Palami eyes four-nation Cup for Azkals

DAN Palami is planning a series of friendly matches for the Philippine national team for its buildup for the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup.

“One of the many key elements for the team is to play as many international friendly matches as possible,” Palami told Sun.Star Cebu.

The country is looking at hosting the Formations Cup this November where they have invited Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

It will be the senior team who will be seeing action as the under-23 squad will be playing in the Southeast Asian Games during that month.

Aside from that, Palami has already gotten in touch with other international football associations, with the help of the Philippine Football Federation, for some home and away friendly matches.

“It will still depend upon the schedule of the international calendar and the availability of players,” said Palami.

Fifa sets aside certain dates in a year for international matches and clubs are required to release their players to play for their national teams.

Palami said there are some countries who have confirmed interest to play with the national squad, like those from the Middle East—where the team had their training camp—and from Southeast Asia.

Aside from scheduling friendlies, Palami said he will leave for a scouting trip in Europe to look for potential members of the senior and U23 squad, while the rest of the players are now back with their clubs.

  1. If all can be pushed through - excellent! Can't wait to see the action again. Our team needs as many games as possible to get international experience.....finally something seems to go on and not like in the past to lay the NT always for a year or longer to rest...

  2. I dont understand Palami. First he want to play on FIFA match dates , then he plan to invite Singapore and Thailand for friendlies in November when they both play Third Round World Cup qualifiers on 11 and 15. November .

  3. That's what I've been saying for a while now. Palami keeps blabbering on in the media and says all sorts of shit. And then he ends up contradicting himself. The guy needs to fucking shut up for once!

  5. Palami works in mysterious ways. Not so long ago he was saying playing against stronger opposition improves a team. That's debatable, but why the hell would Singapore and Thailand - with home and away World Cup qualifiers coming up in November want to waste part of that month in Manila?

Then there's the poor young under-23's. The SEA games are also in November and Weiss is supposed to be in charge of preparations for and participation in those games.

Could it be possible that the PFF has decided to milk the Azkals financially for all they're worth and leave youth development on the back burner for another generation?

  6. Just take it easy....inviting Singapore and Thailand does not mean that they will say yes and come to Manila.....so i wouldn't get headaches about it as I doubt they will come due to the world cup qualifier schedule....maybe they send U-23 or Junior team only....who knows....I wouldn't think that much about it till something is fix. There have always been big ideas or vision and in the end nothing came out....so relax and see

  7. Even their U23 would beat the azkals if the azkals dont field their strongest team, and they probably wont because of club commitments of the azkal stars.

And youth development will always be left behind on the back burner for another generation. People have probably realized this, but philippine football right now is only about the azkals, not about local leagues, players and talents. The focus is azkals and the players abroad. If this trend continues, then there will be no local players left in the starting eleven, let alone the bench. Theyre even bringing in players based abroad just to have them sit on the bench. What a waste.
