved effort from Chieffy Caligdong three minutes before halftime.

He completed the first hat trick by a Filipino international in two years since Ian Araneta struck for three against Timor Leste two years ago when the Fil-German confidently fired home from 10 yards off a cross from Demitrius Omphroy in the 64th minute.

The Azkals meet Chinese-Taipei tomorrow for the title, which could be the first international crown for the Philippines in almost a century.

Chinese-Taipei shut out Guam, 2-0, in the first match.

“Today, we got fortunate and the Philippines will be a tough game on Saturday (tomorrow),” said Taiwan coach Chian Mu-tsai through an interpreter.

With Filipino-American newcomer Matt Uy pulling the strings at midfield and Macau hardly putting pressure on the ball, the Azkals distributed the will and carved out chance after chance in a torrid opening half.

Araneta was guilty of missing a couple of chances early on, before he was substituted in the 36th minute by Jason Sabio. Wolf’s early goal calmed the Azkals nerves when he wriggled free inside the box, before firing to the top corner.

Wolf doubled the lead with a composed finish after a scramble inside the box. De Murga completed a fine team move in the 49th minute when he bundled home from close range after Marwin Angeles’ earlier shot was spilled by the Macau keeper Ho Man-fai, before Riechelt’s instinctive strike 20 minutes later rounded out the scoring for the Azkals.

Azkals need better form versus Macau

After a rather shaky win on opening day, the Philippine Azkals hope to post a more comfortable victory against the less fancied Macau side tonight, seeking to get the full three points that will move it closer to the title in the Philippine Football Peace Cup at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Firing blanks majority of the way, the Phil and James Younghusband-less Azkals leaned on Fil-German Patrick Reichelt’s header in the 81st minute to escape with a 1-0 triumph over Guam late Tuesday night and seize the lead in the four-nation meet.
Macau nearly pulled one off against higher-ranked Chinese-Taipei, if not for a late goal off a penalty kick by the Taiwanese Yang Chao Sun that forged a 2-2 standoff and a tie at second in the short round-robin tournament.
“We’re happy with the result,” Azkals coach Michael Weiss said after their conquest of Guam. “I’m not so happy with the game but it will become better. We’ll focus on our next opponent, Macau. We have to win that game. If we win that game, we’ll be in very, very good position to win the whole tournament.”
Leung Sui Wing, coach of the 200th ranked Macau, through an interpeter, said for them to beat the Azkals (150th), they need to work on their midfield.
“We have to improve our midfield, how we can be more compact,” Leung said through an interpreter.
Previously, the Azkals nipped Macau in the 2011 Long Teng Cup, 2-0, but Weiss wouldn’t want to fall into complacency in the 7:30 p.m. match, knowing how Macau played in the Peace Cup opener.
“They’re also a team on the rise, have some players from outside, played 2-2 against Chinese Taipei, a surprising result,” Weiss said. “We’ll never take this opponent lightly but with home advantage, hopefully some more people than tonight (Tuesday), we shall be able to get to the final day (with six points).


Parading eight new starters in the absence of the Younghusbands and the Europe-based pros who were there when the Azkals beat Guam, 3-0, in a friendly in Bacolod last June, the Azkals still dominated the Guamanians but just failed to cash in on their scoring opportunities.
“We saw a dominating Phl team in the first half, (although) without converting those plenty of chances. Next time we have to be cool, more composed in front of the goal and work on chances,” Weiss said, giving credit to Reichelt for “showing what he’s got against an opponent who gave us a hard time.”
“We were a little bit sloppy in the first 20 to 30 minutes of the second half. Guam was pressing us higher and we were very slow building up,” he added.
The German mentor said cohesion and jelling were still wanting, considering this is a different crew. Fil-Ams Demit Omphroy and Matthew Uy were among the new faces who made their full international debut against Guam.
“The spirit of the group helped us through this game (Guam). I expect Thursday and Saturday (against Chinese-Taipei) to be much, much better and also for the future. Most of these people (new additions) will help Phl stay strong in Asia and go up the ladder in world ranking,” he said.
Chinese-Taipei and Guam, whose players had stomach issues in Day 1, usher in action at 4 p.m.

Azkals boot for 2nd win versus Macau

Growing in confidence and looking more comfortable with its free-flowing style, the Philippines seeks a second victory in the Paulino Alcantara Peace Cup against Macau tonight at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Although they left several clear-cut chances begging, the Azkals played some attractive, dynamic football for long stretches in the 1-0 victory over Guam Monday night.

They hope to show more of the same—albeit with more clinical finishing in front of goal—in the 7:30 p.m. match against a Macau team that produced the shock result of the tournament so far when it held Chinese-Taipei to a 2-2 draw.

The Azkals have won their last two meetings with Macau in this tournament formerly known as the Long Teng Cup with their last victory coming last year when Chieffy Caligdong scored both goals in a 2-0 win in Kaohsiung. Ian Araneta also struck a hat-trick in the 5-0 thumping of Macau two years ago.

But coach Michael Weiss said past results hardly matter as Macau had shown some quality game in the match against Chinese-Taipei.

“It’s a team that is on the rise and we can’t take them lightly,” said the German. “We have to win the game and if we win that game, we will have a very good position to win the tournament.”

Nonetheless, Weiss expects plenty of improvement from the performance against Guam, which the Azkals peppered with 19 attempts, including 10 shots on target.

The Guam match marked several milestones for the Azkals with three players earning their first senior appearance in Demitrius Omphroy, who was impressive operating on the right flank, and midfielders Matthew Uy and Marvin Angeles. Midfielder Anto Gonzales also got his first start since the 2007 AFF Championship.

Queen City wants Smart Club moved

QUEEN City United requested the Philippine Football Federation to move the schedule of the Smart Club Regional Visayas Qualifiers a week later to give them time to prepare for the upcoming Azkals friendly game.

The regional qualifiers are set on Nov. 7 to 11 in Dumaguete City and QCU hopes that PFF will allow it a week after instead, as they are involved in the preparations for the Nov. 15 match at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The legwork belongs to the Cebu Football Association, who partnered with Queen City United and Cebu Amateur Football Club to carry out some of the preparations.

“We all have specific roles to play and we have to concentrate para dili mabalda sa preparations,” said QCU President Stanley Villacin.

Villacin pointed out that if the tournament dates push through, they will have divided attention and run the risk of failing on both situations.

“This is the first hosting of Cebu of an international match and we want it to be successful so that the PFF will consider us as a venue for future matches,” said Villacin.

Cebu is bound to play against teams from Bacolod, Dumaguete, Leyte and Iloilo for the regional qualifiers.

Despite the busy schedule, QCU is still consistent with their trainings and practices, which are still held every day.

“I hope PFF will give a favorable decision because it is still a PFF activity although hosted by CFA,” he added.

Azkals 1, Guam 0: We’ll take the W

"The attendance was truly pitiful. Not even a fifty peso bleacher ticket was enough to lure Pinoy Football fans to the Rizal Memorial on a Tuesday night. The grandstand was about half full and only a smallish piece of the center bleachers was populated. It almost made me want to cry. Has Azkals mania waned that much? Apparently so. How bad was the attendance? The Azkals customary post-match lap of honor was replaced by a stroll straight to the center bleachers. No need to do a lap, since there wasn't anyone there to greet behind the goals.

My hope is that Thursday will be better, and that on Saturday, with the title on the line, Rizal Memorial will be rocking. I'll continue to tweet out exhortations for people to watch the games live.

I can't emphasize it enough: the team needs our support now. Please watch live on Thursday and Saturday."

Reichelt bails out Azkals to win Peace Cup opener

The Philippine national men’s football team dominated Guam, but needed a lucky break for its lone goal in a 1-0 victory in their opening match in the Philippine Football Peace Cup Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.


Patrick Reichelt was at the right place at the right time, scoring a header at the 81st minute after tentative defending by the Guamanian goalkeeper.

“I took a chance, and it was a goal. I was lucky,” Reichelt said after the match.


The Filipino-German’s goal, his first in official international play, bailed out the Azkals, who controlled the match but could not convert on opportunity after opportunity.


The Azkals had 19 attempts at goal (10 on target), compared to just nine for Guam (four on target).

Late sub Marvin Angeles had the chance to widen the gap late in the game, but he missed an easy attempt near the goal.

In a friendly match last June, the Azkals toyed with Guam, scoring all three of their goals in the first half en route to the victory. But it was a different story Tuesday night, as the Filipinos to score against an improved Guam team.

Despite the poor finishing, younger Azkals such as Reichelt, Denis Wolf, Carli De Murga, and OJ Porteria displayed impressive skill on the pitch. But the team notably missed the offensive sock of Phil Younghusband, the team’s best striker, who was left off the team for the tournament along with his brother James.

With the victory, the Azkals now stand atop the Peace Cup standings with three points, while Chinese Taipei and Macau, which played a 2-2 draw in the first match, have one point apiece. The team with the best record at the end of the competition wins the title.

The Azkals will face Macau on Thursday and Chinese Taipei on Saturday.

Azkals: We’re still strong sans Phil and James Younghusband

INQUIRER.net   MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Football Peace Cup, formerly known as the Long Teng Cup, kicks off Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.


The Philippine Azkals, who finished second to Hong Kong in last year’s tournament, will battle it out against Guam, Macau and Chinese Taipei.


The Azkals though, won’t have the services of Phil and James Younghusband.


Despite the exclusion of the two football stars, Chieffy Caligdong, who took home the Golden Boot award last year, remained upbeat of the Azkals chances.

“We have new faces in the team. Siguro mas malakas kami ngayon (as compared to) last Long Teng Cup,” said Caligdong, who led the tournament with four goals, in a press conference. “Every team wants a good result.”


“We’ll probably rotate [players] a little bit. I’m willing to give the players their chances,” said head coach Hans Michael Weiss.


The Philippines opens its campaign against Guam before battling Macau Thursday and clashing with Chinese Taipei on Saturday.

Younghusband brothers on exclusion: We don’t know the reason why

INQUIRER.net   MANILA, Philippines—Brothers Phil and James Younghusband couldn’t help but feel disappointed over their exclusion from the men’s football squad’s lineup for the Philippine Football Peace Cup, which kicks off Tuesday.



The Fil-British brothers are also clueless as to why they were left out of the team, as they said in a television interview.



“We were very disappointed to learn just a couple of days before. I mean, we don’t know the reason why,” said the striker Phil, who leads the Azkals in international goals scored.


The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has addressed the issue in a press conference stating that the football body “can no longer meet some of the demands of the brothers.”


“Without getting into too much detail, they are economic even half of which the amount the PFF cannot handle and non-economic are with regards to commitment to schedules.”


Azkals head coach Hans Michael Weiss has said his relationship with the Younghusbands ‘is good’ and that he was able to ‘communicate with them well.’


But the German coach added: “I tried to understand their extracurricular activities again and again and again until it becomes unacceptable to other players.”


“Sometimes, things have to be done for the sake of the team because team is greater than individual,” said Weiss.

The PFF made clear it was not a sanction, adding that it was still uncertain whether Phil and James’ exclusion is temporary or permanent.

Management cites commitments issues for Azkals rosters sans Younghusband brothers

Without naming names, management of the Philippine national football team released a statement on Sunday about the makeup of the national team for the Philippine Football Peace Cup, which would feature the Azkals without stars Phil and James Younghusband.

The management said it “asked the players to give their unequivocal commitment to participate fully in the preparations,” but not all members of the Azkals were able to do this.

“Having greatly benefited from Suzuki Cup 2010, we expect our players to work harder than ever this year,” the PFF said. “Unfortunately, not everyone in the team could assure us of this; a few have already signified their unavailability for some crucial activities leading up to the tournament.”

The PFF added that it understands the reasons behind the absence of some players from national team matches.

“While this is admittedly a setback in our plans, we understand that family obligations and club/work commitments sometimes take precedence,” the PFF said. “The coaching staff will instead make adjustments in the game plan and in the roster of players, starting from the Philippine Football Peace Cup.”

The PFF, however, didn’t address the Younghusband brothers specifically. But they are the most notable players missing from the lineup for the four-nation tournament.

Earlier, InterAKTV reported that Phil and James were left out of the Azkals lineup for Peace Cup, with coach Hans Michael Weiss informing them of the news through a text message.

“James sorry for not being able to talk to you personally… so I have to inform you per text that Phil and you are not included in the list for the Peace Cup… anything else after remains to be seen… take care and all the best! MW” wrote Weiss in a text message to James.

The Azkals will face Guam on Tuesday, Macau on Thursday and Chinese Taipei on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium for the Peace Cup. The matches are part of their buildup for the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup, where they aim to duplicate their semifinal finish in the same competition two years ago.
