CERES-La Salle seeks to finish off a trailing Global FC side as they battle for all the marbles in the Philippine Football Federation-Smart National Club Championship on Saturday at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
After gaining a head start with a 2-1 victory in the first leg last Thursday, the defending champions from Bacolod try to avoid a letup in the second leg as they hope for the same result against the United Football League powerhouse.
A scoreless draw is all Ceres needed in the 3 p.m. encounter to hoist its second successive trophy and solidify its status as the country’s top football club.
But Global, with a handful of national team members in its fold, is still firmly in the running to dethrone the defending champions as the Dan Palami-owned side only needs a 1-0 win to snatch away the title and cap the year on a bright note.
Such a scenario would knot the aggregate score at 2-2, forcing the away-goals rule to take effect that makes Angel Guirado’s “away” goal in the first leg equivalent to two goals.
Global was adjudged the “away” team in the first leg.
Apart from the Azkals in the roster, Rufo Sanchez, who has been banned for one year in the UFL, banners Global as he tries to take advantage of his chance to play outside the league.
On the other hand, moonlighting Global booter Joshua Beloya and Jayson Panhay, the goal scorers for Ceres in the first leg, tries to reprise their roles for coach Ali Go.
