“We thank Football Association of Singapore for inviting the Philippines to compete in the Merlion Cup 2019,” said PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “This tournament is a perfect gauge for the team in their preparation for the 30th Southeast Asian Games.”

Another tour of duty for Schrock

By:  -

Asian Cup goal scorer Stephan Schrock has put on hold his plans to retire from international football as he joins the Philippine squad in its China training camp that includes a friendly against the Chinese national team on Friday in Guangzhou.
Schrock, who skipped the training camp in Bangkok in March, was among the key returnees from the Asian Cup squad in January as coach Scott Cooper aims to put together the strongest lineup for the World Cup Qualifiers starting September.

Still the main creative player for his club, Ceres-Negros, Schrock will link up with former club teammate Patrick Reichelt, who has been in fantastic form with eight goals so far for Melaka United in the first division in Malaysia.
Schrock had hinted of retirement after scoring against Kyrgyzstan in a 3-1 loss during the group stage of the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates. But the midfield dynamo has decided to continue playing for the Azkals as he takes on the leadership mantle of the squad that won’t have longtime players Phil and James Younghusband. The Younghusband brothers have been without a club since last December and were not selected by Cooper.

CERES-NEGROS CRUISES PAST GLOBAL CEBU

Ceres-Negros cruised to a 8-0 victory over Global Cebu last June 1 at the PFF Training Center in Carmona Cavite. Bienvenido Maranon topscored while Mike Ott, Mahir Karic, and Jeffrey Christaens added some more for the Busmen.
The action started as early as the 2nd minute when Super Herrera headed in the ball which by headed by JP Canieso off the line. After a couple more chances, Ceres-Negros found the back of the net when Maranon redirected an Omid Nazari header to make it 1-0.
Curt Dizon almost doubled the advantage minutes later but keeper Nelson Gasic was there for the save. After not getting a penalty call, Maranon got his second after he smashed the ball off Gasic ‘s foot for the games second goal.
The Busmen had good chances from Maranon, Dizon, and Ott but Gasic was on point with every save to keep his squad in the game. Maranon completed his hat trick early in the 33rd minute when he tapped the ball in after spectacular work by Stephan Schrock on the break.
Global had their first attempt off a free kick but Muller tapped the ball over the bar to save his team from blushes. The Negros squad earned a fourth from the spot care of Mike Ott who converted a penalty from a handball in injury time.
The home squad had another chance after the break from Chris Lawless who broke away from the defense but couldn’t enough to bother Muller. Twin chances from Ott and Maranon near the hour mark weren’t on target to pad on to the tally.
Matthew Custodio freed himself enough to unleash a shot on the break but Muller was again there to deny. The Global rookie had another chance in the 67th but his strike goes over the bar.
Chances from Schrock, Christaens, and Steuble were off their mark but Karic was prolific from point blank to make it 5-0. It didn’t take long before the Busmen found the back of the net as Maranon was allowed enough space to drill in his fourth after two minutes.
Karic scored his brace in the 84th after the substitutes debut goal minutes earlier. Christaens joined the scoring fray with a prolific strike from outside the box to make it 8-0.
Global had their last heave with Jerry Barbaso but the wingback could smash the ball past the rushing Muller late in the match. The match finished with Ceres-Negros running away with the comfortable victory.
Club football will take a break as the FIFA International break starting on June 2. The Philippine champs will resume their domestic campaign on June 28 but will battle Hanoi FC in the ASEAN semifinals of the AFC Cup on June 18 and 25.
