MANILA, Philippines - If she had her way, former First Lady Amelita "Ming" Ramos wants the Philippine Azkals to change their name after 2 of their players were accused of sexually harassing her daughter, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) match commissioner Cristy Ramos.
Ramos said she fully supports her daughter's decision to file a sexual harassment complaint against Azkals Lexton Moy and Angel Guirado. She urged her daughter to remain firm and fight for the rights of women.
The former First Lady said the behavior of the 2 national players reflects badly on the name of the team. The name Azkals is an abbreviation of "asong kalye" or stray dog.
She said the Azkals should consider changing their name to bring back their dignity as the country's official football team.
Former president Fidel Ramos, meanwhile, said his daughter has been a sports official for a long time and obviously knows what she is doing.
He said the team should learn to respect sports officials and should start winning games.
The former First Couple was interviewed by reporters at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1. The two left for Taiwan for a 5-day business trip with a 60-member delegation.

ReplyDeleteFUCK THAT!!!!!! no name change. look for another team and change their name
DeleteYou're lame and cheap then!! azkals should have never been the nickname of the NATIONAL TEAM to begin with!
Deletea true fan of the national team would never allow the name to be changed. you want the name to change just for the perks of it. for those who have been truly supporting the team ever since know what the name stands for and the values it represents...
DeleteLOL!!!! Fuck off!! Don't try to lecture people on what being a "true fan" is you dumb ass!!!
DeleteWho ever said that a change in name should be done "just for the perks of it"?!?!? Clearly you're a moron trying to make excuses to have such an idiotic nickname for a NATIONAL TEAM be retained.
"What the name stands for and values it represents".
What it stands for?!?!? Values it represents?!?!?!?!? What values?!?! LOL!! Right....... because a street dong has so many of these "values" you're claiming. We don't need a a stupid ass nickname just to remind ourselves of the history of the team! You really are a complete numpty to say the least!! ffs!!
i love azkals drama
ReplyDeleteIts not the Team Name..( AZKALS ) anyway...AZKALS bakit yon lang ba ang dahilan?...mistakes can be done to anybody....look at the mirror....tapos na may mag aayos na sa issue... dagdagan pa.... kaya lalong lumaki ang issue....u think whats the best ? TOM & Jerry ? or MHEYYAWWW...team..GO AZKALS..ignore the other things...enjoy the game and bring the honor of our country...OFW Middle East
ReplyDeleteK A L O K O H A N
ReplyDeleteSure, business trip..*hehe*
Ok na yung mag-appear sa media about sa harrasement issue.. Now they are making themselves look like media hoggers with this change name thing.. Moniker/Nickname lang ang 'Azkals', which IMO sounds really cool.. Kung gusto nila '3 stars and a sun' para mas patriotic..
Though this was just spot on:
"He(FVR) said the team should learn to respect sports officials and should start winning games."
One thing I agree with the former President FVR is that the Philippines needs to win. If they win the championship, there will be so much euphoria at home, that it will drown out all these calls for sanctions and they will return home conquering heroes. They will have so much positive publicity that they will gain the upper hand in this public relations battle. I think they will still need to make a public apology to Commissioner Ramos, but I think she will be more amenable to accepting this if they come home as victors rather than like stray dogs with their tails between their legs. Sorry about the pun.
ReplyDeleteThe team should use this controversy to develop an "us against the world mentality" and use this as an incentive to win. Sometimes it is adversity that breeds success. Let us hope that this is one of those times.
I don't know about you guys, but I love the name Azkals.
ReplyDeleteAnd Ex-first lady ramos is saying that the name needs to be changed just because of a scandal. So ano, pag meron na namang scandal magpapalit na naman nang pangalan? Ano naman yon? Parang walang purpose. Atsaka bakit sya be and nag bi bigay pa ng ganitong suggestion? Wala na ang pamilya nila sa palasyo, aside from the sexual harassment complaint, they should just keep quite and wait for the verdict. What's the use of being loud and so open? Save their dignity is my advice.
101 % We agree with you., they put the Issue of ( sex harassment ) then they will point out again the " AZKALS name to be change " What really they wanted to be ? media exposure ? enough is enough ... utang na loob...OFW - MIDDLE EAST

DeleteHow about Razkals? :-)
ReplyDeleteonly two players are involved in this issue, wg ng idamay pa ung iba , stating the idea of M R to replace the name of the team , give respect naman sa iba M R.
ReplyDeleteang kaso po., pinalaki ang issue.,kaliwat kanan ang interview....tapos na raw nag submit na ng complaint document to AFC ( proud to be ) naka usap na ang mga staff those concerned people of AZKALS tapos tuloy pa rin it looks like pinag pyestahan ang issue.. what about sa mga BATANG HAMOG? may nag tyaga bang pag uusapan ng matagal? hindi o wala? its totally harassment...may mga interisado ba ? wala... WHY? alam mo na ang mga kasagutan... GO... AZKALS.... bring the Honor to our country...
DeleteYeah! Please change Azkal, it's a jejemon term after all. Let us stop bannering our Football National Team as Jejemons.
ReplyDeleteAfter all, publicity has been made already for the "Azkals", but this time make it known to everyone that the Azkals is our National Team by calling the team "Philippine Football National Team" this time.

ReplyDeleteto begin with, the nickname AZKALS is a Filipino slang for a street/stray dog, "asong kalye". it's a fancy moniker since then but i have read another etymology saying it came from Spanish "Calle Azul" or Blue Street, loosely dubbed "Azul Calle", transliteration of Blue Street too, describing once the Phil national football team of 1991 in blue adidas jersey lining up a street in Manila. i just can't find the source so it can be a hearsay. everyone, help google to verify. :)
