West Negros University reasserted its supremacy in men’s football yesterday, blanking St. Benilde College, 2-0, to take home the championship in the 14th National University Games at the Central Philippine University pitch in Iloilo City.
Though having a hard time making the necessary adjustment to turn back the aggressive attacks from the CSB side, the Wesnecans, mentored by former national coach and RP campaigner Norman Fegidero, found their rhythm in the second half and connected the first goal in 50th minute courtesy of Joven Bedic. Seven minutes after, Ruffy Llorente sent a free kick directly to the goal’s mouth to seal the win.
In women’s football, University of Sto. Tomas claimed the crown by beating De La Salle University, while University of the Philippines settled for second runner-up honors by prevailing over University of San Carlos, 5-0, at the Sta. Barbara town football ground.
The women’s football title capped UST’s crowning glory after plucking the men and women’s volleyball championship.
