TWO collegiate standouts from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and a Fil-Belgian aspirant are being considered for the national under-23 men’s football team, which is in the thick of preparations for the coming Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.
National coach Hans Michael Weiss is keeping an eye on the likes of La Salle goalkeeper Patrick Deyto, University of the Philippines striker Jinggoy Valmayor and Fil-Belgian defender Jacques Van Bossche.
The three have shown interest in being a part of the national squad and are among the many 30 aspirants picked to join the practices with the Philippine Azkals, while they were preparing for the 2014 World Cup qualifying games against Kuwait over the past two months.
Weiss believes that with the new pool of talents, the Philippines will have chance to become a contender again in the World Cup in four years’ time.
“With this effort, we have a chance, and a good group to be developed, with a good average age and new players coming in,” said Weiss.
The 6’1” Deyto could take the place of Fil-British goalie Neil Etheridge, who is unsure of his commitment, and may not see action in the SEA Games. Peter Atencio

mendoza of san carlos and munoz of barotac is much better than deyto or even camcam..so why not take them..
ReplyDeleteBecause they haven't shown what they can do on a notable stage/tournament. At the same time, that's just your opinion that their better than this or that player. Doesn't mean they really are.
ReplyDeleteMendoza was rated best goalkeeper in PFF U23 Championship.
ReplyDeleteAhh Mendoza, that short and chubby goalkeeper of NOFA, he is ok at that level pero kung international level na ang pag-uusapan,talagang kapos. I've seen that guy play and he just ok not good and nor great. The only reason why he has few goals allowed is because the back four of NOFA was strong.
ReplyDeletenotable tournament? r u talking about uaap? last time i check hndi naka porma ung uaap(ncr1/ncr2) against iloilo and negros sa u23 tournament..most of the individual award went to the players from the provincial team...maraming talent na hindi pa na tap sa vismin region...pero i have 2 agree na magaling talaga sa valmayor( i think the guy is from san carlos before moving to the big city)
ReplyDeletenotable stage and tournament where munoz played...ufl cup with stallion fc..allowed only 1 goal the entire stint...he is also the goalkeeper of west negros university(champion of unigames 2008)..played against azkals at barotac nuevo allowed only 1 goal...
ReplyDeletemendoza best goal keeper of pff u-23..
how about deyto?uaap 3rd placer...allowed how many goals?..how about camcam?...anong notable tournaments napaglaruan nila?
I'm not a fan of Camcam but he is practically the first choice GK for Kaya and has a couple of caps for the Philippine U16's!
ReplyDeletecamcam doesn't do well even on scrimmages! hello. have seen him train in alabang, baguio, rizal. he's slow and couldn't even jump. is he the 1st choice keeper of Kaya? i doubt it. did camcam tried out or he's dad is just a friend of palami's? mendoza and munoz didn't show up because tryouts are done here in manila during off season of the UFL, when these two are in the province. well, mendoza is based in bacolod. only munoz is based here in manila.
