FORMER National University Games champions West Negros University and University of St. La Salle posted opening round wins Saturday.
This is as men's football hostilities kicked off in the ongoing 14th Unigames in Iloilo City at the Central Philippine University and Iloilo Sports Complex fields.
The defending Nopsscea champion West Negros University squad mentored by former national team mainstay Norman Fegidero Jr. demolished unheralded Dipolog Memorial Christian Center Foundation, 7-0, while in a clash of former Unigames titlists' University of St. La Salle, mentored by former RP team coach Freddie Lazarito, waylaid Silliman University, 6-0.
Scoring for the Wesnecans were Carlo Tacusalme with 2 goals while former RP team campaigner Joeven Bedic, Mark Ferrer and Vicne Braga tallied 1 goal apiece.
Also posting wins were University of the Philippines, which blanked Ateneo University, 3-0, while De La Salle University nipped Iloilo's John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, 1-0.
Both WNU and USLS are missing the services of former national team campaigners who have already played out their allowable number of playing years in this annual multi-sports gathering founded in 1996 by former USLS president Brother Rolando R. Dizon, FSC.
They are Wesnecans Robert Cañedo and Joel Ballo-allo and La Sallians Arnie Pasinabo and Floriano Pacilan Jr.
Late Sunday, the Wesnecans posted an 8-0 victory over former titlist Silliman University, with Mark Ferrer and Joeven Bedic scoring 3 goals each and Gino Palomo adding another 2.
USLS also posted a 2-1 win over host CPU.
WNU and USLS are scheduled to clash Monday to determine who advances to the next round from their bracket.
