THE Philippine men’s football team capped off another banner year with yet another achievement as it recorded a new all-time high in terms of world ranking.
The Azkals continued their rise to international relevance when they notched six places up to 127th in the latest International Football Federation (Fifa) rankings released Thursday.
The feat came after the Filipino booters retained the Philippine Peace Cup title two months ago and clinched a return trip to the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup main tournament by topping the qualifiers earlier this year.
The significant jump in the rankings by the Azkals, who hardly saw action in November and December, can be attributed to the tournament results of the past few months and those of the past four years.
The Azkals remain the No. 1 team in Southeast Asia, followed by Myanmar, which is three spots behind after moving 10 places up to 130th, and Vietnam, which also made a huge 14-place leap to 144th in the world.
