Biantan: No Minda team for PF League?

By Jack Biantan

IT IS a shame that Mindanao has the most number of recognized Football Associations (FA) under the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and yet the second biggest island in the Philippine Archipelago is not represented in the Philippine Football League which is scheduled to open its first season in March. What are the 17-club members doing? The Yansons of Bacolod were reportedly interested in putting up a club for Davao City but that plan has so far fizzled out. Cagayan de Oro? No chance. There is even no proper football stadium here. Cebu is quite busy accommodating Dan Palami’s Global Football Club (FC) and according to the reports of SunStar Cebu Sports Editor Mike Limpag recently, the ball has started rolling in the Queen City of the South. They are renaming Global FC to Global Queen City FC and are now starting to sell club shares as high as P100,000 for a voting member and P5,000 as a non-voting member. There are five FA in Visayas: Negros Occidental FA, Negros Oriental FA, Cebu FA, Iloilo FA, and Leyte FA and yet there are already two sure clubs joining and one under negotiation. Iloilo FA is still trying to convince Stallions FC to make Iloilo as its home province after the Ernie Nierras-owned club has decided to make Biñan Laguna as its home province. If Iloilo gets to be represented in the Philippines Football League then that is an impressive 50 per cent representation of Visayas FA’s. It is now very clear that most of the 17 Mindanao FA’s created during the presidency of the late Jose Martinez were for political agenda of then the late president. Now that a club is needed to represent Mindanao, where are these FA’s. It is understandable that millions of pesos are needed to put up a football club. Clubs in the United Football League have bled so much. Now most of them have shifted to the Philippine Football League (PFL) hoping for return of investment and maybe latter some profits. There should be someone, somewhere here in Mindanao who is willing to put up professional football club and join the PFL. The Philippines is a basketball country but there is a market for football especially in Mindanao where talents are abound. The United States of America is not even a football country. There are a number of sports that compete against the beautiful game in the American sports market. But football (soccer) thrives and they have a strong professional league, the Major League Soccer. The creation of the PFL would help the sport grow in the country but how could it grow in Mindanao when no team can represent the Land of Promise in the league.

  1. Why not a united afp team?
    Warriors (insert mindanao city) fc?

  2. It is very obvious that the definition of an FA (Football Association) has been loosely used in the Philippines. Anybody with 3 friends with money and a bunch of young kids wanting to play soccer becomes an FA. No stadium, no training program, basically nothing, just the ambition to enter the newly hyped Filipino football scene. Even in the UFL, with all those rich dudes, only 2 or 3 teams are worth the full recognition of an FA. Even JP Voltes FC, a good talented soccer club does not have the infrastructure to be an FA according to FIFA standards.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the only football stadium with a large capacity inmindanao is in Zamboanga, which is not really a football hotbed. None of the ufl teams has enough money to build a new stadium from scratch and even if, ut's an extremely risky endeavor, because that money might never get back. It's more healthy to play it safe now and not invest too much for the first season of the league and have all of the teams play in football hotbeds with good stadiums.

    2. The Zamboanga Grandstand- Joaquin F. Enriquez sports complex is under going renovation since mid of last year and is expected o be finish by April this year. worth around 187Mphp Which to me a bit too much considering they're only going to replace the track,Football field with Artificial Grass from Germany. The main bleacher can accommodate around 15-18k. there are other two smaller bleacher both with 5k capacity. Plus, if Zamboanga would form a team from scratch they can ask Mega Sardines to sponsor the team.

    9. Isnt Sunstar is a Visayas,/mindanao publication?

The PFF is lacking in the PR department. Also mainstream media seems not to care much. Much more can be learned from facebook fan pages, twitter of some sports journalist than all of the official sources combined. Not much can be found in the PFF website and is outdated. No info regarding the reorganized regional football asdocition either.

  4. The article is for only press release purposes by PFF-PFL.Either good or bad publicity pa din,it could help promote the upcoming pro league and football in general. Social media much relible option than mainstream media from Imperial Mani
a to promote the pro league.

    1. If you hate the label Imperial Manila, palitan mo ng Imperial Cebu or Imperial Davao city.FYI historical & proven na hindi na maalis ang political jargon sa sports.Yung mga complain nyo kung raw puro well off kids & fil-foreigners ang pinapaboran ng PFF na mapasama sa training ng azkals at laging sa manila venue ng practice & matches ay good example of politics according to your specualations
