Cebu eyes 2nd win in PFF Suzuki Cup U23

CEBU guns for its second win in the Visayas leg of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Suzuki Cup U23 as it faces Negros Oriental Football Association (NORFA) at the latter’s home turf at the Silliman Ball Field in Dumaguete City today.

Cebu demolished Leyte, 4-1, last weekend for its first win in the tournament at the Leyte Sports Complex.

NORFA, on the other hand, is still eyeing its first win after bowing to the Negros Occidental Football Association (NOFA), 1-4, also last weekend.

Cebu is represented by the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) and beefed up by seven players from other schools.

The team is manned by Joel Cahilog, John Ejara, Jestoni Pialago, Russel Layumas, Rikko de Guzman, Ronan de Guzman, Junifer Ebero, Agapito Baclaan, Junjun Pintuan, Jeff Lester Agravante, Rafael Broce, Henry Perales, John Lester Sembra and James Rodney Parel, all of USJ-R; Jason Calungsad of University of Cebu; Aljohn Armamento and LJ Reyes of University of Southern Philippines Foundation and Neil Anthony Rosauro, Edmar Madrilejo, Anthony Tabuelog and Ben Lorenzo Magbanua from Don Bosco Boys Home.

NORFA is manned by players from Dumaguete.

This tournament is played in a home-and-away format with the top three teams advancing to the national finals and will play against the top three teams from Luzon and Mindanao.

Cebu will have its first home match on March 31 against the Iloilo Football Association at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue.

Other home matches for Cebu will be on April 14 against NOFA, April 28 against Leyte and May 19 versus NORFA. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON

  1. 2-2 ang score. Nice game. both teams had only 10 men in the second half. NORFA getting the equalizer in 91st min with a penalty. NORFA dominated the possession and goal attempts in the last 25 min minutes of the game, with at least 5 very dangerous goal attempts all on target. Cebu's goalkeeper should be credited for saving Cebu, with very nice saves. Both teams were equally matched. The question now, who will get the 2nd and 3rd spot between NORFA, Cebu and Iloilo, with NOFA the firm 1st placer.

  2. Great game, great crowd. Hope ABS-CBN could show some highlights of the game. ABS-CBN Dumaguete was their to cover the game. It would be interesting to see how Cebu vs Iloilo and NORFA vs Iloilo pans out. It will surely be a tight contest to take 2nd and 3rd spot. Sad development: Cebu will miss one of their key players on their next assignment(Iloilo). Interesting note, NORFA seems to get better every game. This current team is very young but doesn't lack heart. Cebu was held to an almost defensive position in their half for that last 20-25 minutes and was awarded an equalizer late in the game. On that time span, Cebu had just one good attack, a chip hitting the bar. Could have been a win by NORFA if not for the brilliant saves of the Cebu keeper and not so good finishing of two crucial opportunities. If there was more time, NORFA had the upper hand to snatch the win, coz momentum was clearly on their side while nerves getting better of Cebu. Congrats NORFA(Dumaguete)!
